Intro to Airforce in Hearts of Iron IV | Beginners Guides

Confused about how the air forces work in Hearts of Iron IV? I used to be too cobba. But don’t worry, I’m here to guide you into being the best Air Commander in the whole of Hoi4*
So sit back, grab a beverage of choice and soak up all this knowledge until your brain explodes**.
*And by that I mean the whole of your single player game… against the AI.. You’ll be better than the computer alright?
**Your brain will not explode, and if it does, for legal reasons it’s not my fault, this was a joke… a bad joke, but still a joke.
The Beginner's Guide series is for new players to learn the core concepts of Hearts of Iron IV. All these tutorials are assuming players are using the vanilla (un-modded) version of the game, and have not yet purchased any DLCs.

Okay so the new update By Blood Alone changes a few things for the way air works in the base game which I'll list here! - There are now set air wing sizes, 100 for a land based wing, 10 for a carrier wing - There's a quick deploy button next to the "add air wing" button, you can set up to three different types of aircraft you can easily deploy a wing for - Transport planes seem to use a lot more command power when put on a supply mission Most things are the same unless you buy the DLC, I might have missed something but they seem like the main ones!

I don't get why there are set air wing sizes?? I used to use tiny squadrons of 10-20 and that made micromanagement so easy

Thank you very much for your HOI4 guides. Your specific instructions on many key aspects of how to get everything organized to let the AI work for us is very helpful. I haven't found another source half as good. Your mastery of the HOI4 GUI is impressive. One challenge: Carrier Air Wings. I am playing without the DLCs and your instructions emptied all the planes off my carriers, but were insufficient to reassign planes back (to the carriers). If I go to the carrier airwing, I can't access the planes. And when I select the planes, I can't access the Carrier airwing. Maybe this is a micro issue... but getting one of your uniquely detailed guides on managing Carrier Air Wings would be amazing. From what I've read from other players, challenges with Carrier Air Wings is a relatively common problem. Thanks again for helping me better enjoy this insanely detailed game... 🙏🙏✌

Assigning an Airwing to an army is extremely useful, it’s much less min-maxing and ensure that wherever your army goes it can have both CAS and Fighters to clear the sky, as long as they have enough range and airfield capacity…

For fighter plane template in 1940 in bba 1st 1940 fighter frame For armment Double air Cannon This is might be a bit weird to say but 2x light machine guns Now for all the other stuff 1940 single engine Drop tanks and no strat materials Comes around 32.50 production cost and if you go concentrated industry 1939 industry along with 1939 machine tool you can get a nice 4 airCraft per day for 25 mil factory

After you assign air forces to the army/fleet(all of these air forces already have their missions like (8:01))(7:58), Do all of these air forces just automatically do their mission within their radius(yellow circle)? And are their radius(yellow circle) are measures by army/fleet location that is assign to the army/fleet right?. And If their supplies/their hp are low(assuming I assign them to normal operation(25%)),they will go to the nearest airport to re-supply right?

They'll automatically assign themselves to the region where most of your armies force is concentrated The radius is going to determine the efficiency of operation over a region, the more of their radius covers a region, the higher the mission efficiency And there's not really supply or HP for air wings, it's more the strength of the wing in terms of plane count you need to worry about, but if you're producing planes they'll auto reinforce up to the airwing size limit

Thanks for all your helpful videos! I’m about to finish my first game as Italy, and I’m still confused by managing my planes. After putting everything in air groups, how am I supposed to find my fighters for example? The air groups are color coded which doesn’t help me find the right planes for the job

Great question! That just means that you're at war with some air wings that aren't active. In and of itself not the worst thing, but if you click the button it'll take you to all those inactive wings and you can put them to use 😊

So do my planes attack strat bombers if they fly through or attack areas outside of the sphere of influence but have to go through the fighter areas ?

Great question! Short answer is no. They'll only attack planes in the air zone they're doing a mission in, similar to how AA works

Air Force should really have their own Commander type like an aerial Ace or aerial Commander

Bombers that attack infrastructure, can they target enemy airports, wiping out the planes? Like Germany done in the beggining of Great Patriotic War (I'm Russian) with soviet planes sitting in Smolensk?

They can damage the airports making them unusable, but unfortunately it doesn't destroy the planes. But if there was a mechanic to have special forces like the SAS in North Africa behind enemy lines taking them out that would be sick hahaa

I’m clicking the button to increase the reinforcement limit of air wings and nothings happening. It makes the click noise and then…. Nothing. I can’t increase the capacity of my airwngs. What do I do?

They have changed the game to make airwings set to a max limit of 100!

Can't believe I missed that! Sorry haha there's a little aircraft icon with a plus in the top right of the airport menu, you can click that to deploy and planes in stockpile as an air wing
