Absolutely lovely tutorial! One potential improvement would be, in my case atleast, larger / zoomed in terminal. Its hard to see otherwise while watching on a phone. Keep on going, there is a lack of nixos videos!

and also idk if its just me, the volume is also kinda low tbh

Flakes look like they are really powerful. Thanks for the interesting tutorial.

Can't wait for the future videos on the use of flakes - the suspense is killing me! I kid. superb job as always! :)

Note for future folks watching: 21.05 and up (dropping tomorrow!) will have the flake command built in, so you don't need to do anything with the "experimental" cmdline stuff.
@TheStuzenz3 жыл бұрын
Good to know - thanks! I am on 21.05, but added experimental in. I think it did give me some error if I didn't though. I ended up adding it to the configuration.nix I will comment it out and check that it still works. Thanks for letting me/us know.

@@TheStuzenz did it work for you? (it didn't for me)
@erectlocution Жыл бұрын
For _other_ future folks watching, I'm using Nix 2.13.2 and `nix flake` is still "experimental". No bigs, just wanted to make sure newer folks like me didn't get confused.

IIRC the version 3.0 is reverted back to 2.4. So the 2.4 version is actually newer than the 3.0.

Great video, can you make any more of these tutorials?

Hey man running through your entire series of NIx videos and I'm about to be on your last, please make more videos! they are so informative and helpful as someone who runs Linux and is an IT Professional learning programming! Please make content again! Hope you see this!

So I am still having trouble wrapping my head around the difference between Home Manager and Flakes. And if you can, please do an updated guide like the ones you did on flakes. If, of course, you want to..... no pressure....

Yeah I plan on doing more videos. I just started a new job which has delayed me a little bit. :)

I am new to flake. From the video, can I say that any thing in configuration.nix can be converted to flake.nix, then no need configuration.nix any longer?
@bellawagner4410 Жыл бұрын
I think you need always a configuration.nix, but you can put the most things in to other things. But I’m not sure, maybe you can configure everything in a flake
@junweidong2448 Жыл бұрын
@@bellawagner4410 If Flake could specify configuration to more details(like customized config to a certain app), then I would still prefer flake.

great content, but the sound capture setup needs improvement! I can hear your keystrokes louder than your voice

Can someone fill me in on what happened when the nix command went to 3.0 and then got reverted back to 2.4 (or whatever) and has slowly climbed back to (checks console) 2.8.1? I'm new to the Nix ecosystem and I feel like I have 10 years of drama and design changes to catch up on lol

Love the breakdown and your cadence. however for the love of jesus I feel like you've shown me what my keyboard sounds like to other people, please consider some linear switches with some lube, I will personally subsidise it.

Good tutorial, but the voice is too quiet and the keyboard noise is way too loud. Also the terminal is too small I hope you can improve your setup for future videos!
@kexec.2 жыл бұрын
yeah even in max volume it's not easy to hear his voice. sizing up terminal font is also needed.
