I really like how he talks about the pallet at 5:45ish. It was the opposite of patronizing whatever word that would be. Normally people would say just right click for it, but assuming that some of the viewers are absolute beginners while only making it optional to use or not use at our own discretion was just nice to hear.

hey do you know if when using a 3D modeling software, like he says the different materials assigned to different faces of an object, would it work with blender too? Like if I had one object in the 3D modeling software, but it had 3 materials - like a window, a glass material, glossy diffuse material, and maybe a texture material to add the appearance of smudges on the surface, would each element be recognized in blender? Like if I dragged a material onto the pane glass, would it render it that material? But not the frame of the window, which is the diffuse material. Like if you dragged copper onto it like he did that ball, would it only change that element?

I'm really impressed on how the material editor is a LOT faster than the today's version of unreal engine, you get instant updates on the preview, nowadays we have to wait for hundreds of shaders to compile for each simple connection made, even when changing the color without connecting to anything the compile shaders popup, and they stack up if you connect and disconnect, fix this!

If you guys go all open-source, you may be able to amass a physically-based 'materials' and 'objects' library (like houses, bicycles, animals plant's etc) , created by users, that you can just impart into your games/sims (whatever). UE could also be used for an online multiplayer 'world', which peopel can build up themselves.

As I tried to mention earlier, UE should 'try' to created a 'physically based' material system. This includes 'Colour' 'Roughness' 'Reflection' 'Metalic-ness' etc. Colour itself should be a physically-based phenomena. For EU'5' I suggest going back to the drawing board.

I have a question is that I can change the background in material preview background. But how to make the preview in 360 degrees lighting? In my condition, half of the preview ball is in the dark.
@itsallinallston5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for this, but I was trying to assign a metallic material to a mesh, and it shows up as either black, or very dark, even thought it looks fine in the editor. Is there some sort of lighting issue here? Disabling the metallic parameter enables the material to work just fine (with a roughness of 0.) Reflective, but not quite the metallic sheen that I wanted. Thanks again.
@ViRiXDreamcore10 жыл бұрын
Just created a new project and tried this again... it's a bit faster, but I still have to wait about 10 to half a minute for the material to update. Here it happens instantly. Is it because of my CPU (Q6600 2.4 ghz quad core no Hyper Threading) or my gfx card (GTX 560 Ti... that shouldn't be it though.( Is everyone else's UE4 updating as quickly as the one in the video? Any feedback is appreciated. I'm trying to figure if thisis a bug or my computer or what? Everything else in the engine runs PERFECTLY, no frame lag or anything. That's really the only thing (as far as I can see anyhow)
@sarfios10 жыл бұрын
It's not the VGA, I'm with the same, but it could be from the CPU or from your storage. I use SSD and it's perfect.
@ViRiXDreamcore10 жыл бұрын
After pestering the Unreal gys and asking around, turns out my CPU's just not fast enough. It'll be interesting to see how well Unity does since it's going to be using the same type of shaders in U5.
@reinux10 жыл бұрын
ViRiX Dreamcore Somehow I doubt it's just a slow CPU issue... Mine's not the greatest, but it takes 10+ seconds to for a change in the base color vector to change with nothing else in the material. I can understand it being a few times slower, but not few tens of times. Something's wrong.
@ViRiXDreamcore10 жыл бұрын
reinux Maybe it was fixed in an update. I've since unsubscribed because I'm doing some work in other engines. When Unity 5 comes out, I'd like to see how they do things. They are going to have a similar material system. Wonder if it'll be just as slow. What kind of CPU do you have? Are you using the latest version of the engine?
@reinux10 жыл бұрын
I'm on a quad core AMD from about four years ago. Phenom II. Definitely not the fastest thing in the world, but I can compile even most C++ programs a lot faster. It's two Moore's Law iterations behind at most... shouldn't be so slow. And yeah, I've had this problem since 4.1. On 4.3 now. I have a feeling things would be fine in Unity 5, but only because we shouldn't be getting this problem in Unreal either. Totally baffled though, Epic doesn't seem to be aware of the problem occurring in newer versions either.

How do you create seperate Elements of the 3D model to apply materials seperately like Element 1 and 2 of that object?
@HoyosJuan10 жыл бұрын
That's donde in your 3d software package (Maya, 3ds max, etc).. In 3ds max, when you're creating the material for an object, there's and option "Multi sub-object" or something like that, if you apply that to your object, this allows you to put a certain number of diferent materials on it.. when you export it from 3ds max and import it into Unreal, it automatically detects that is more than a single material applied to your object.. This is just a basic explanation.. Sorry for my english. :)
@rwkeith10 жыл бұрын
Juan Manuel Hoyos Thanks for your reply, I have been using Blender, but I'm going to give 3ds a shot. Import,Export process in Blender is difficult.

rwkeith You can do it in Blender. I model in 3ds max and export to texture in blender cause im not a fan of 3ds max's methods. BUT, I do create lightmaps in 3ds max.
@GusRenderFactory10 жыл бұрын
rwkeith In Blender: just create as many materials as you want in your object and assign than to the faces of your model (multiple materials in Blender = multiple material slots in Unreal)

ou know, looking at all your videos I am really amazed, but when working with UE it's like watching paint dry; the "realtime" previewing in the material editor takes around 1-2 minutes to change color. A blank slate with just a colorpicker on it. I can run shittons of games, and stuf flike after effects without strain, but I need to wait 1-2 minutes for a blank material to change color? You have got to be kidding me..

There is probably a setting you can change to increase update rate, but at the cost of more cpu or gpu usage.
