John sits down with Night Vision guru Sam Houston to discuss common misconceptions about Night Vision and ways you can save yourself from spending money on the wrong stuff. Topics include white phosphor vs. green, night vision accessories, and the pros and cons of different setups, ex: monocular, binocular, articulating binoculars, etc.

Sam has an extensive background with the technical side of building NVGs as well as using, maintaining, and purchasing them. Whether you're interested in white phosphor or you're just interested in how it can benefit you in home defense, this video will fill in some of the blanks before you make the leap into purchasing your rig.

To everyone saying they are impossibly expensive, just remember that if you own more than 10 guns, and/or more than 5 guns over $1800 you have no room to complain. You can have a good pistol w/ NVG dot, a Carbine w/ Laser and NVG Optic, and a bump helmet with PVS-14 for about $9300, less than most peoples gun collections. Just spend your money smarter and buy quality not quantity

some one why? You can really only use one carbine and one pistol at a time. Night vision is a force multiplier that can be used with your other gear. I get wanting a rifle for hunting as well as a carbine, and perhaps a shotgun, but again, most people who have a true gun collection could afford that and the night vision as I have already shown

Only thing I don't like about the digital night vision is it relies solely on an IR illuminator if I'm not mistaken. the cool thing about the pvs-14 is you don't give away your position to someone else who might have night vision. But it is about 6 times the cost lol

@@forrestbyrnes5930 that moment when you remember that there are thousands of vets with the knowledge of how night vision works. Dude, the best way to defeat 10,000 dollars worth of night vision is force them to come in after you, aka don't be active and mobile at night, force the fight into a place were flash lights, strobes, and knowing the layout are just as potent. Is top of the line night vision good? yes, is it crippling to not have it? no, no not at all. other side note, anyone with any military experience knows that most military vehicles don't have keys, supplies are guarded by the dumbest MFer they can find, and theft happens to support energy drinks, strippers and cigarettes let alone when motivated by life or death. How many friends you got still wearing green that when shit like that happens are going to walk away with truck loads of gear?

I use NODs to trek around the Arizona desert unabated (among many other uses). One of the best investments to date, albeit a _heavy_ investment. The Night Vision game is the epitome of "Buy once - cry once". Do your research before you squeeze the trigger on any purchases. Your junk drawer shouldn't have any NOD's parts. In fact, you shouldn't even have a 'junk drawer' if you've done your research correctly but I digress. Stay classy my friends. EDITED for double spacing.

@BertShackleford
@BertShackleford 4 жыл бұрын
Oise O Pardon the delayed response. The answer is ‘Yes’ to all those questions and wherever I choose to roam. I have found myself in the untouched parts of the Arizona backcountry many times. I can safely say “untouched” because there is zero human garbage to be found anywhere. Rarely will you come across some pristine wilderness that has no trash whatsoever. That’s how you know it’s desolate, pristine and untouched. If you or anyone who lives in AZ and owns NODs would like a trippy experience. May I suggest hiking the Grand Canyon at night. It’ll blow your mind! Words of caution: *Never hike the Superstition Mountains at night!* Heed my warning or you will likely perish. It’s treacherous enough during the day. At night is when your casual day trip turns into a survival lesson. It’s simply not worth it my friends. There’s a reason the local tribes protect that sacred mountain range with _lethal force_ - because it’s theirs and not ours. We don’t try to understand because it’s above our pay grade and that’s fine with me! I respect the Elders, the Tribes and their firm stance. Keep up the good work my friends.

yes gen 1 Russian PVS-7 are garbage however I own a pair of PVS-7 gen 2.5 American made tube and its outstanding. I’ve shot/trained a lot with it gone on night rucks and I’m very happy with the image quality. I couldn’t tell you how many hours I’ve put on it and how many times I’ve dropped it.Price was around $2000 for a ATN PVS-7 and compared to some of the older PVS-14’s it blows them out of the water. Now I know modern day 14’s are the best of the best.. but not all 7’s are garbage. Might make a review on it sometime if anyone is curious . All in all great video John! God bless!

Night vision sucks to use in a real tactical environment. Sure, it's cool on the surface until you try walking through the woods or up a mountain with 100lbs strapped to your back. Anyone who's had to use night vision has eaten shit and fallen hard, it is no fun walking through rough terrain with no natural illumination. Even with good nods you will not see shit. Then you add in night shooting. The only real way is with IR lasers and that's another massive additional expense. For civilian application it just doesn't seem worth it unless you're rich and have a team of trained killers who are putting the time in to keep their skills up. Military applications make sense, we own the night. That said, we own the night because of the amount of pain and suffering we experienced through training and real life applications. The average person buying this just seems like a waste, but more power to you if that's what you want.

82nd paratrooper here.. if anyone is looking for information with getting either a monocular or a dual tube, speaking from tons and tons of combat experience... seriously... a lot... go with 1 tube.. a monocular.. i have oodles of experience with the pvs-14 and the 7 delta's... I ABSOLUTELY HATED the 7D.. it was the dual tube that I absolutely hated.. reason.... I walked around Iraqi farm land mostly in the middle of the night.. trough rough desert terrain to jungle terrain... you can probably relate to this to understand my point. when you call it a night and get ready to crash.. you're in your room and then you shut off the light... what happens to your vision? you can't see SHIT!! right? but after a little bit if your just laying in bed or you wake up in the middle of the night how is your vision? you can see pretty damn well huh? even in a pitch black room you can see a whole lot better than when you just turned off the light.. more explanation than needed so here's shorter version... YOUR EYES ADJUST... you spend some time looking through a binocular (7d, and some others) and then you have to take them off for any given reason while you're outside, your eyes have absolutely no adjustment time. you cant see a thing. sometimes not even a couple feet in front of you... while someone who has adjusted can probably see you a couple hundred yards away with in the same lume with naked eyes.. go with the monocular... In intense combat situations i always felt uneasy with a 7d.. but with my pvs 14s I was able to keep one eye in the nvgs and one eye adjusted to the darkness.. it made maneuvering even the most rugged terrain quite simple.. also with the 7d I always had to refocus lens to see what I was doing up close, then adjust further away incase I make contact with enemy.. I tell you what.. getting shot at and not being able to return fire till I refocused my lens was CRAP! plus lets say you have to administer medical attention to yourself or someone else.. most times we go white light to see what we're doing... can't work in white light with your 7d on.. nope.. you have to lift them out of your way so you can see what you're doing. so now you don't have night vision, plus you need the white light even more because your eyes have not adjusted to the darkness.. its tunnel vision all the time either in night vision or in white light completely blind in the darkness... with the pvs 14s I was always able to keep them in front of my face.. my naked eyes was well adjusted to the dark that sometimes, depending on moon light, I wouldn't even need a white light to operate up close, if I'm bandaging someone up and I'm lacking security, I can just simply look up at direction of fire and look right back down at what I am doing. no need to fumble nvgs up and down and focus and refocus.. F**** THAT.. trust me.. OH and a tip on where to keep your NVGs focused.. If I am indoors, I will focus them to the furthest wall.. will guarantee clear vision in the AO.. but when I go outside.. I try to find the furthest tree top from me and I will focus till the tree top comes in clear.. if I have walked outside and I still not within a clearing other that 15, 20 feet from me I will look up and try to get a star to focus on.. i'll turn that dial till that star becomes crystal clear.. and I will leave it there, that way I can scan my surroundings and see everything that might pose a threat at the greatest distance.. and from that distance to about maybe 10 to 15 feet in front of me is clear enough to identify whatever you'd need to. others standing close to me about10 feet or closer look pretty fuzzy. but enough to where I can't Identify who it is. if it's an enemy you're trying to identify at 5 or 10 feet from you, you done F***ed up somewhere, might as well start doing pushups.. who knows, maybe you'll confuse the F*** out of him and be able to turn the tides.. anyway.. I wanted to share my wisdom. was quite shocked they were recommending binos.. look I have had plenty of experience I still qualified expert at the range out to 300 meters with little to no lume.. monocular is the way to goo!!!.. and it's not as heavy on your head.. you don't want to end up like me with my neck vertebrae completely crushed and 400% out of alignment. God Bless and happy hunting.

I'm running dual PVS14s 10160 tubes coming from only a single 14 and it took me a good whole year to get my hands on my 2nd 14. Then I recently got PVS7 gen3 and I got to say as long as you're using 2 eyes...dual tubes or single tube...it doesn't matter, your dept perception won't change. My awareness and reaction time don't change much if at all between dual 14s and a PVS7 but FOV does change. I can drive with PVS7 better than single PVS14. I can run better. I can aim way faster. PVS7s are too underrated. If you don't have $8k to drop on BNVD, PVS7 hands down.

I remember back when I went through Fielding and training with PVS-7B in 89. Oh what a improvement over the 5s goggles. I got to see all across the spectrum good PVS 4 / TAS 5s to total junk. Then when I went to another unit (AD) and got issued 7A in 98 after having top of line NVGs. I was wondering what the heck. I remembered being told that model was cancelled as out of date in 89. Currently I have 2 different thermal devices one rifle mounted for coyote and hog hunting. Second one I carry at work and home security handheld short range that I can use on 22 firearms. I like to get a PVS-14 this year, I do miss having top line gear... Trying to explain the difference between junk and top line gear to inexperienced people...

To those of us without money, I recommend going to a surplus store and getting an anglehead flashlight with a red filter. Mine costed 5 bucks, but the guy at the checkstand was like "just take it man" and I got it for free. I was a teenager at the time, and that light helped me escape from a lot of rough situations around my town during late-night adventures. The red filter and low-power bulb made it hard to spot from a distance, and didn't have a terrible effect on my dark-adapted vision. So whenever I heard sirens or gang activity heading my direction, I'd hop a fence and boogie through the woods and never got caught. I used the clip on the light to suspend it on the shoulder strap of my backpack where it was convenient for me to reach. In more populated areas, I kept it inside my pack so it wouldn't raise too much suspicion. During winter I could keep it on my belt under a really heavy jacket, although it stuck out like a sore thumb so I didn't rely on that as much. My biggest problem with the light is the size, but it's a design that's been in use since WW2 (with a few changes) and is still in use with poorer militaries today, and can still be found in the US military, mostly in the reserves but I've heard they keep them stored in Humvees overseas. (I can't confirm this because I've never served). There's a saying about equipment designed for the military. "It's designed by retards, for retards." That said, this light is like a superpower. For those of you wondering, the surplus store I went to was 92 Yankee, located near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

I think you could get a high quality gen 2 tube for under $3k or a used gen 3. If that’s still too steep, I’d say sit night vision out. The cheapo stuff, in my opinion, is just throwing away money. $7k for a full setup isn’t the expensive option. It gets far worse. It’s a really expensive game to get into. I’d say a car is a better option for the average civilian 👍
