the reason for it needing ray tracing is voxels. teardown also uses ray tracing because of voxels. Voxels means that you have to render so many different meshes and you start to have to cull a lot of voxels. You can still use rasterization except most of the time ray tracing is actually faster

honestly, i like the terrain deformation/mining in SE. the drill actually eats away ground, and you have to move to more. and you can actually dig. also, the construction, you see it in stages being built. i don't like this just poof its there. otherwise this is looking kinda neat so far. very pretty, loved the ocean depths, wiring is something i always wanted in SE

I like those aspects too. It's visceral in the same way as the trees falling down in Valheim. Aspects like that make me feel much more connected to the game world. On the other hand, for a dev team of (I believe) 2 people, avoiding some of those aspects to focus on your strengths, is probably smart. I like to look at games like Archean as things to play alongside SE, and from that perspective, Archean's looking pretty strong. Maybe one day I'll stumble upon something that's a genuine replacement, but I try not to expect that as the whole voxel thing with physics really hasn't been attempted much.

34:00 what I would like to see is a project that is a bit more ambitious. Have you ever played Sevtech through the ages, for minecraft? Its a modpack that starts you out in the stone age, you collect sticks and fibers and sharp rocks to make tools and fire. Get water and Salt to cure leather and unlock basic technologies like portable water. You learn to smelt metals, to build realistic mineshafts that can cave in if not supported. Eventually you start a industrial revolution and unlock fossil fuels, later on you switch to nuclear energy and you eventually end up going to space, building a moon base, etc.

Captain here: Ray tracing gpu is nessecary (I believe) because of the very detailed terrain. Rendering it with real time shadows on a planetary scale is just a lot faster with the tech

it is way more in-depth that it seems, if you like games like Rising World, Empyrion, etc I highly recommend it. Solo play is a hell of a grind if you're not playing creative mode, but it gets faster the further along you get.

I like the idea of "gear ratio" so you can't do FAST and HIGH TORQUE, you choose where abouts you want it to land on the line.. Enough power to move the earth, but it's VERY VERY SLOW.. or, drive SUPER SUPER FAST, but don't think you are pulling a trailer weighing several tonnes!

I played so many flight sims before playing FPS' but I can't stand playing inverted unless I'm flying. It's like my brain just can't get around the idea of pulling back on my mouse to cause a character's head to move up. It makes sense for a plane because when you pull the yolk back you are causing the ailerons to move down and when you push forward you cause them to move up. I think it's like a combination of preference, what you're used to and how you visualize the controls (if you visualize the controls). However, playing inverted is perfectly fine, even if it's a bit weird, lol.

Hold up, did you say that there wouldn't have been tides? I think the Archean would have seen *much, much* stronger tides than today. It's one of the first things I noticed that was missing from this game. Tides should be a huge part of it if they're trying to be faithful to the time period.

Raytracing has been one of the primary forms of AI detection models for a long time now. It's one of the few places it's been useful on hardware up to this point and one of the many reasons some games suffer massively from large numbers of AI entities. Unless you have a hivemind style AI manager that makes decisions on who gets to make assessments and take actions and when they can do them. This also comes with it's own challenges like for example in the Cryengine2 AI would go "braindead" if there was too many AI trying to do too much and they'd end up low in the action queue waiting for a turn to do something. But seeing it used for sound design is genuinely inspiring and solves an issue I've been contemplating for some time. Sound wave based spacial sound design is a real challenge and using rays to calculate material modifiers and dampening around shapes and corners would be very powerful in having dynamic sound generation such as echoey caves that change based on how far you are from the source, whether you're down a passage, in an open cavern, even obscure the direction of a sound with ambient sound waves bouncing off walls close to you etc.

When you play this game again try to increase the UI percentage can't see what you're doing in your menus the text looks like a 1994 monitor resolution is high which makes the video look good the UI scale so small I can't read it

@@Flipsie yah, SE has a very special niche, I have gotten a few games hoping for a fresh take on it but never quite got it. One of the things I have always loved about SE is "once you find ore you are probably set for that ore for a while" vs the Minecraft "well you randomly found a tiny bit, now hope to randomly find more!" Scrap mechanic had fun parts but the scale just didn't do it for me and getting useful parts felt extra grindy but I can't properly explain either problem better then that. I saw a few others I don't even remember as they never looked enough like what I liked about SE.

With the right manufacturing processes you can make long chain hydrocarbons without needing oil, and since the suit manufacturing thing uses the hydrogen, carbon and silicon you collect to generate plastics, it checks out :)
