My first engine build had a similar issue, the distributor was installed 180 degrees off. That was back in the day of carbs, points, and lots of learning! That was before Holley added a check valve to stop the backfire from blowing the power valve!

Yeah, it seems like it was just thrown away - but there's a lot to be said for using that cheaper first swap to get it all fitted in right, and work out the bugs. The trans isn't a stocker anymore, either, and hasn't been. They learned a lot by stuffing that salvaged setup in, and beating on it for months.

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve set up a few 4v and 2v 4.6’s, it’s very easy to set up a cylinder head 180* out, I had the passengers side out 180 one time, no piston to valve issues, it still started and idled but anything off idle it’s pop and backfire super bad. So you can’t really hurt anything but you’ll find out pretty fast if it’s bad.

Don't worry about the oil pressure. Mine went up about 10-15lb on my Coyote with the Billet OPG. Just a bit tighter tolerances I suppose. Mine is nearly 100lb cold. BTW, welcome to Ford life! It's a lot more stressful, but that makes the result all the more rewarding.

You can get a junk yard 6.2L destroke it with a 4.8L crank to like a 5.5L wind it to 9000 rpm and make almost 800 whp naturally aspirated for like $4-5k including buying the engine...

I put one of those PTI balancers on my Windsor 302 build and it came apart after not too many miles. I think it was an epoxy or something that failed. Luckily the outer wheel stayed on because it hit the crank pulley on that engine and it just spun around the inner. Made a hell of a racket but nothing catastrophic. I stuck the stock one with cracked rubber back on there because I had blown all my money on the build, but I never had a problem with it. Factory one spun to 7 grand no problem. Granted this was like 15 years ago, but figured I'd put that info out there since your pulley is integrated into the balancer on this one and it will be driving your supercharger.

I believe what killed the engine had something to do with the ridiculously high oil pressure (80psi). The normal pressure for a 5.4 is around 25psi. I can think of two things that may have happen. 1: there was something clogging the oil passages which caused the high pressure and starving the engine of oil. Or 2: the high pressure blow out the timing chain tensioner. From the video it looks like they reused many timing components. A high oil pressure such as experienced by this engine would have a good chance at blowing out the seals on the timing chain tensioner. Once it blows out, the tension is released and the chains start banging around till they snap. It all goes down hill from there. Anyways, i'm sad to see this happen. I would like to see it stay a ford, but I would understand if he chooses to go with an LS. It's a shame they've encountered so many problems with the 5.4. I hope they give it another chance, its nice having some diversity in the channel.

Not trying to be hateful, but you have obviously not had a ton of engine building experience, nor have you worked with many modular engines. You are probably correct that 80 is too high for idle, but for it to run properly, it needs a MINIMUM of 10 psi for every 1000 rpm. So, to see 100 is no problem at even 6k. With that, the 3v have a gasket that blows out on the 5.4. The 2v and 4v do not suffer from that, but can blow the tensioners. But since the engine was hydrolocked, none of these problems you listed could have possibly been remotely close to the problem.

@@chriswalker5729 The engine i'm talking about in this comment is not the old engine from the shelby. The engine i'm talking about is the one in this video that blow a few days after this video was posted. Also, I dont need to be an experienced engine builder to know what goes wrong with these engines. My own 4.6 along with other moduler motors that I've worked on have showed me quite a bit about what can go wrong.

Hey Garrett, while I’m certainly digging the new dash, there was a part in today’s video (at 17:15) that made me wish it was a photo if Ed on the gauges. Y’all may have already thought of that and for all I know, maybe the family wasn’t too keen on the idea.
