Pam and Jim, I just bought my own Cobb Cooker on the website. I actually called and spoke with Cobb. He told me the phone had been ringing off the hook with calls following your video. He was just tickled pink and had not known of you, but was thrilled with the response thanks to the two of you. He was so nice and had some great advice as to how to proceed with my purchase. His accent is amazing. I told him my hubby and I had seen the video and always trust the two of you. 🌹-Nora

Seems like alot of negativity here. I have the means and space to make ways of cooking and baking without electricity, but if I lived in an apartment with just a small balcony, I would definitely pay attention to this. Also, if you go camping or should need to leave your home, this would be easy to pack and go. They are showing us options and I appreciate the heck out of that.

So nice to see a South African product being used all over the world. Necessity is the mother of invention and here in South Africa we often need to get along without electricity and clean water so we have a good few tricks up our sleeves. Surviving emergencies is easier with camping equipment as well.

Everyone should have some means to cook off grid. You never know when the electrical power might go out, or gas may be shut off. Even if it is just to heat up water to have sterile water or a morning cup of coffee.

Oh, Ive been asked a time or two, if I was glad to no longer need to boil my water before using it. I usually said 'What'? I had no idea there was an advisary there had been a main water pipe rupture and the utilities suggested we boil our water for a week. It didn't seem to hurt me, that I know of to drink questionable municipal water. I drank my sister's cloudy creek water by mistake. Didn't hurt me.

Thank you, Pam and Jim! I have never heard of this awesome grill! You both sold me on getting one! AND a GIANT Thank you to Jason @ Cobb, Toronto for calling me back just minutes after I left a message. Customer Service is off the charts! A business that actually appreciates customers....a rare thing now. I can't express how excited I am that my "Kitchen in a Box" has already shipped! This is the perfect item for back up! We probably will also use it to save on electricity. I'm thinking cooking dinner in it, outside, will help us avoid heating up the house this summer. (It gets a little hot and humid here! LOL) My sister bought one too. We are both over the moon. Much love from the Mississippi Gulf Coast!

I’ve had a Cobbs BBQ for over ten years. I originally bought it for camping then started using it a few times at home. I find that the flavour of food cooked on a charcoal BBQ is so much better than food cooked on propane or natural gas! I’ve never baked breads or treats in mine so I look forward to see what you cook in yours.

It is possible to bake beautiful, tasty breads, including sourdough, with the Cobb. In order to keep the bottom from getting too dark, use the rack on the deflector pan...the one with the holes. I used 12 cubes of 100% coconut charcoal. They are smaller cubes. I put the dough in a cheap pie pan, because it would just fit. I lit the coals, let them get hot, put on the deflector plate and then the rack, and finally the lid. When the lid felt really hot, about 20 min. from lighting the coals, I lifted it quickly and put the pie pan of risen dough on the rack and put the lid back on. I did not peek for 25 min., though it was hard. At 25 min. I checked the progress, and could see it was baking more on one side than the other, so I just rotated the pan and put the lid back on to continue baking. I think it took about 45 min. total to finish baking. When I took it off the grill, I was afraid the bottom would be burned because of the heat being concentrated in the center bottom. It was the same golden color as the top. It works with loaf pan bread, also. I have baked bread in a Dutch oven before, but this was far easier.

You speak of the 'rack' and then later you speak of a 'grill'. 'Rack' implies a wire rack similar to the one in your home oven. But Im pretty sure you really mean one of the 3 'grill' plates/ pieces. Which one of the 'grill plates' did you put on the deflection pan? They all have holes on the perimeter. Or did you just use the 'rack'? I looked at all the pics online and it appears that the 'rack' sits high above the deflection pan. Thanks
@terryriley5211
@terryriley5211 6 ай бұрын
The plate they held up with all the holes, in addition the ones around the outer diameter, is what I call the deflector plate. They called it a grill grid. The rack is what looks like a round cake cooling rack, in fact that is the kind of rack that was included in earlier models. It is now called a fenced roasting rack. I sometimes add about an ounce or two of water to the moat to make steam at the beginning of the bake. It helps with making a beautiful crust. You want the water evaporated within the first 8-10 minutes of the baking. I hope that helps.

I'm sure you have already covered this in a vlog somewhere, but to make it easier to find...please can Jim make a video for us on how to use charcoal. Best kind to buy, how to get it started, how many to dump in that chimney thing, best lighter starter to use and how to use it, etc. All the basics for those of us that have always depended upon someone else to take care of all this but now we are in the situation of needing to know & do ourselves. I know that some of this was covered in the why store charcoal video, so I will go watch it again. I recollect that video did give some guides as to how many brickets to use for different size pans. Edit, yes, the store charcoal video does explain how many brickets and the different types of brickets, which is best for different types of cooking. Thank you. In the same vein, I don't even know how to use those propane bottle things but would not be so scared to give it a try if Jim can teach us. Now that I have ordered the Cobb Cooker after watching your video, I don't know how to use the charcoal! I am wondering if there is a possibility of baking in a small dutch oven inside the Cobb Cooker for bread. Possible then to add a few brickets on top of a small dutch oven with the lid with the top rim. Please & Thanks, Janice

Just ordered the Cobb Premier Air Kitchen-in-a-Box ($330.00) and 18 cobblestones ($59.95). This will not only be a great addition to our redundant home package, but can certainly see us using this on our camping trips. Thank you for the recommendation! Can’t wait to hear more about it as you learn the ins and outs. We also store bulk charcoal, but the Cobblestones could be handy for times where 2.5 hours would be needed.

It's so nice to know that when Jim and Pam review an item and give it their seal of approval, it's something I can count on. I don't have to spend hours researching and reading, I just know that it's an honest, truthful review. So... after watching this video twice, one by myself and once with my husband, we purchased the Cobb grill off the Cobb website. Getting the extra accessories was definitely the way to go. There was no cookbook in my box, but I did find a smattering of recipes, including pork tenderloin recipe on Cobb webbsite. I agree with you, Pam. The lifting fork does need to be packed on the top! I always enjoy what you present to us. It is nice to see Jim in front of the camera with you. This looks like a wonderful thing to have and use. I have been focusing on different ways to use the things we already have, but this one seems like it would be a good addition because it is portable, uses less briquets, and is compact. I loved all of the extras...the kitchen in a box. Those additions would make it extremely versatile. A definite plus for a grid down situation, especially if it were to be down for a while. Thank you both so much.

I have an older model and not the most expensive, though I do have some accessories. I transported it to our Easter dinner barbecue in the pack and used it in addition to the Weber. I’m afraid I haven’t used it as much as I should have. I’m going to be using it more! We cooked a leg of lamb on the Weber and a rack of lamb on the Cobb using the griddle. It catches the fat drips and it fits in the sink to wash. I love the portability and the way it stays cool to touch.

I was pleased to see your video about the Cobb BBQ/grill. I bought mine about 20 years ago when I had a motorhome. Back then, what is now the 'basic' Cobb was the 'top of the range' (the lid on mine doesn't have an adjustable vent though). I've added various accessories to mine since then, including a few last year in case of a power down or 'EOTWAWKI' situation. I now have the items in your kit plus a pizza stone and a thermometer; this year, I'm planning on buying the rotisserie attachment. Although a bit limited size-wise, it's a brilliant cooker that's really versatile and far safer than most BBQ's. In fact, on some UK campsites, during *hot dry spells when there's more risk of fires breaking out, it's the only type of charcoal BBQ that's allowed. (*Yes, we do get some lovely weather in the UK ... it doesn't rain all of the time 😂.) I'm looking forward to watching you bread baking video soon (that's why I bought the pizza stone). 😊👍

That's a pretty fancy gadget. I use 2 nested aluminum half pans inside a super cheap beach barbeque using lump charcoal and a charcoal chimney to start the fire. I use a third aluminum half pan inverted over meat to bake. All the drippings land in two nested trays holding the charcoal. I make my own lump charcoal using a tracking solar mirror.

@brendanb1541 No. I'm reticent to show my mirror. It creates a 2" beam of white-hot collated light much like a laser. In the wrong hands, it could be weaponized, because it's aimable. I aim it at a sealed crucible holding chunks of oak.

This cob cooker is essentially a tabletop sized backyard bullet smoker. I imagine anything prepared in a bullet smoker will work in one of these. The main difference is volume of charcoal for a bullet smoker to bbq--smoke your protein for a whole day is almost a bag of charcoal. Whereas this cooker needs 8-10 charcoal (you say) briquettes.
@RoseRedHomestead

Kingsford has bag weights four to twenty pounds. We have found that the charcoal takes 8-10 to start and maybe an additional 6-8 to finish the job. We have also added the COBB cobblestone as another variation with the charcoal. Jim

Hello from Australia! I have been using one of these for years, and I have 2 of them and all the attachments, including some rare ones 👀 I have cooked cakes, puddings, and even rotisserie roasts. I even have a basket that can go on the rotisserie which I can put all kinds of things in and roast directly over coals 👀 fuel is so cheap also. Use aluminium foil to create a liner for the mote, and clean-up is even easier. There is even a little kettle that goes on top that is similar to a "Kelly Kettle". It's good for toasting bread too--perfectly. It will take too long to list all the things that I have done over the years with these little things! So there you have it, IMO you have made a most-excellent choice!

I love the idea of this portable grill/cooker and would seriously consider getting one but for the time being I’ll have to park it in the ‘luxury/nice to have’ compartment. I see they offer shipping to Canada (on purchases over $150) but at US$330 (for the kitchen in a bag) by the time taxes, duties and conversion gets factored in, the cost jumps north of C$400! I’d love to have one but cannot afford it at this point in time. Great video though and thanks for sharing!! 😢❤🇨🇦

This is a very interesting item for sure. I assume you can only use it outdoors since it's burning charcoal. While that would still be very useful, and this is absolutely versatile, I primarily would be interesting in something that could be used indoors without electricity. With all those attachments, it kinda looks like a pain. And it is expensive. But for off grid it might be an asset.

Oh! I have 2 of these and all the accessories. Absolutely love it. We take it in our caravan. I cook bread, cakes, pizza, meat - I even boil a kettle on it for hot drinks. I’m also in Australia.

Thank you for letting us know of another way to cook. Up here in Canada it is worrisome. My son has lost electricity twice in the last few week at supper time, a few hours at a time. Unfortunately they are unavailable at the moment, however I did see they had many recipes on the site. Hopefully they will come back in stock soon.

I don't know, but I sure enjoyed watching you two. I love how inventors are coming up with new ideas for off grid cooking. My ways are most simple and basic but they won't make the most delicious food either. I do hope you share as you experiment with it.

We've had this grill for maybe 8 years now, it's an older model, but still great. For sure the charcoal really lasts in this oven/grill, and not having to pack up a big ol' bag of charcoal for just a few days of camping is pretty darned nice. We just filled a gallon bag with charcoal and that usually does it for us. I'm so dang glad you're covering this, because our Cobb has been sitting in the garage because it's really just a grill. But I'm going over to their site, because I do believe a lot of these new things can be added to the old grill. Looks like it's the same size.

I have owned 2 of these. I almost like it, but don't. The non-stick grill grid isn't non-stick and the non-stick finish comes off on the food. Also, the dome is hard to clean on the inside from the soot. However, it does do a good job conserving fuel. I decided that the smallest size Green Egg is more practical in terms of heat retention, evenness of cooking and no need to wash the interior when finished.

hi ~ after watching your video yesterday i went on the cobb website and purchased the kitchen in a box, along with a couple other items. then about an hour later i remembered i wanted to get an extra lifter tool and grommets so i called the company in texas. they were so nice to work with and even gave me an extra code for another discount. my cobb will be here tomorrow and i can't wait to start using it. i've been watching videos on all kinds of ways to cook on it and will be taking it on a camping trip very soon. thanks so much for reviewing this. if not for you, i'd never have known about the cobb, and we're always looking to add to our preps. god bless you pam and jim. you guys are great.

I have had two COBBS grills (along with all the accessories) for almost 18 years - LOVE LOVE them!!! Everything we've cooked on it just comes out so moist and delicious!! After watching your segment on boiling water I have to say - I decided to grab the camp kettle too - which works like a charm (I do however pour the hot water into a thermos to keep it hot longer - and to free up the COBB for cooking other things). Looking forward to seeing your segments on how you use yours.

I actually have an older version of the COBB and it is wonderful. I store 6 charcoal cubes in it and have the wok pan that goes with it. The clean up is relatively easy and of course it gets pushed to the back of my shelving unit and not using it like it should be..... Am downsizing and unearthing alot of this that I should have been using all along.....T-Fal pie maker and the COBB now right in my eyes! LOL!
