Thanks for all your videos Ryan. Every time I feel frustrated and can not make any progress and everything seems to be off on my sculpt, I come back to your videos and every time I get a huge motivation boost. Seriously you are just amazing I can't thank you enough.

Very interesting video. There is a valuable lesson you have shared that applies to more than just sculpting. Now I feel like I understand how important it is to learn new shapes by their basic dimensions first. You truly have to start at the base. That was a really helpful thing to share, thanks for the insight.

Hi Ryan, thanks for this video especially because i have been stuck in the valley of the suck for a while now and didnt think i was progressing. You have shown a great insight into how even professionals even get into the valley of the suck. got into the valley mainly cause i wasnt as good as other artists and not getting any offers for a character artist job. but im still going at it and still sculpting. thanks for the great advice and looking forward to reading the book. all the best

I have been watching your videos every day at the gym before I go to work at the Academy of Art. Your art and your speeches inspire me as an artist and as an educator. I also encourage my students that no matter what their current skill level if they dedicate themselves and work hard they master anything.

Ryan, thanks for all of the info and inspiration. I've been studying anatomy since I was about fifteen, but after reading the War Of Art by Pressfield I've decided that it's time to step up my game. I love the emphasis that you put on the fact that the mental roadmap of anatomy can be applied to anything in life, and that knowledge, skill and technique share the same fundamental principles no matter what you're discipline may be. Keep doing what you're doing, I'll make sure to keep listening.

I would like to point out one of the most important things I have had to come to grips with, and have only been able to do so recently. Back when I was a kid, and loved to draw, we didn't have the internet. So i used to carry this burden, thinking that all good artists just sat down, and instantly turned out great work, with no hiccups or mistakes. I used to belive that they were that good instantly. I see now that everyone has blocks, and everyone has times they have to work extra hard at it.

It was great video. The valley of suck is a real nightmare to me :) I feel that I failed, and you're right, if I can step through it, I can find the reason of feeling suck. I wish I could join once to the workshop

Bought the book as i was watching this XD! In all seriousness you made me realise that I'm not a pure animator I'm a digital sculptor, because of how I've romanticise the human form move meant and dynamic gestures and for this i thank you Mr. Kingslien

In addition I would say that watching many many you tube videos, I see a lot of artists making mistakes in their videos. However this is not a bad thing, this lets me know that they endure the same hurdles I do. That it's a process, and that despite mistakes, you keep going, and it works out. Carrying the burden of believing I had to be perfect ever time I started a project probably knocked me out of a field I would have liked to work in. If only I had someone to explain this to me then.

I liked the story aout the butterfly statue. It reminds me of when I first saw pictures of the pieta or this one I saw done in zbrush of this strong greek figure carrying this huge chain on his back and I just went 'wow, this is astonishing'

Hi There. Unfortunately for me just now I saw this video. It is very useful. Really great video. It is very instructive as well. And based on these lessons are the very wisdom of the advice that you give, how to look at the artist himself, and he continues to run on to. Really great! I see that this advert has expired, but I want to know how I can buy this album because I want this really useful literature. I believe it will be very good.

I sooort of get around the 4 bits thing by putting down what I know, so the canvas or sculpt is an extension of my memory, then it's out and I can think of the next thing. I think that's why during really long pencil studies I've started to discover entirely new relationships and details in the face. Other people don't put something down until it's perfect and they know exactly where to put it, but to me that seems counterproductive to the way things work, and it's quite impossible in 3d sculpting.

@orpheelafondlummis I agree. I remember my teacher, Al Gury, saying to me once, "Its not important to not make mistakes. Its only important to know what mistakes you make so you can correct them quicker." Amazing advice for artists struggling to create art and wonderful advice for life.

@JojahBoy LOL! "Let's sculpt a happy little cloud up here." Thanks for the laugh! Made me go watch some Bob Ross just to reach that happy space again. Thanks for everything Mr. Ross. :)

@crazygtotheberty Don't let it get to you crazygtotheberty. Remember, its just a valley. One thing I have seen happening is people looking for character work end up getting good jobs in environment sculpting. May be an avenue to explore.

not useful talk... makes no sense... i never in my life sculpted and i started abt a month ago and now i can sculpt anything i want and everything wht u explained here has no point in 3D digital sculpting ... thickness or what so ever. books are waist of our time! guys watch and dont read its best way ever to learn! take tutorials not reading!!
@invertexyz10 жыл бұрын
Please, post some of your 3D work so we may see how good you claim to be. If you really are basically a master sculptor now, then that's just natural talent. Tutorials like this are for people who don't have that natural innate talent and thus have to use a variety of technical knowledge to develop the skills needed to sculpt properly.
