Well explained. I'm a Nikon shooter and after first hearing 50MP in an DSLR I laughed. (Many complain about the 36MP of the D800 series) But seeing as how the Medium Raw size comes in at 28MP the choice is yours. Great job Canon.

This is a great camera there is no doubt about it, and probably the best professional photography camera out there. But, There are 3 things that this camera is missing that it would have made it the greatest camera in the market. 1-the moving screen 2- the 4k video resolution and 3- the Headphones jack. For a $3,699 Camera these features shouldn't be a problem.

I would buy this immediately if it had what you listed, but well canon is canon and they'll never listen to the public completely. Honestly, 4K isn't for the pros now considering that it has finally trickled down to the consumer level and pretty much comes standard in high end smartphones. If canon doesn't want to cannibalize their cinema line, then why don't they just make a 8K camera for their cinema line and then charge more for that. But everyone now has 4K except canon and Nikon, though Nikon may have a 4K camera in the works with their Nikon 1 series cameras. Canon has no cameras as of now that compete with the current market as the 5DS is not out yet, in terms of video well they're pretty much last and I can perhaps say that they are beginning to lose to Nikon with their 60 fps.

Thank you, Rudy. I always enjoy your presentations. It's 2022, but the 5DSR remains a very strong potential choice as an upgrade to the 6D for my work as a part-time "utility photographer" serving small nonprofits. The 5DSR turns the Canon EF 135mm F/2 L USM lens into a wonderfully unobtrusive 600mm F/2, and that's fine by me at age 80 and with little desire to carry a hefty 70-200 F/2.8. Go Canon!

Hey *****: I'm considering the 5Ds for underwater photography and Video. I'll imagine stills wise, this will be an absolute game changer. but while i'm below the surface and switch to video, I'm wondering if there are any added benefits of this SLR's 1920 x 1080p / 29.97 fps / 25 fps / 23.98 fps, which is the same as the several other Canon cameras I already own. Any comments/may be in the later videos touch on how video will benefit? Thanks.

Hi Allan V. Crane! The EOS 5DS is a great camera, but it was made more for photographers. The EOS 5DS does not have any added benefits for videos. Since this camera has 50.6 megapixels, the ISO is 6400. The low light capabilities may be too low for what you need. We would suggest looking at the EOS 5D Mark III, which was made more for both photographer and videographers. This camera's ISO is 12,800 in video. DxOmark tests only camera/lens combinations so if there is no Canon camera with more than 24MP then no lens will show as capable of more than 24MP

Photographers looking for the utmost in detail and sharpness in their images will need to be mindful of their shooting technique and camera settings, from the added need for steadiness (consider faster shutter speeds for hand-held shots, or tripod use where possible), the need to focus as precisely as possible, and the need to minimize any possible vibration (the camera's mirror lock-up settings are an example of this, again where their use is appropriate). We also consider the Digital Lens Optimizer feature in Digital Photo Professional to be of significant potential benefit to users of these two new high-resolution cameras. I am starting to feel a need to switch for a newer model. Yet there is no Canon Camera combining the versatility of the MK III with a more recent sensor technology. Hello Canon, I myself did not buy the 5DMKIII as I love shooting with the 5DMKII, however I have wanted to shoot in higher resolutions as I am a landscape photographer, I have heard reports that the iso in the 5DSR is not up to standard and is lacking like the 7D and have been told not to push the camera past 400 ISO do you have any photos that can show me the performance of this camera with high ISO. or should i Just keep the MKII's or go to NIKON's D810. If you're looking for better video capabilities then you should hold out till the M4 comes out. It'll inherently offer way better video capabilities (maybe 4k but who knows) only with far less megapixels. It'll also have faster fps bursts. If you want heavy megapixels then this is where it is.

Yo, I love canon, but they just aren't giving me what I want feature wise. If this was like Sony's a7r ii I would have been a bit happier, but canon still hates to destroy their cinema line and offer 4k to the consumers, whereas Sony isn't afraid to do it and offer 4k with 42 mp at a better price of $3200.

They're cameras designed for different purposes so not superior just different. The Mark III is more of an all-rounder whereas the 5DS and 5DS R are designed for high-resolution images mostly required by Landscape, Architecture and Studio photographers. It depends on what you shoot and how this camera could benefit you. If you have the 6D the mark III isn't much of an upgrade in terms of image quality however the 5DS R will be a significant upgrade in sheer image quality if used properly.

Thanks, I agree when i bought the 6d i researched both the 5&6 and found out that i favour the wifi feature more than the additional memory card slot and the aberration effect reduction.. and i was always looking to get a medium format camera, basically for the higher resolution, which is now available in canon (no need to buy new glass) but the problem is i just discovered that i'll have to upgrade my processing power as well..

butchpouka You may need to upgrade you RAM and storage however processing power should be fine if it's capable of working with your 6D. You won't see a huge difference in terms of quality if you're comparing Medium format to the 5DSR. If anything the 5DSR can actually beat medium format in many areas including image quality.

While the cancelled low-pass filter effect in the EOS 5DS R offers the potential for greater sharpness and fine detail, it also increases the possibility for color artifacts and moire to appear. I'll always agree with these comments, I wouldn't even mind pay an extra thousand or two for a camera that does it all, wifi control, gps, headphone/microphone jack, high MP sensor, great iso perfomance, Cinema 4K recording, no motion jpeg instead perhaps H.265 (then everyone else will begin to use the codec and it will be widely supported), af for video, lots of af points, a tilting touch screen, internal intervolmeter, hdr/hdr video, high fps, usb charging through the camera in addition to the normal charging method (this way we can charge through a mobile battery pack that is commonly used on consumer cameras and phones), silent video controls, af assist light for focusing in the dark (5D mark iii doesn't have this, would be nice if you could turn it off also), have one type of card type, either cf or sd (I don't want to carry a whole bunch of different cards), Manual focus assist (when using manual focus the camera automatically crops and zooms in on a certain area of the screen that allows for easier focusing with manual lenses, peaking, zebras? These aren't a product of my imagination and in fact everything I've listed here is completely possible and has been implemented by other companies, in fact Samsung has the nx-1 and the nx500 which is half the price and has almost all the features i've listed above. And that's the sad part canon is losing out to samsung who is new to the industry and I know what you're saying samsung, well yes samsung seems to be up and coming and is beginning to be pretty good. They even have been offering firmware updates to their nx users every few weeks to add features on to the camera giving it more value than when it was purchased. Panasonic's gh4 is also pretty great though samsung has 28MP sensor going for it with pretty decent low light capabilities, well not as great as the a7s but hey internal 4K is where I'm going and where the rest of the world is going so canon keep up.

Canon introduces the new Canon 5ds and 5dsr after a three year hiatus. I'm so disappointed. The innovations team for serious DSLR's at Canon must be made of people who are stuck in their ways and can't see the benefits of adopting new technology and ideas. After being asleep at the wheel for the past three years, Canon finally comes out with their latest and greatest, which in a vacuum is a fine camera, but in the real world, where other choices exist, is nothing really exciting. After three long years of nothing, Canon gives us more megapixels and not much else. To add insult to injury, the new model doesn't even replace the three year old 5d Mark 3, but is just an alternative to it. Canon still expected it's loyal fan base to flock to the 5d Mark 3 except for cases where they may need 50 megapixels. For those of you that don't need it, you can move along, because they is nothing else to see. Flip out or tilt screen? Nope. Built in WiFi? Nope. Touch control LCD? Nope. Face recognition tracking and autofocus? Nope. These are not even innovative, because the other manufacture have already implemented it in their cameras. Finally, and perhaps most damaging, the dynamic range has not been improved at all. Canon's refusal to at least play catchup hints at a pretentious and naive attitude that say's "serious photographers shouldn't need those things" Something new I haven't heard of??? Nope. Not really. Just sort of copying the already existing Nikon D810 and besting a little in the Megapixles but falling short of it in other areas. Even the autofocus hasn't improve and we don't hear Canon boasting about better high ISO performance so I suspect it may be the same or worst than the existing 5d Mark 3. Why not offer some serious innovations? How about built in radio control of external flashes? That would be really cool. How about offering both traditional optical and evf at a flick of a button? How about a sensor that rotates from landscape to portrait orientation without having to rotate the camera body? Offer something no one else is offering! Nah, not here. Just another case of mine is bigger than yours and nothing else. Meanwhile Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and Samsung, embraces the future and strive to give us more. One might say that Nikon can be accused of a similar lack of innovative spirit, but at least they try. For those of you who think having 50 Megapixles automatically makes you king of the heap, think again. The Nikon D810 has far better dynamic range and iso performance, and ultimately will give you better quality images, faster autofocus and dual card slots that are not handicapped. One also wonders if the current line of Canon lens can handle 50 Megapixels. After 13 years of shooting Canon exclusively, I made the gradual switch away from Canon a year ago and see no reason to come back with the introduction of the 5Ds.

Tarzanboy I respectfully disagree. It's easy to use an external usb 3 card reader to download pictures. I don't know of any pro who downloads from the camera. You run the risk of the battery going dead in the middle of a download and having currupt files. Taking away the headphone jack eliminates a feature that is crutial to those who would use it's video function professionally. But then again, not shooting 4k tells me they now think video is not important for thIs camera. That's a move to protect sales of their cinema line I suspect.

Low light performance is said to be comparable, or slightly better, to the Mk III despite the doubled image resolution. DR, which according to some seems to be the only thing that matters, is also similar to the Mk III. The Sony sensor may still have a slight edge in low ISO DR.

the only thing that I was expecting that I was hoping for 4K video on this beast but still it is a good deal to buy comparing to a medium format camera & it is a better deal than the Pentax & doesn't come with a leaf shutter & larger sensor like the Phase One but I wouldn't but the price tag difference can give the 5Ds r a huge advantage

When the finally the pixelwar stops and the dynamic range increases I´ll relay only on digital for critical work. In the meantime, no modern DSLR can compete in terms of resolution and image quality with my Fuji GW690 mkII

Why does the fps remain at 5fps in cropped mode? The old 5D3 with a single Digic 5+ could drive 23MP at 6fps so why did you lock it out in firmware or go with a slower mirror box? Because 6fps is the action minimum and marketing had to try to force people to also buy a 7D2?? blah.

The 5Ds and sR are adding features Nikon already has in their D800 series bodies such as in camera masking when using a crop setting which I like. Today is October 15, 2020 and B&H is selling the 5Ds for $1300 and the 5DsR for $1500. I went to the B&H website to price a new 6D mark II as an upgrade to my 6D and I was simply blown away when I saw the price of the 5Ds which is $100 less than the 6D mark II. Think I gotta go with the 5Ds instead of the 6D mark II because video is not important to me! :-), I don't think I would see much difference between the 5Ds and 5DsR and saving $200 is important to me, that pays for 128gb memory cards and a battery grip!

Those flat USB 3.0 connectors are fragile. I can see the sockets in the camera breaking from those cables. Better include a jerk strap.

That dynamic range I feel should've been the other most important factor (along with pixel upgrade). However, being a current owner of the 5d and 5d2 I feel it's now time to upgrade to the mark 4 since for me the biggest reason is the need for more pixels based on my personal/professional needs. I usually skip one upgrade since there's not much in "true" innovation. I also wish the mirror life could've been expanded as well but I understand. Having said that, when the Mark 3 came out everybody was crying how Nikon had their 35mp camera and Canon didn't even bother to upgrade on pixels. Now Canon gave the loudest crying consumers what they want then the other type of consumers are crying that they haven't gotten what they want. Amazing! You can't fully satisfy everyone. Bottom line is a 'one dimensional' is better than a hybrid. Simply because a hybrid will never master all phases. A 'one dimensional' knows all that is within its own category. Better to have two different cameras specializing in 2 different things rather than trying to jam pack 2 into 1.

What about lenses? None of the current canon lenses (to my knowledge) will take advantage of 50 megapixels, they're simply not able to resolve that kind of detail. With the D800/810, only the Zeiss Otus is able to get anywhere near the 38 megapixels, with none of the Nikon-branded lenses being anywhere close (you can look this up on DXOMark for yourself). You might get a couple more megapixels of resolving power by using the 5DS/R with current lenses, but there's not going to be any way to get the full 50 mp. Standard lenses, when used on a D700, D3/D4 from nikon do pick up a couple more megapixels when used with the D800/D810, but none will give you the full resolution that even the D800/D810 offers and it's behind the 5DS/R in terms of raw resolving power. It's kind of a shame, we've got these amazing cameras like D810 and 5DS/R, but so few lenses which are designed to take advantage of the huge megapixel count. Perhaps Canon can jump on this market, where Nikon has left us D800/D810 owners wanting more or having to turn to 3rd party lenses.

Inge Johnsson DXOmark measures the resolution of the lenses, you can start your research there. I believe you can change the charts to show you highest resolution first, along with other measurements, like price, brand, etc. Only the Zeiss Otus lenses can get anywhere near the resolution of the D800/D810 and they're not even taking advantage of the full 38 megapixels. You must go into very expensive medium format lenses or older, very high-quality lenses (like Adriana mentioned) if you want to get anywhere near 40 megapixel resolution. To my knowledge, there are no lenses for full-frame which come anywhere close to 50 megapixel resolution. Someone else mentioned pixel pitch, but that's the resolution of the sensor, not the glass itself. If the glass cannot resolve 50 megapixels worth of detail, the pixel pitch and resolution of the sensor is largely irrelevant. That being said, if you look at a lens on something like the Nikon D4 and then look at the same lens tested on the D800/D810, you will notice that you pick up a couple more megapixels of resolution, but you won't be anywhere near the max resolution of the sensor of the D800/810 with the overwhelming majority of lenses.

Scott R The pixel pitch of this 50MP sensor is the same as APS-C 7D Mk II. So at least in the center of the frame they have the same conditions; if the 7D Mk II can leverage its sensor resolution in the center then so can the 5Ds. The question is more about the resolution at the borders and corners. I went to DxOmark and found other lenses that get close to the D800E 36MP sensor resolution, such as the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2G @ 34P-Mpix. The resolution of the resulting image will obviously vary across the frame. I expect several of the best new Canon L lenses to be able to get to at least around 40MP resolution which is double that of the 5D Mk III. But it's really hard to use DxOmark for this as their tests are with current cameras so can only go up to 5D Mk III 22MP sensor.

Sony does the same thing with their a7 series, but the rate of innovation at Sony is insane. Now they have a a7r ii, 42 mp, bsi sensor, 4k video with both super 35 and full sensor readout, can use canon lenses, first curtain electronic shutter for better, sharper photos, in camera stabilization to add prime lenses, all for 3200$. If you ask me this is much better than canon's offering. All canons got is 8 more mp. Oh and by the way did I mention that this camera has a headphone and microphone jack.

I had to ditch the D800, focusing for general shooting, especially sports was a good bit harder. On the tripod, with static subjects, the D800 is great. But because of the density on the sensor, any minute movement is exaggerated. D750 was a much better camera for my uses..i'd beware of these just given the pixel density.

This isn't a pro-sumer camera, it's a pro camera. While modern options like wifi is a nice touch, its not likely that you'll wait around for a single 50-200MB file to transfer to your computer over wifi - much less 20 of them. I do have 3 disappointments (not withstanding the absence of information on its dynamic range and low light). Where is the touchscreen, mirror-less tech, and 4K? At $3,699 for the 5DS and $3,899 5DS R, you'd think 4K video would've been included. Canon made this camera for a specific task so forget about bleed-over benefits. Sadly, it will now hold title for "best resolution DSLR camera" in the industry, but that's where the benefits end - Beyond that honor, there is only "more of the same". Don't get me wrong, I would love to own one, but man I wish there was more to it than what we've all seen before.

Agreed. Having owned the 5D3 for quite some time now, I'm just glad the form factor remained identical. I have only wanted slightly better dynamic range and more megapixels. I think I'll grab the 5DSR and skip on upgrading for a few years afterwards. Nevertheless, I would have been ecstatic with at least 1440p with 30FPS for video.

It's a real let down that the printed manual that comes with the 5dsr is only a short -"quick" manual and not a full manual as with the 5D mk III - I don't bring a computer for a pdf manual with me when shooting wildlife and I really miss having the manual - please offer the printed Full Manual instead of a silly pdf - some of youcustomers are old school like me and like manuals on paper - apart from that I'm very happy with the 5DSR " #CanonUSA #RudyWInston

IMO none of it matters if it has the same old poor dynamic range as all the other Canon cameras. A real shame since the lenses are nice, but it's gotten to the point where the awesome lenses just aren't enough. Looking at Nikon now.... (also why no speed up for the fps in cropped modes like Nikon allows?) (why are you so stingy with critical, basic video features like zebras, focus peaking, zoomed focus box, zoomed video modes? will 4k arrive on Canon on a regular body before others go to 6k?)
