according to canon they released two versions: the 5DS for weddings, portraits, and some products, while the 5DSR is more for landscape, fine art reproduction, architecture etc... the 5DSR may cause moire pattern because it has the low pass filter cancellation. I absolutely love canon and the moment the 5DS hits the market, ill be buying one for my studio work. I already own the 5D mark 3, so having the option of shooting at 50 MP its a great option. The reason they offer the other raw sizes is for people who photograph things that will only be used online... also, if you work as a second shooter, you may be asked to match the same quality of the main photographer.

Did you end up buying one? I’m looking for a camera for landscape photography (very amateur) and want to upgrade from my entry rebel t7i, would you recommend the 5dsr or is there another canon you would say is better?

Fro, love ya, but... a minor correction. The Canon EOS 5Ds R does indeed have the same low-pass filter as the Canon EOS 5Ds, but, they've ADDED a correction filter on top of the low-pass filter to basically negate the impact of the LP filter - so there will be sharper images on the R. They said they had to do it that way instead of just taking out the LP filter for very technical reasons (which I don't understand as I'm not a sensor guy LOL). Secondly, these cams have the CROP factors for folks who are doing architecture or landscape - this is not just a studio cam. Those folks will want more 'reach' on their lenses with the different crop factors.

Jesus Christ... people are you stupid or lack of focus ? Its clear that those 2 cameras are made for 2 purposes : 5Ds - Studio work . Good amount of MP, good DR and good precision of colours. 5DR - Landscape. Those who shoot landscape are not worried about false colour as it is easy to correct in postproduction, the amount of sharpness, higher MP and DR is more important. I just wonder if they fixed DR issue in their new cameras. Also the new Canon 11-24 is aimed mostly for the landscape end architectural photography. This lens is good for all canon cameras but it will go perfect with the 5DR If you want a good video features, high iso capabilities and other newer technological toys implemented in all - rounder cameras then wait for the canon 5DlV which will be released probably by the end of 2015. Simple as f...ck
@FinlandApollo
@FinlandApollo 10 жыл бұрын
But first, they didn't fix the DR issue. It's still as crap as it is in 5D MK3. And the thing with 11-24, I still don't see why spend a 3000$ to that when you could buy a Nikon 14-24 and adapter and use that instead since with wide angle lens, autofocus isn't that hard and you still save money!
@likeawhispr
@likeawhispr 10 жыл бұрын
Finland Apollo Dude, there's a good bit of difference on wide ends of lenses. 11mm vs. 14mm is something that you are very aware of in tight locations. The adapters can cause a lot of missed shots in street photography or in low ambient light even though you're using flash. By the time you focus, it's all over. We will see how the lens compares to the 14-24 soon enough.
@FinlandApollo
@FinlandApollo 10 жыл бұрын
There's difference, it's true but would you rather take a one horizontal shot which is very distorted or two vertical shots with 14mm and stitch them together in post? About focusing, I'm sure that you're not going to use f2.8 all the time since it CA appears. If you stop down to F4, focus to 1,65m, no matter if your subject is from 1 meter to 80 meters away, you don't need to focus as it's still in focus. It's called Hyperfocus. So, focusing isn't issue as I said earlier.

I think this is also a landscape camera, and it saddens me that you didnt mention it. landscape photographers are super hungry for megapixels due to making super detailed images and large prints for close viewing distance in a gallery setting. thanks for the preview. a 50.mega pixel sensor is going to make fantastic LARGE prints able to be viewed in the home setting (aka ~5foot viewing distance)

jonneymendoza People need to stop with the lack of dynamic range. Yeah its not the greatest of the great, but its still great, and thats only if you go by the spec sheet. Until you see what it does no one knows. Also, is hdr just not a thing anymore for anyone looking for more dynamic range out of a landscape ? The camera will fit many different shooters, but for landscapes it does look to be fairly promising.

What's with these megapixels? Even the 24MP of my D610 is a little too much for me. Why not come out with lower MP cameras (12-16MP maybe?) but with amazing color depth and 18 stops of dynamic range and native ISO up to 100.000? I think there's enough high MP cameras out there now.
@Ekiboy1
@Ekiboy1 10 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I own myself a D610 and for me 24mp is enough. Don't see any reason why I would want more megapixels if color depth and dynamic range or ISO performance are the same. Okay, D810 has better better color depth and dynamic range but I don't feel that it is that significant. Interesting to see when there will be camera that really smokes all the other cameras regarding color depth and dynamic range (Sony A7s has pretty amazing ISO capabilities but I want the same ISO capabilities along with Color and DR)

I'm happy to see this camera as more of a photography-centric camera. One where you take amazing photos and specifically photos. I could see the cropped modes for in studio work with macro lenses where you are going to crop it out later anyways. Just saves some files space / bandwidth time ingesting - rendering - and archiving. It's just a minor software tweak. As you said - clearly not a video camera with no clean hdmi out.

I think the 5Ds is more for studio and fashion type of work, because many materials have patterns that can create moire, and you can't be doing an expensive shoot and take the chance of it getting messed up by moire patterns, and the 5DSr without the filter is more for landscape photographers who just want amazing detail and big prints, but I will be curious with 50.6 mp, how much moire the 5DSr might have, or not have, from what i have heard, with the Nikon D800e or D810 there aren't many times wear moire ever shows up, but maybe with 50.6 mp it shows up more, witch might be why they had to do two cameras, but I wish that Canon just made a switch to turn the filter on and off somehow, and just made one camera, and as far as the new 11/24 f4 lens, it better be amazing image quality for that price, when you have the New Tamron 15/30 f2.8 for half the price, and reviews are saying the image quality is better than the Nikon 14/24, and it has IS, but 11 is really wide angle, so if the lens is top notch, landscape photographers will love the extra wide possibilities, so it might be a great match for the 5DSr, but it's typical of Canon to price it through the roof like they did with there newest 24/70 f2.8, and they lost a ton of sales to Tamron

Straight from DPReview: "As far as dynamic range is concerned, we're told that the new 5DS and 5DS R should give the same performance as the current EOS 5D Mark III. If true, this means that the new cameras won't be able to offer the same industry-leading dynamic range of Sony's current APS-C and full-frame sensors, but at least it isn't a step backwards." Uhm... yeah... great job, Canon... lol

From another source it is said that this new sensor has the same DR as the 5D Mark III. It seems they're just satisfied with pushing the megapixel in this go round. I have a feeling that if Canon were to improve DR at all then they'll do it in the 5D Mark IV or 6D Mark II later on down the road.

I commented on the original page but I'll comment here too for visibility: I think the 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes might be useful for video. You're only using like 2 megapixels for HD video anyways right? The quality would remain the same then if your just using a smaller group of pixels to get some extra flexibility from filming. Does that work? I don't know for sure if you can use the crop modes in video, I'll have to try on my camera tomorrow.

Definitely a paradigm shift for Canon, this camera. 50MP on an FX format sensor in RAW? I will be interested in how big the files are as they are over 70Mb in my Nikon D800 (I am thinking 90-100Mb?). I haven't upgraded to the D810 yet because I don't want to, and don't need to (glass is more important to me). But, an interesting camera this is nonetheless. How is its noise performance/ dynamic range, for example? Pricing: always high on "revolutionary" camera bodies. The arrival of this camera might make the prices of the D8xx bodies even more competitive. But for dedicated studio and landscape photographers, this is undoubtedly going to be a firm favourite: no longer will they need to hoof around heavy medium format cameras, and this will give native resolution that fires a torpedo across the bow of a Pentax 645Z or even Hasselblad H4D-50 for a lot let money, and a lot less weight. I would say the EF 11-24mm lens in more interesting: what a range! 11mm rectilinear ??! That is some achievement Canon, F/4 or not. Canon shooters will be delighted that they will no longer require a lens mount adapter to use the Nikon 14-24 instead. The other new interesting lens in this "kind of" range is the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8, which Matt Granger has fully tested, and optically that lens even outshines the Nikkor! So, happy days all round in terms of choice.

ok, so i'm really tired of the people hating on the cropping modes, yes it will be useful for very few in few occasions but lets take this scenario, you are a landscape photographer but also like to shoot wildlife, now let's say you have a 800mm lens, you got extreme tunnel vision and it's super hard to find and follow a bird in the air, if you get the view of a 400mm lens in your greyed out viewfinder you have a much easier time to find that bird, probably no wildlife shooter will buy this camera for this feature but if your doing something like that beside or even just having the option for it is great, I mean, ever seen a BTS photo of making of the hobbit or something? they have a screen with the full sensor on too but then a marked crop so they can see how far away the microphone holder is from the actual frame, so it's really pointless to hate on something that's just there and an option.

Now I doubt very much what I should do. Currently I have a Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi, so I'm in dire need of a new camera. Especially since I am already getting increasingly paid assignments. But I deliberately waited and saved so that I could buy 'the new' 5D. But now it is here, I am not sure whether this is the camera for me. I'm still don't have the luxury to choose my assignments or to purchase a second 5D. Because sometimes I have complete control over the light as with portraits and other studio applications. But I also work very often in clubs where the light is a lot worse. I think the noise per inch still is not a problem for this, because most of the photos of these assignments will be used for Facebook. And in my free time I prefer to shoot landscapes. Where the light is different again. But what is your opinion? What should I do?

I don't get why they bothered making one with an OLPF... Moiré is pretty much a non-issue at that resolution. Anyway, I don't even know what I would do with that kind of resolution. It does give you potential for cropping though if you absolutely have to. But then you also need the right lenses for that so you don't lose too many details so what is even the point... Portrait and landscape photographers, that was my initial thought as well. And I would *love* to see how the two Zeiss Otus lenses are doing on this camera!

IMO the 1.3x and 1.6x crop is probably for landscape shooters who do want a camera with a lot of MPs but if they go backpacking, they can't have a whole lot of lenses, so if they need that extra reach with something like a 24-105, then they can do that. Not optimal, sure. And they sure could crop in in post, but it might seem useful at times.

Ok let me tell you Jared what would i use ot for, i am a wedding photographer and i think 50 megapixels is way too much but even if i go to M RAW at 28 megapixels that is more than a 5D III can give me i would personally shoot all my wedding at M RAW, shoot the session and the formals at full res. My only concern for this use is the low light thing, would i be fine working at ISO 4000 at night? I am guessing yes (cuz i dont imagine it performing worst than 5D III) but thats my only but, 5 fps perfect for me, the 1.6 crop mode could come in handy if i am using my 85 but i want to be a 135 still at 1.8. So id say YES for weddings but depends on the noise managing.

Friedrich Winkler In crop mode, it is 19 mp. It is literally the exact same thing as shooting in full frame mode and cropping later. It literally just uses the center of the sensor. The pixel density is the same. 50 mp full frame sensor pixel density is the same as 19 mp 1.6 crop frame density.

I agree with Fro. This is a studio camera. With its 5Dmk3 matching low ISO dynamic range it can't compete with the Nikon D8xx series or the Sony A7R for landscape work unless you have a series of filters. Why go back to OLPF cancellation like the D800E and not removal like the D810? This camera just demonstrates that in 2015 Canon has absolutely no answer to the excellent sensors its competitors have had for the last three years. Very disapppointing but maybe the 5Dmk4 will have a new, better sensor, or better still just buy the 24mp sensor we see in the D750 instead of giving rehashed old tech. BTW clicking like on the video is a reflection on Fro, not the camera :)

A good friend pointed something out this morning he said "megapixels are surface area equation, and the difference between 36 & 50 isn't that much. Think about it. You have to quadruple the surface area to double the lengths, so double of 36mp would be 144. A bump to 50mp is almost negligible." I thought about it and hes making great points.

I think this new 5Ds and 5DsR is not meant to replace the MKiii. It is designed to give photographers who need higher resolution for large print and/or space to crop. And the 1.3x and 1.6x is for better depth of field and save money to buy another telephoto lenses. Another revolution is the new mechanism in the mirror which I really like it and want to try it in person. Thanks for your review and keep give us good videos!!!

Hello Mr. Polin, I think the only reason, Canon released two bodies is in order to get the new sensor; they either need to have buy so many or its some how apart of the contract with sony.

"5DS R features a low pass cancellation filter" That seems to imply that they're using a filter to cancel low pass, not the deletion of the low pass filter. Could it just be the result of a language translation issue?

Now forgive me for being ignorant, but if you cram that many pixels in a full frame and not a medium format, wouldn't it create a lot of noise?

I have a 5DMarkIII I might buy one of the new ones if they improve on dynamic range, I think it would be a great camera for landscapes..that been said I dont think there is any lens out there that can capture the full capacity of any given sensor. So I am kind of puzzled like you,

I shoot weddings as my primary focus, and in nearly a decade of weddings, I have never needed a file size anywhere close to 50 megapixels. If it had much better ISO performance I would be more likely to get it. That is what I look for primarily. Although I will admit that the idea of having that 1.3 and the 1.6 zoom option is defiantely one I would like to be able to use, even if it means a reduction in megapixels and I suppose it would be good in that area that it has a sensor so packed with pixels. But that also has the drawback of having photosites that are so small that the noise is going to be horrible. I have the 5D3 and the 7D as my backup/second camera when I need more reach, but I still like full frame better for low light.

The 2.8 is very popular amongst both Nikon and Canon users that do star and aurora photography, so 2.8 is something they would have wanted. Also, the 5Ds R sounds like something good for landscape and nature photographers would like as well.

Hey Jared! First of all: thank you for all the Information! Now, I think I see an explation for the 1.6x crop mode in the 5Ds: if you're using a tele lens like the 70-200 for example and use the crop mode it becomes a 320mm. Since you have 50.6mp in the 5Ds, you will still have a bigger file than with the 5D mk III. If you use 200mm on the mkIII which has about 20mp, i would never use the crop mode because you lose too much quality. But with 50.6mp I could see myself using a crop mode so I can get closer to the subject, for example at a concert or for shooting sports. So you dont have to spend extra money on a tele converter or an additional 7DmkII or a bigger tele lens

It's still the same thing if you just crop it later. You don't gain more reach you're simply pre cropping

Biggest thing that I don't get is why is there a crop mode if you don't get a faster frame rate with the crop. I could totally see shooting wildlife and sports with this as long as light is holding alright (below 6400), but dang that's some crazy resolution.

Jared Polin a camera is a tool for the job you choose to do, yes there are cameras aimed for different jobs. But this would make for one heck of a portrait and event camera, or even a documentary camera. That's where your auto focus comes in handy

Unless Canon do something about dynamic range and shadow noise, I'm not interested. Improvements have been pretty negligible since the 1DS Mkii back in 2004. Still use that body and for the most part the results are indistinguishable from my 5d mkii. I now also use my Canon glass on the A7R and that produces clearly superior results. However I did a shoot last week and the bracketed photos leave me with the headache of a 40 gig Lightroom catalogue. Try backing that lot up to disk...

seems like 5d mkii's older brother... 9 years ago 22 megs or w/e it has was like how 50megs is today... i'm sure iso is around the same, just focus's better, probably a little better video functions... 5dmkii is def also not a video camera yet its been used and still used as one for a long time.

I believe the low pass filter version is specifically going to be the camera for people who want to do more video work with their canon DSLR. It will hopefully get rid of or at least greatly reduce moire artifacts, which have plagued the video from DSLR cameras. The sony A7S and A7II cameras are worth looking into and seem to have some great features for video production however, and I am not sure the latest canons are stepping up enough in that department in terms of video features to compete with those for people who are more on the video side of things. Of course you cannot also get 50 mp images out of the sony cameras yet, and so I am guessing the new canon 5D with low pass might be a good addition for people who shoot photos and video for events and weddings but also want to have the ability to have a super big photo for editing compositions later more precisely via cropping in post or even for very large prints. I'm sure it would also make a great studio camera for many despite that it might not be as sharp as the model without the low pass filter, I am sure it will still be sharp enough for most people. It's always nice to have a ton more room to work with I feel. However just dealing with the logistics of huge files will be an additional financial challenge for many as it would require more memory cards, a better computer, and more storage space.

@Themindforest
@Themindforest 10 жыл бұрын
You need to bump up the shutter speed to get rid of motion blur. Since that makes your footage darker when you increase the shutter speed, you need to also use continuous video lights and/or fast lenses with wide aperture to have enough light for a decent exposure.

I still shoot with the 5DSR I was a little spooked by all the 50mp commentary when it came out. I like it still and use it all the time. The files really look nice to me. I mostly use it at ISO 100-400 and use other body for high iso shots. Reluctant to upgrade. Im not sure about the switch to the M format. Lenses are huge and the body is a little too small IMO. Wondering about the future for me but still pretty satisfied. Cant believe its been 5/6 years. Yikes!!!

Hi, I just recently switched from nikon to canon and its great but i am using a crop body to start with and the sigma lens a god send. megapixel is just going over board I mean you would need new computers,lens memory ext for these files. I think a well planned careful composition is a job welldone, I really hope there comes a time when someone creates a much wider scope sensor then a 35mm camera that has a cinematic cinescope view and a fixed lens on it that matches 24 mp sensor 24 megapixel lens. I don't understand why cameras dont match the lens in megapixel,anyway these are only my opinions .happy shooting
