Fassbender is fantastic in this because he feels both natural and disingenuous. He is fully acting the character, but the character is clearly lying for the sake of defending/justifying himself. He doesn't actually care about how "...distressing" some directives are, he only acknowledges so to save face. Same with the section where he talks about what makes him sad. He so clearly is just expressing a corporatized and funneled rendition of the emotion of sadness, nothing else.

In a weird way, he seems to genuinely love her (making her poems, shrines, etc.) but also (spoiler alert) kills her and uses her body as a test subject to create the Xenomorphs

The most terrifying thing about the androids from the Alien franchise is they are working as intended. The ghost is in the machine but it's the ghost of extremely damaged people. Scott's vision future is a grimdark one. Narcissistic psychopaths have finally gained full influence and dominance over human society. However their subordinates have one niggling little flaw holding back their ambition: Occasional bouts of empathetic behavior. Which is seen as nothing more than weakness and is not desired. So these robber barons decided to fix that problem by creating artificial life free of those flaws. They make Psycho-bots on purpose because these are the ultimate vessels of their vision. The way they think ideal humanity should be. "No delusions of morality..." Now do you understand better why the Engineer did what he did? :)

This was made 12 years ago??? it looks absolutely perfect, like it was made today. actually nevermind that, its looks better than perfect, it looks **real**. that bit of machinery at the beginning straight up looks like real footage. Not "real set built for the purpose" real, but actually real, straight from the factory, or storage facility or whatever, where this is supposed to take place. (I'm pretty sure the carriage in front of the box containing David, the one with the rotating circle on it, is actually completely CGI, but its really hard to tell honestly. I wonder if the whole thing is cgi except David in the bag + the hand taking off the cover)
