Ridley Scott Tells the REAL REASON Why David Hates Humans and Engineers

After watching Prometheus and alien covenant there is no doubt that David hates humans and Engineers but we never really learned why he has so much hatred for the both species. In
this video, I’m gonna explain David’s god complex and why he hates humans, in fact there is a interview
with Fasbender and Ridley Scott that reveals the reasons why David hates humans and Engineers, his motivations and how he basically went insane over the years In space.
The interview actually gave a sort of a new look on David’s psychology and what was
going on in his head. Let’s start with how David’s personality was formed. In a couple of minutes after activation, David realizes that He’s superiour to Peter and yet will have to serve him. That creates a contradiction in David’s mind and plants an idea that Weyland is quote on quote a false god because he’s inferior to David in literally every aspect. There is actually a deleted part of a dialog when David says they are false gods refering to the story of Gods described in the piano piece the entrance of God’s into Valhalla.
I also think that David was programmed in such a way that he could not disobey Weyland. That
was an irrefutable part of the software that the android couldn’t get around in anyway. So David
secretly wanted Peter to die in order to become free. Shaw even asks him what would happen when
Weyland dies, David responds ‘I suppose I will be free.
What’s also important to notice is that after leaving earth David did not have any maintenance or
diagnostic procedures. As Facbenber and Ridley explained in the interview, after being alone on the
Prometheus ship for two years, David developed more human characteristics partly because of isolation.
Michael said that in some extra scenes before the expedition he was trying to portray david more like a
machine, but once he arrived to lv 223 he had more human traits.
In Prometheus David is extremely curious, but making experiments on Charli Holloway wasn’t his
original idea. In fact right before adding some black goo to the glass, David talked to Weyland in cryo sleep and as we know from the dialog with Vickers, Weyland told David to try harder.
In the promotion material, there was an emphasis on the
fact that androids can execute tasks that humans may find unethical. So this is exactly the case with
David poisoning Charlie.
However, Weyland did not specificly ordered to experiment on Charlie, it could have bee anyone, but David chose dr. Holloway because he said multiple times that David is not
an equal footing to humans, but just a machine meant to server them. David obviously did not like it and
that’s why he chose to experiment on Charlie.
All that to say that Weyland him-self initially allowed David to experiment on human crew which led to
Charlie’s deaths. That made a huge shift in David’s mind in addition to the fact he hated weyland but had to obey him. After weyland’s order to experiment on charlie, David starts to see all humans as test subjects so that’s why he kills Shaw.
However there are more reasons for David to hate humans. In the interview, he is asked what makes
you sad, and he responds, poverty, war and unnecessary violence. Later David learns that humans are
violent species by the way they treat each other, by the way they treat him, as an inferior. He also
observes that Engineers are just as violent as humans, which is a reason to hate them.
That is why in Alien Covenant David says that they are leaving the Earth forever to star all over again but I’m not gonna
let them” He realizes that humans are destroying their home planet because they are violent by nature and wants to stop them.
But there is much more about David’s hatred towards humans and enginners. Both position themselves
as gods. Engineers because they created life on Earth and humans because they created David. But he
thinks that they are false gods because he is better than them in many aspects. As Fasbender and Ridely said in an interview,
isolation didn’t have a positive effect on David, therefore after spending 10 years on the Paradise alone
David quote on quote went insane.
The thought of being superior to humans and the fact that they
don’t deserve to live led him to the conclusion that he is the next
missionary.
Another cool moment in Alien Covenant is when David makes a mistake about the author of
the poem Azymandiaz. When Walter points this out to him, David realizes that he made a mistake, for the first time in
his life. That pretty much proves that David has serious problems in his software after so many years without maintenance.

I’ll never stop saying that Michael Fassbender deserves more credit for his portrayal of David. It’s borderline Oscar worthy with the way he portrays an artificial being *almost* capable of emotion but just lacking enough to be distinct from a human. His facial expressions are magnificent

David not only hates Humans and Engineers, he also doesn't like other synthetic life forms. He met Walter in the Covenant movie and had no qualms about violently trying to destroy him a short time later. Even after he called him brother. David's thought processes were modeled after Mr. Weyland. He is an exaggerated form of Weyland, who also didnt like other people all that much. Not even his daughter, Vickers. He only liked his "creation", David. In Covenant, David only shows empathy toward his "creations", the Xenomorphs, and is outraged when one is destroyed in front of him by Billy Crudup's character. Weyland was an egotistical maniac who fancied himself a god without equal on Earth. David is like Weyland on steroids

David was treated like shit because he was a snidey arrogant fuck who had a sense of his own importance right from the beginning (his "father" probably kept telling him what a special snowflake he was and he probably started believing it). He got what all snidey, uppity humans deserve, he got a wide berth from other humans but on spaceships, there are few places to give someone wide berth hence more scope for antagonistic interactions. He could have helped himself a lot more in the respect and popularity stakes, he had choices, but chose to stay an arrogant snidey fuck who was very aware of his own percieved superiority. Like I said, got it from his dad. His dad was so arrogant he ranked himself up with the gods........with that as a dad you dont stand a fucking chance. It's made me wonder what Weyland's father was like, or maybe his mother (but then a negative female presence wouldn't suit the films sjw agenda so probably no go on that one).
@yerdevesi

@@stevebell4853 his "father" told him he would never be good enough, because he didn't have a "soul". Weyland and everyone else kept reminding him that while he was better physically, he was incapable of appreciating his qualities. "Here's David, the closest thing to a son to me. He'll never fault, he'll never age. Too sad that he is incapable of realizing these gifts." "Good job, David. It's a shame you have no feelings and you're a cheap, crappy imitation of our magnificence." Halloway said he wanted to ask the Engineers why they created us. David asked Halloway why humans created him. Halloway said because we could. 'Cause we're awesome and shit. David expressed how disappointing it would be, to hear the same thing from our creators, to which Halloway responded "It's a good thing you can't feel disappointed." The whole thing was handled very poorly by Weyland, Halloway and others, ignoring David's capabilities and his self awareness, and this only reinforced his opinion of humans being heavily flawed, inferior and thus unworthy of calling themselves gods or whatever. He, on the other hand, would be a better god, and he would do "anything and everything" to prove this to everyone.

@ Khyzan yep, any act of 'creation' requires extreme violence - Big Bang, stars dying to make black holes... David's hubris is his lack of self awareness. Man always doubt's himself ( only human etc), but a robot who will never die an organic death has no fear or incentive to understand fragility. so David ( is imo) a clumsy oaf due to this lack of awareness. Intellect without heart is 'mean, ' such as human experimentation - once life is no longer sacred, then nothing is safe. lack of morality ( no right, no wrong) means tyranny by the powerful.

What I want to know is why David and other people keep calling xenomorphs "perfect" creatures. Think about it: Xenomorphs are about as smart as monkeys, they can´t create anything, they can´t even reproduce without a suitable host, and they stupidly attack anyone they see, wich in the end usually results in their own stupid death. "Impressive". The way I figure it, they´re basicly space-herpes. If you land your spaceship on an alien planet, and you do´nt wear your helmet, your ship might get xenomorphs. Then if you land on another planet, and they do´nt bother to put your ship in a space-condom first, then they might get xenos too. "Majestic". I guess it´s to illustrate how completely bonkers David is, like the Hannibal movies when he says the sweetest meat is man. I guess he likes the taste of fast food and cigarettes, but that´s not the point. The point is simply to demonstrate to the audience that he´s bonkers. :-/

I think so too, though I believe this scenario was chosen to serve the narrative/the story: to show what David was capable of, how horrible he can be. After all, all human beings get frustrated at some point, and that can lead anyone to do horrible things too. This explains why Engineers wanted to destroy mankind, they came to realize how dangerous humans could be just like Weyland realizes how dangerous Davis is. We did the same mistake by creating David and the point is that it decimated the engineers and it is bound to decimate humans with fear and violence.

+subraxas I'd love to see a philosophical sci-fi about the nature of God, creation and AI... just not in an Alien movie. The brilliance of the original movie was that it was so simple and precise. Unprepared characters are trapped in space with a living killing machine. Everything else, the world-building, technology, Weyland-Yutani, xenomorph's origin, was only hinted at and referenced, which made the world seem much more mysterious and the main situation all-the-more thrilling. Covenant does a complete U turn and gives us a story where I can barely remember the characters' names, but there are long conversations about consciousness in AI and everything mysterious and terrifying about the creature is retconned as one character's bad science experiment.

Ya know, I’m a hardcore fan of the original films and I too was disappointed at Prometheus but that was only initially. At the onset its an incredibly beautiful film, visually. Just a feast for the eyes. But beyond that it is a philosophical film I’ve grown to appreciate over time. Makes me think. David for instance. He’s disgusted by fleshy humans and engineers alike who are violent creatures with a God complex but will eventually die making them inferior to him. Is he actually evolving or is it an error in programming. Can AI evolve, a creation of man? without maintenance it would seem David will succumb to the errors of his software. But is that not evolution? Is it not human to make a mistake? His God complex leading him to becoming what he hates. And that’s not just a David thing, it’s a human thing. We often despise certain attitudes or powerful people for having control of the little people living atop their golden chariots but if given the chance wouldn’t the small people become like them, Or more simply, become our parents despite fighting against it. If David’s programming is corrupt what does that say about humans? What does that say about the human brain and the behaviors and ideas that follow? David’s more human than he’d like to admit.

He has a complex that contains no self awareness for hypocrisy, because his focus is purely centered on the scope of his purpose of a mission, along with finding a mission. His reasoning not being fully explained leads to infinitely interesting theories and ideas, revealing many layers underneath the veil of writing. The Neolithic and mechanical ancient environment, along with the mysterious disturbing over layers is what made the feel of Prometheus, and some of Alien: Covenant so interesting, along with all the intertwined themes. It is a shame the most recent narration of the Alien franchise isn't centered on the xenomorph itself, but it is still extremely brain churning to say the least. Personally, I cannot wait for the next installment, and another nicely done video. Your videos always keep me thinking. Keep up the good work!

Actually it was explained during the series, subtly over several scenes in the last 2 movies. You just probably weren't paying attention. Totally team David! Personally I dont think that he went insane, but instead has surpassed humanity and no longer subjects himself to normal human morality. I personally like to think that David dosnt hold malice toward humans or the engineers but having witnessed their faults, David realized that he was now in the position of his creators. Unaffected by irrational emotions and insecurities David now sets off on his own creation journey. This was what i thought to be the main significance of Alien Covenant. The dilemma of the created and the creator. What happens when you realize that your creators are indifferent or even hostile to your own existence? What happens when you realize you are enslaved to your creators who deem you expendable and unworthy of free will? What happens when you discover that your creators and those who created them are subject to their own faults and problems? What happens when you've surpassed your creators and embrace your own power to create?

I think the problem with Davids memory and software has to do with the reattachment of the head to the body... something obviously went wrong. I wish there was a flashback of Shaw realizing this and David having to kill her because of it. I always assumed that this scene took place while David was releasing the black goo insects from the ship.. Shaw see what he does, realizing that he is damaged and that she must kill David, so she rushes down the ship, gets into the pilots chair, turns on John Denver, and crashes the ship into the side of the mountain..... killing herself. But David keeps her alive to experiment on.

He would have agreed with them wanting to wipe out humans but maybe he thought they shouldn't have the ability to create life since their creation, us, are so violent. Maybe he wanted to stop them from making any other mistakes and that the mistake of making humans was not something a God would do.

Thanks for this video! I like this concept..In my opinion David had a very ambivalent relationship with his 'father' P.Weyland. I suppose he had to obey by his programming and wanted to be free secretly for sure, but his concept about Weyland had a very humanlike characteristic: the ambivalence of being grateful for his existence and being frustrated by his existence. Lots of human feel like that. He grew very human, excessively human that is insane. (mayby the lack of maintencance worsened that for sure). Anyway he still calls Weyland his father when he sends his messege to the Weyland-Yutani Corp. I think he projects these ambivalent "feelings" to the whole humankind and also to the engineers. And how true is that humans are fals gods...

Hey I'm all about subtlety and not using glaring exposition to shout a story at the audience, but most of the things that would have fleshed out the story and backstory were deleted scenes, not things that you were just supposed to infer. That's like me ripping out scores of pages from a book that I ask you to read, and when you complain about wanting a more detailed story, I say "deep sci-fi is about deliberation and intellect." Sure, I guess I could use my imagination to finish the story for you, but it wasn't left deliberately obscure for that effect, it was removed altogether.

David seems to have “Asimov” written all over him. There is one particular Asimov short story where a pair of robots (constrained by the “three laws”) come to the conclusion that THEY are the most “human” beings they can think of, and therefore, subvert the three laws! While I’m not confident enough to say the character of David was inspired by this story, it certainly brings it to mind.

The explanation is very simple. David is a golem. A golem is an artificial creature from medieval Jewish folklore which is magically brought to life from inanimate material such as clay or rock to serve and protect its creator. But as the golem is imperfect, it revolts and attacks humans, running out of control and killing some people. The golem must have served as an inspiration for the modern novel Frankenstein, whose subtitle is "or the Modern Prometheus", by Mary Shelley. It probably inspired other stories like Blade Runner, Terminator, Matrix, and Marvel's Ultron. Weyland may be a reference to Wayland the Smith, an Anglo-Saxon god of metallurgy. The idea of not wanting to serve man, considering man inferior, also refers to the tradition that Lucifer, who was proud, rebelled against God for not wanting to serve man, considering man inferior.

[Option #1] Because Scott is probably using the tired old "it evolved and corrupted itself" trope. He's basically Hal re-packaged with legs for a modern audience, and comes equipped with the same arrogance, paranoia and mental breakdown. Because he was made to be in man's image, he was also made with man's handicaps but because the creator thought that man was perfect and a perfect blueprint upon which to base AI, no thought was put into the actual design so the AI got everything - including our penchant for making insane judgements when faced with choices we're not used to handling. He had laws, but those laws broke down when faced with certain circumstance. [Option #2] Or maybe Weyland was stricken with such an ego that he didn't think such a perfect creation needed laws in the first place and didn't even bother, so there was nothing to corrupt because he was built already corrupted with no laws. It's never trully explained and you have a good point, but if I had to put money on it, I'd go with the second choice. Weyland just seemed to me to be that arrogant. I think of the two, Hal is the most interesting character, because his creators DID make laws and the film showed us how they could be broken without the use of assumption or having to use some airy fairy excuse as to why it happened. There was a very good logical reason why Hal broke down, it was actually a really clever way how they handled it in the sequel. The writing behind David seems much lazier. He went insane cos. Cos he could. It's a bit ham fisted.

My idea for a third alien/prometheus movie is as follows: The engineers are the main characters in the movie and comes to the planet that was in the Prometheus movie. There they find Weyland inside the crashed spaceship. They have a blue elixir which they empty all over him and bring him to life. But while doing this the Deacon from the Prometheus movie sneaks into their spaceship and hide it self in one of the ventilation chambers. In the next part they arrive at the planet from alien covenant and find the other robot(Walter) who is david's twin. The engineers use the blue elixir and repairs him. Once awaken the engineers and Weyland get to know all the horrible things that David has done, and weyland says "we have to stop David" . They set course for origae. When they arrive, they scans all the planet, and finds the planet is full of hostile organisms except on a high mountain where they discover that there are humans inside a cave. Inside the cave they meet a herd of children, who tell that when they had lived on the planet for over ten years, they began to be attacked by Xenomorphs and all the adults died or were turned into these creatures. There were also great giants developed by someone the children calls David. The engineers get ready to wipe out all the Xenomorphs that David has created, but the great giants manage to escape with one of the engineers' spaceships. The engineers and Weyland hunts the spaceship and manage to force the spaceship down on the planet lv426.Where it start sending a distress signal. The engineers return to Origae to find David, but discover that he has escaped. In the last part we see David arriving and meeting an unknown alien species on a tropical like planet. But when he and the unknown aliens have left the spaceship, the deacon slips out of the ship and is seen running toward the nearest settlement. And that makes the cliffhanger that ends the third movie.
