A very interesting concept and a neat design and I'm sure many hobbyists will be building these for a technical novelty if not for anything else. But I think a real world use case for a small, portable 3D-printer is much less common than many think. Yes,some people will actually have a need this will fill (like someone living in a very small apartment/RV/trailer or something like that) but for most I think a "stationary" printer will still be enough. Years ago I thought I want an easily portable printer to take to friend's houses etc. so I got a Turnigy Mini Fabricator. Yes, a lot lesser printer than this one with only 100x100x100mm build volume but it was the most portable machine easily available at that time and would have been fairly easy to transport. For the few months I had it it never left my apartment and I did maybe a dozen parts on it. Never found a real occasion when taking a printer with me would have been a good idea, why bore your friends by having them watch a 3D-printer working for an hour or two when everyone has already seen one? Much easier to print the parts at home doing something else while the printer did it's thing. And for printing at home my larger printers were so much more convenient and had better performance. So I ended up selling it after less than half a year. Still, as said, an extremely interesting design and I'm sure many 3D-printer enthusiasts will want to build one just for the fun of it, even though it's kind of expensive for the specs and probably more fussy to use than a regular printer.

I know a piece of hardened steel can have significant resonance even if its very stiff, but i thought it was at least worth consideration. It's a great project, and I like how it looks, BUT imagine what happens when the model falls down on the extruder. Plastic from the extruder will cover all main components and potentially destroy everything on its way. Cleaning on normal orientated printers is easy, but leaving this thing unattended will end in a disaster.
@3DPrince-zd1se Жыл бұрын
Print fails are generally much more mild than you are suggesting, but you’re right that a messy fail does occasionally happen. The intent of the Positron was for it to be a portable 3D printer for extra fast prototyping and iterating. This will generally lead to it being placed immediately next to the users laptop or in an otherwise close by location. That doesnt mean that you can’t leave the printer unattended, but there certainly is increased risk. Just as with any design, there are great benefits accompanied by unique challenges. We accommodate these challenges in order to reap the benefits. For a typical 3D printer, we accommodate its bulkiness by reserving large spaces and rigid tables for it. For the positron, it requires a bit more supervision.
