I love that it doens't look like a 2010's Roland product like the previous 404 update (with the Aira in your face green), but more like something like they'd design in the 2000's. Not the most important thing at all, but I like how it looks. And... A proper screen? In an affordable Roland product? Mind blown. All the other updates are amazing too. I wish more companies would make more “in the box” gear . The late 90s early 00s had great workstations and samplers. Like the MC303s, Yamaha RS7000, Korg electribe, Emu boxes, etc etc… I never understood why music gear companies don’t just make updated versions of those products , with more storage, memory and modern sounds. I would like to express my unpopular opinion about the device, because most of the reviews state otherway, downplaying certain issues, and I believe a candidate buyer should be informed and not mislead by company groupies. I purchased 404 mk2, more than a year ago. Before a manual of any kind was published, and before the device's functions were clarified. The sampler is great. All the existing functions are spot on, great sound quality, a huge improvement from the mk1, good build quality, an excelllent sequencer system, very well thought for the most part of it. If that was all, I would give it 5/5 stars without a lot of thinking. But, certain aspects of the mk2 just destroy the experience I would like to have, and, unfortunately, I cannot rate it more than 2 or 3 stars out of 5. The main issue is the incapability of the device to sample on the fly. It is just sad that the user is obliged to stop every now and then in order to sample, it degrades the device to just a playback sampler, and I think it deserves better. Maybe Roland should have used a stronger cpu that would handle such a stress, if that's the issue, and maybe they should understand that the needs of today are not the same as they used to be 20 or 30 years ago. I feel intimidated by the impression the company has for the users of the mk2. Why would anyone use a sampler nowadays in order to precompose note by note a performance, when a laptop and a cheap midi controller can give the same or better results? When mk1 came out, programs were not that evolved, and such a laptop oriented solution would be disfunctional, so I can see the initial selling point of mk1. And, back then, Octatrack was not released. And Octatrack changed the game for any future sampler since it came out with the "on the fly" capabilities, and many other samplers followed in the same route. It is just very weird that Roland managed to give so many elegant solutions for most of the functions of the sp 404 mk2, while failing to the core of what a sampler is supposed to be today. Even the cheap, old and humble Korg kp3 resonates better with what sampling is all about now. And Kp3 is almost 20 years in the market. So, to sum it up, I have very mixed emotions for the 404 mk2. I am certain that most beatmakers will love it, though the workflow becomes clunky with the obligatory starts and stops, but really, is beatmaking all a sampler should do? If you want to go further than that, this is not a device for you. Roland should do better. Close, but no banana.

Looks pretty cool, but I've been burned too many times by Roland over the years... Lack of product support. Extra fees and charges for upgrades/functionality that should be free. Obtuse engineering choices with the user interface. Seems like this will be a good product though, SP404 is a rather ubiquitous product.

I love my 404 mk2. I find myself hunched over it much more than my MPC One, even though the MPC One technically has more features. I love the SP sound and workflow. It's a TON of fun to use too.
