This video is an introduction to buffing on musical instruments for those who know very little about buffing.
I do not have any other buffing videos published now, but I hope to publish some in the near future.
You can get most of the supplies mentioned in this video at your local hardware store or from Ferree's Tools.
ferreestoolsinc.com
or Allied Supply (Allied only sells to music stores so you will need to go to a music store to order)

Do you want to leave a tip so Art can continue to make more quality videos?

Thank you for posting all your repair videos. They are so helpful! I am a band director, but I’ve done a lot of work on my instruments and my students’ instruments. It helps to be able to do some of this work as I have taught in rural, low-socioeconomic areas of West Virginia and Ohio.

Do you mind demonstrating what the tripoli does to lacquer? I have a trombone that someone took what looks like sand paper to the entire instrument in an attempt to remove the lacquer. I’m looking for a way to salvage the horn and leave it with a sort of “brushed finish.” If buffing isn’t the best way to do this, do you perhaps have any other ideas? By the way, thanks for the videos- your tips have saved me multiple times!

Tripoli does not remove lacquer very evenly if it is baked. Therefore use a stripping agent from a hardware store. Using a green scotch brite pad will abrade the lacquer and allow the stripper to work more effectively. Then use the Scotch bright pad to create a brushed or scratch brushed finish. If you cannot strip the lacquer, call around to band instrument shops or furniture repair or refinished. The should be able to strip it for a fee. If it is a nitro cellulose lacquer you are stripping, acetone will do it very well. Use a bucket and repeatedly pour over the instrument. Put the used acetone back in the can for other junk projects, degreasing things etc. No need to dump it and probably illegal anyway.

Is there a way to reverse the removed silver plating after the red rogue has done its job? If not, is there any type of polish that will restore the silver?

I hope you normally wear a mask when buffing. knife makers had a short life expectancy because of breathing the grinding and polishing dust.

Very interesting topic! I really wish I could see some kind of comparison between the different buffing compunds. Great work as usual!

I will do some videos on buffing in the near future that will show how each one is used. In the herald trumpet video on Friday (it may be a few Fridays from now), I will use the tripoli and red rouge buffing compounds.
