Good video, except you made one significant mistake from my understanding (I am just learning gnucash). Starting at about 14:14 in the video, you started checking all accounts you thought you would use in the placeholder column. Notice that the top level categories are already checked. That's because place holders are to turn the account into just a category. You cannot add transactions to those accounts if they are tagged as place holders. The main thing I think you want do at this screen is rename accounts if you choose or set opening balances.

excellent video. i am trying to add a checking account to this with a balance that is currently in the account. then make invoices for my customers. i tried doing it, but i must be doing something wrong. when i create a invoice say for $240. if i post it, it goes into my check book as a debt. if i process the payment, it shows a credit. but it basically subtracts the $240 and then adds $240. which means it really zeros out. i dont know what it am doing wrong. do i just post bills that i pay to vendors and maybe not post customer invoices?? this program is a bit confussing

Check if you are using accounts payable and accounts receivable. In business accounting, bills and invoices bounce through those before landing in where they should.

I am using the business one. I figured out to input monthly charges like rent , utilities, expenses etc. I just don’t know what will happen once i create an invoice for a customer ,post, & pay it. Will it show up in my register??? Right now my account is balanced but it shows up like this but in red ($1100) Which i think means i am in the negative that amount, which i am not.

Chris, I think Ifound a problem, As I am using Linux Mint and Gnucash. I have to items saved, I have my programs and one folder call James, Both have the same items. So what I am thinking of is deleting the James, One as they are both the same. the one thing, is that I might delete the wrong items. I have a back up program Freefilesy? as I am using that. also, I am using Gnucash to get the stock/tickers from the web. That is not working for me because of the folders. Need your ideas before I do anything. Thanks

This seems a great program to keep a track of the finance in a small buisness/project. You mention early in the video that only down side to this program is that there is no product inventory. Is there any program that would be good to have as well, alongside this one, that would basically have the only mission to keep track of the product inventory? Perhaps if also an invoice would also be possible to print out from that "product inventory" program to send to the customer, then the invoice would be registered into the GnuCash program? Anyway. Thanks for a good video.

If you don't tell us what the options mean, then you are really telling us nothing more than what we could have gotten just by clicking around in the software ourselves. At 9:01, for instance, what the heck does "Use split action fields" even mean? If you are just going to wave your hands at important things like this during setup, why should we bother to watch any more of your videos. I don't care that YOU know how to set it up for YOU. I care that you show ME everything I might need to be able to set it up for ME.

Did you have a point? Apparently not, since you were too lazy to explain what you mean. You just posted a link. The computer field already has way too many abbreviations, which just reinforces the point that most computer boys are too lazy and lack the creativity to use proper English. On top of that, you don't get to change the pronunciation of a word, just for the sake of being even nerdier than usual. And Linux guys are among the nerdiest of nerds. I checked your link, and it's wrong. Gnu is pronounced like new. This is how to properly pronounce gnu. This is a link with with an actual description. Do you see how this works now? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXqbf3SCfMSLfc0

@@Anthony_in_Bloomington_Indiana, you are correct that English speakers typically pronounce the animal name gnu with a silent g (although the original African word apparently begins with a click sound). But GNU the software project or operating system is typically pronounced with a hard g. Has been for presumably over 30 years. I fear that even if you get @Switched to Linux to bend to your arguments, you'll have somewhere between tens of thousands and millions of others to go after that. :-) The person (Richard Stallman) who made that pronunciation decision was not lazy or lacking in creativity, but he was indeed "nerdier than usual". For some the pronunciation is annoying, for others it is wryly eccentric. But as Stallman says in the "How GNU Was Named" audio clip @Switched to Linux linked to above, at least it doesn't sound like you're saying "New Cash" or "New Software Project" or "New Operating System", which could be confusing.
