WOW. Great series on GnuCash. Thank you so much! I've been using it since about 2001 but really only use it my own way to track things. I'm sure no accountant, but your walk-through videos are very helpful to have a better understanding to use it properly.

I am still cleaning 10 Windows everyday but this vid really helps me with my decision to try out Linux 🤔. I've spent the last couple of weeks learning about distros, desktops and the issues I might face. Great vid coming from a new noob sub 👍🏾.

@@serge5046 Yes, MX Linux is definitely on the forever growing list of distro's to try. I'm in the process of putting together an old Dell PC Desktop so I can set up virtual box and have a play. Thanks for your suggestion Serge, much appreciated.

@@taxaction1 I think MX will be a good choice. That old Dell PC, are you only using that to try out Linux? Then I would suggest that you install it as a normal installation, as you get a much better user experience. Have fun with Linux! (I know I have, every day. ;) )

I been using this for ages. One thing that I tried to figure out is company credit card. I gave up. That was ages ago. Have always done the credit card on paper. Maybe you cover that aspect sometime in future. I had tried a few business book keeping apps, they all were premium paid. I ran into gnucash, loved it, nothing better. It also does personal accounts for anybody reading this and considering giving it a try. Go For It!

so i actually watched you set these accounts as place holder in the first video when you were doing the setup wizard :) it's still a good tutorial though.

Great video! I am looking forward to see the "employee tab" video and what you can and cannot do there. And if I may suggest something, I would love to hear from you some options and suggestions on how to set your accounts' hierarchy from simpler approaches to more complex ones!

Oh, the old "post-processing through the video editor" trick. I should have guessed. I thought perhaps you found Linux software that was doing it during recording. Thanks Tom.

I am pretty sure because the customer has no credit limit they cannot have terms. If you enter a credit limit you might be able to enter terms. A lot of Accounting systems are this way. With no credit limit the customer has to pay C.O.D.

Love this series Tom. I have been procrastinating for a long time on whether to migrate over to Gnucash. I am very comfortable with my Quickbooks, but can't stand the cost and it's direction. My concerns with Gnucash are it's longevity, will it be around for years to come and remain supported? Also, are you using the native software install from the website, or a FlatPak? The Mint repo version seems to be the same as the one recommended for Windows which is versions behind, so I would either download the websites, or use the FlatPak. Personally I do not mind FlatPaks, but not sure if that will be supported long term as the software is. Yes it's supposed to be the future, but who really knows?
@serge50465 жыл бұрын
@JP You should have no fear: at the beginning of April 2018 the version was 2.6.21 and today we are already at 3.5-1 So it is quite active. Cheers

I am using the repo version on peppermint 10, but the copy i am using in this demo is the flatpak. i think it will be around for a while, but if not, keep an older offline Linux computer just like you do with Windows.

Sir, I am using the Gnucash. I am using Linux Mint. I am looking to use Pyhom to down load the program for tickers/stock. So if you have stock in Gnucash. It will place it in the stock. I'm not shore how to write this. As I was watching you on this for billing. Thanks

Why are you transferring into an equity account. When I do it, it turns my equity negative?
@lyingcat9022 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was an incorrect use of accounts. That account is not an equity account and should not have been placed there.

This was a really great tutorial. Where would you place accounts like PayPal or Square on the accounts?
@lyingcat9022 Жыл бұрын
I assume these hold funds until you withdraw them. So they are “Assets”(things the company owns or has control over, of which future benefits are expected… in this case funds) They could go in the same parent account that you’re checking and or savings accounts reside. So Assets:CurrentAssets:PayPal Then when you withdraw funds from PayPal to your Checking account, you will make a split transaction debiting your checking account and crediting the PayPal account and debiting an expense account for whatever fees PayPal may be charging you for the transfers if there are any.

I am curious what this software looks like with a theme like Breeze Dark. I can't stand that minty-theme, it makes it so much less visually attractive to me. If other people do like it, great for them. That is what we all love about Linux, we use whatever we want to use.

@@SwitchedtoLinux Dark themes most of the time look good, don't they? The darker background makes the colors 'pop' more thanks to the greater contrast, while your eyes receive less blue light. win/win I haven't used Peppermint with that dark theme (not in it back then) but I have seen it, it looks good.
