Love all your content! Well done and appreciate you taking all the time to explain all this so well. From land locked South Dakota but going to spend a week on a sail boat in a few months hoping to pass 101-103-104-114!

As an offshore sailor, I want to address the 'chicken gybe'. If you consider the sea state, the chicken gybe may not be so comfortable. Consider that you are in a 20' sea for the gybe. Bringing the bow through the wind will also subject the boat to the hazards of a broadside sea. Is that safer than gybing through a heavy wind while maintaining a downwind and with the sea aspect? I'll not judge as it is a decision made in the moment. When the winds are up and the sea state is raucous, it's a difficult decision. I just hope to make a successful call when presented with that decision.

Well, you can say that you were aware of what happens prior to an accidental gybe. Good job keeping an eye on the jib!

Is it safe to bring the boom and the mainsheet into the central line when being still in the broad reach? Or should we start turning at the same time? Thank you!

Yes of course. It will slow you down but if you are unsure about the skills of your crew, brining the main in early is safer. Also, if you want to slow the boat down for any reason, falling off to a broad reach and bringing in the main will do that. Sail jib only until you are squared away and then let the main back out. Cheers

Very Informative video. Having a sailing venue like that must be wonderful. Quick question. Say like I was crewing on a Flying Scot during a race, and we needed to gybe. Would it be better if we both the skipper and I moved to the Leeward side at the same time during the gybe? Thanks.

Good question. Depends on the wind and sea state. With light winds, you'd most likely move early together to help the boat turn through the gybe. In heavy winds, you'd move together and get that combined wait on the other side quickly. The objective is to keep the boat flat and weight placement is important. There can be many variables that affect your choices. Such as a chill day out sail versus racing.

Thank you Sir! We will give that a try. I am an older guy just learning how to race. I have learned a lot from your videos. Thanks Again.
