Hi Steven, I am very glad to find you on youtube. You are doing a great job, specially for those who have less sources to learn & for the beginers. I am the beginer, and trust me the above video is a best lesson to learn. In the above video, showing how to mix the colors, speaking the name of the colors so closely. I would just say....Thanks for doing a great job. Please keep it up for the beginers like me. Your fan, Saeed Khan

Thanks for your kind words. I remember watching a Ron Ranson video and he said that he'd cut his materials down to the bare minimum as it gave him a better chance of getting more intimate with his brushes and colours and learning how they all reacted together. I used the same strategy and have never changed since. Best of luck with your watercolours.

You know, Steven, I look at your work, I repeat, I learn from you, and I admire it, not knowing English, I understand you. I cry. I cry and pray that God will not allow war! I am a Russian woman and I love people! I love painting, my family, my children, I love you Americans. I love people, I love creativity and I don't want war. I do hope you will continue to demonstrate your painting style on You Tube.

sudhir kothari the palette does look a mess but it works surprisingly well. It only takes a quick wipe with the hake and I've cleaned the colour if I need to. The paints are all dry - I use them like pans. The tray is available on ebay - search for inking trays. I always have the paints in the same place on the palette so I know instinctively where to go with the brush.

Saving paint and money was the very reason I started using it dry on the palette. How long does it last? Each colour varies, depending on how much you use it. I use Ultramarine, Lemon Yellow and Raw Sienna more than anything else so those need refilling every few days. The colours do get a bit dirty but it's amazing how they soon clean up with use hence I never clean my palette.

Thank you for posting so many great videos. You have a great style, and you're very skilled with a basic set of tools. I've spent thousands on paint, paper and brushes; yes, it's nice to have access to so many options, but it's also kind of debilitating. Rather than focus down and just become masterful with a set of tools like you have, I'm constantly changing and trying to learn new things. Not so good. :/ Watching your stuff has inspired me to finally pick something and just make it work! :P

I squeeze out a rectangular shape about 2 inches wide, about the width of my brush and allow to dry. This way I can get plenty of paint on the brush even though the paint is dry. There is also no wasted paint at the end of sessions. I buy my materials from artdiscount dot co dot uk though I don't know if they ship outside Europe. Hope you enjoy your trip to England. Very best wishes and thanks for watching.

I bought some Fabriano Watercolour Paper on your recommendation, but for wet-in-wet I find the paper draws the water in far too quickly. It depends on what your painting style is of course but for blending I am going back to my Canson Heritage.

I think if wet enough at the start it certainly stays damp for long enough to get the sky in and background which is all I need. I appreciate it's not the best paper in the world but it's cheap. I recommend cheap paper to beginners as they are less afraid of making mistakes and learn more

I am sakthivel .Thank you steven you have been so inspirational and i loved your art demos in youtube. You taught me the most valuable lesson in life "To do great things you dont need sophisticated high quality materials, master with what you have". I just hobbiest beginner and just love this technique. But one thing limits me, the brush you are using is made of goat hair. I am feeling guilty to buy that goat hair hake brush, its hard on my heart. So will you please suggest me any alternative synthetic brush. Also please recommand some books and videos on watercolor both big and small brush tecniques.If you reply it will be helpfull to me.Keep doing good stuffs.thankyou
@StevenCronin
@StevenCronin 9 жыл бұрын
+Sakthivel veeraiyan indeed you don't need expensive materials to produce decent quality work. The goat hair hake brush is the only one I've ever used so I can't really offer any alternative I'm afraid. The most useful book I ever read was Ron Ranson 'Skies'. As for videos, I found Frank Clarke's 'Simply Painting' very informative. Check him out at www.SimplyPainting.com Hope this helps. Best of luck and happy painting!

Sakthivel veeraiyan As a farmer I understand your love for goats but I can assure you that they do not suffer when they get their yearly shearing and that way they go into the summer months without having all that hair and artists can have their brushes, local fiber producers can make yarn and us goat farmers get to continue doing what we love. Everybody and every goat wins.

steven..i still dont understand how you use your colours from the palette.. They seem all mixed..so when you choose raw sienna or Ultramarine for the sky, do you get a mix ? Are all your paints dried on the palette ? Where does one get a palette like that ? And is there an advantage to keeping all paints separate and adding them in one region of the palette ?

Great work, man. Not quite sure if you've updated this content, but I was wondering what you think about the lightfastness of Cotman. I've been using these paints on a series of illustrations for about 3 years and the old ones got very faded. I've used more pigment in some of them and they did faded a little bit less, but, even so, much more that I would had expected. Any thoughts?
@StevenCronin
@StevenCronin 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest as soon as I finished the paintings I put them on eBay and send them out in tubes so so I never have the paintings long therefore can't really say with regards to the fading colours. I must try and find out what some other thing as it would be interesting to know what these paintings are going to look like in the future. Cheers Daniel and best of luck with your artwork
@Vermiliontea
@Vermiliontea 3 жыл бұрын
Well, that sounds weird. They should not have faded at all, unless you put them up in a window? The entire modern Cotman range (except for Dioxazine Purple) "should be" ASTFM I or II, even though not all are rated. So what's going on here? The pigments W&N have used for these are among the most durable in existence, and you find the same pigment classes in premium artist ranges. Did you, perchance, use an old Cotman color kit? Dating back many years? Cotman used to be "Student quality", with a lot of massproduced azo pigments. But after Royal Talens introduced their Van Gogh range (which have high permanence), W&N have upped their game with the Cotmans. Even so, even given the old Cotmans, the bright yellows weren't bad and the reds were about as good as genuine Alizarin Crimson, roughly ASTFM IV I guess. I've had one of my watercolors, a portrait, which used a good deal of old fashioned Alizarin paints, hanging for 36 years, but protected from direct daylight. It has not faded at all. It's completely fresh. Including the dainty Alizarin rose. I didn't use Cotman. I used artist colors, but it doesn't matter. And none of the watercolors I have left since almost 50 years back, have faded, though they haven't been exposed to light so they shouldn't. Regardless, all the earth and iron pigments are completely permanent. When it goes to the others, one has to do the same thing one has to do with premium artist paints, think about how one uses them. A number of pigments, the weaker ASTFM II pigments, as the reds, Phthalo Blue GS PB15:3, should not be used very weakly, or for lightly tinting other colors. Particularly not complementary colors. If you want to lightly tint something or dull a complementary color, use Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue or Ultramarine for blue, Burnt Sienna , Light Red or Indian Red for red. Raw Sienna for yellow. Viridian for green. Same for very weak, pale washes. And never mix a color with Chinese White. Chinese White is only for opaque white highlights, not a mixing white. If you want that, get a Gouache white or professional Titanium white instead. Chinese White is a special variation of Zink White that is even more opaque than Titanium white in water techniques. However, it bleaches a lot of different, normally strong pigments. But all these precautions, are the same you need to consider, if you want a high degree of lightfastness, even if you use some brand of premium artist paints. It's how it always have been. All the classical masters used Ochres, Umbers, Siennas, Green Earths, as much as possible, because they're completely permanent, and other colors only for special uses. I have not yet tested the lightfastness of these Cotman paints myself. What I'm saying here is only based on what I know about pigments and paints in general. Which is, quite frankly, very much. The amateur lightfastness tests I've seen on Cotman, show them holding up and showing no weakness at all. But otoh, those tests are not really well done. So Well, if you read this, can you respond back and provide me with some info of which colors you used and the manufacturing (roughly, guess) date? The paints Steven use, Lemon Yellow, Raw Sienna, Light Red, Burnt Umber, should be extremely durable. Ultramarine Blue and Payne's Grey should not be vulnerable either. The only question mark is 'Alizarin Crimson Hue', which may fade if used weakly and exposed to much light. But this is still a modern mixed crystal phase quinacridone, pretty much one of the most durable pigment of that color in existence. The manufacturer and quality of the pigment does matter. As does how it's milled and prepared to a watercolor. So the final answer can only be had by testing the paint itself. I might get an opportunity to do it this year, if this Covid19 pandemic ever lets up. If I do, I will get back to this thread.

Steven, have you ever painted a landscape wet and wet from start to finish ? I am curious to have your answer because if you did it must have been very difficult.
@StevenCronin

+Mireille Romain normally I prefer the paper to be dry when I'm doing the foreground so the paint goes on thicker and stronger with a deeper tone. This helps push all the lighter tones work way back into the distance.

So Steve If you were using a thicker 300lb paper would you be tempted to completely submerge the paper in water before using? You seem to use a superficial amount in your demos with the 130lb. Your vids are very much appreciated. If you were doing a commission work would you be tempted to use artist quality paint? Regards Nick
@StevenCronin
@StevenCronin 10 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing a 300lb paper wouldn't need stretching at all. I have to stretch mine as it will crinkle if I don't at just 130lb. I tried doing commissions but stopped doing them as I felt pressured into making the painting look too much like the photo and tightened up, unable to paint loosely with any freedom. Thanks for watching Nick.

@@mireilleromain4490 You should go to Rosemary & Company brushes! I recommend them highly and u don't have to break the bank buying them. They are a family company that make every brush by hand indidually. They are friendly too. If they don't have it it isn't made. Get their catalog. All brush pics in it are true to size. Always been extremely happy with their brushes. Hope it helps. They are in the UK and now in usa.

No luck there either - they've got them in the States but don't deliver to France, where I'm lurking. So I've ordered from the distant East, for about 15 quid, which ain't excessive, and will have to twiddle the thumbs as the century drifts past! Thanks again, Robin Best. @@StevenCronin

Как вы считаете, нужно ли использовать большое количество тюбиков (разных оттенков, например 20?). В русском языке цветы и цвет (пишутся одинаково в этом падеже), наверное поэтому вы не поняли)
@StevenCronin
@StevenCronin 7 жыл бұрын
I think you're asking how many colours do you need to have on your palette? Personally I've only ever used 7. These are listed in the video description. I know some people use a lot more but it comes down to personal choice and what feels right for you. It's just a case of experimenting and seeing what works for you. I only paint loose impressions and don't try and copy the exact colour of what I'm painting so maybe it's easier for me to use fewer colours. I hope I've answered your question. Best of luck and happy painting!
