I see a lot of comments on the question that was asked toward the end. In fact, as the discussion was going on, I was also getting deeply involved as everyone else here. Swamiji was very generous in entertaining the questions for a long time. I felt the initial question was good to delve deeper into what Swamiji explained in the entire discourse. But, if the motive of the initial question was to bring out cultural influence on the deep philosophical understanding of the world then the question at the beginning as I understood it initially, seems to have been unwittingly chanced upon. For most of the people here, by the very fact that they are trying to understand every bit in so much detail, pure consciousness, as the light of lights and eternal witness from Birth to Death, is probably theoretically comprehended even if not in experience. However, the whole problem in understanding arises at "Birth" and "Death." Secondly, there is also another problem raised, that is, is this transmigration only for human beings (how about other sentient and non-sentient beings)? Most religions and philosophies do conceive of something similar to soul. This is necessary to tackle the problems of boundary conditions i.e. Birth and Death. Some go directly from death to souls and then the treatment of souls is different for different cultures, until soul transmigrates. I think the beauty of Vedanta is that it not only tackles the problem of the boundary conditions so elegantly but also, prepares for transmigration by separating experience from consciousness during life itself. Vedanta is so old but I have not seen any other philosophy dealing with this problem with such convincing elegance! The second question - about why not other sentient bodies - was also dealt by Swamiji, when he said whenever there is "experience", the transmigration happens. By theory of Karma, we have to believe that souls transmigrate across sentient beings. So, who or what, provides the continuity at the boundary? Vedantic model provides a solution while others don't even touch it. While it is interesting to think about every being in the universe (sentient and non-sentient) and try to conjecture what happens to each one, and to some extent the teaching and teacher also do entertain such adventures, in my opinion, Vedanta is very "personal". The truth is really about "me". If only I can realize it - and if I do, such questions may not even arise! Who Knows! With humble regards, Mitra

I think swami sarvapriyananda had previously explained about non reflective objects and reflective objects like water or mirrors. What enables transmigration in subtle bodies like mind is cuz of its reflective nature that keeps it in transit

Maharaj is not only explaining the concept but also giving solid logic to practically "prove" the subject. Now we know, this is not just a sweet philosophy, it can be logically proved and there are few people irrespective of relegion or nation, who can actually experience it like a living reality.

It is really enlightening. It helps to resolve problems of life. My understanding of pure consciousness is that it choiceless as explained by Swami ji. The personality of individual is traped finite consciousness (content of consciousness) attached with body and mind. I feel the end of body means reunion of trapped consciousness with the pure consciousness. There is no chance of continuation of the personality afterwards I mean after death. In fact when we say tat tvm ashi then we claim you are brham so how can ther be birth and death of atman. Hari Om

To the lady who asked the questions at 59:42 ; 1:02:22 ; 1:04:56 ; etc. Have you found your answers? I think it has to do with both Maya & Karma. Also, stars have continuity. When they 'die', their energy & material is converted to the stuff that eventually becomes other things/objects, as well as living creatures, which evolve, to become higher, sentient, reasoning beings. The 'mirror' has to be polished first, before it can reflect Consciousness.

Namaste Swamiji. what I understand from those asking the questions is that there is a confusion between Pure Consciousness and human consciousness that we experience when we come into existence..Also the concept of rebirth, which will be there because of our past karmas hence the idea of being reborn again and again takes place. Swamiji a chart which you have used earlier in your talks will be of great benefit I feel..... Thank you so much OM

Thank you Swamiji for making us realise the ignorance we were steeped in. This segregation of the Real Self from this body mind complex and knowing the 'Knower' or the Witness is indeed the quintessence of our life. I offer my obicience at your feet. But I have a question. When the body falls, can the Pure Consciousness 'know' it's departure? Please throw some light on this question. Koti koti Pranam . Jai Shree Krishna 🙏🙏🙏

Regarding the ladies question why only the subtle form of humans takes another name and form, because the others - like the chairs and tables are only physical matter and energy. they take other shapes and forms, they do not have subtle energies or karmic balance (or do they?) Swamiji can you please shed light on whether other animals and plants have subtle energies and their karmic life. Thank You

Also in the previous lectures ... it has been said by swamiji that the transaction between Bramhan and soles (Reflected conscientiousness) is beginning-less .... is it with all the soles ? ..... Why human hitting other human is bad karma and lion killing other animals is fair .... Please through some light on this Swamiji ..... Thanks you

Inanimate objects do not have jeev- atma. Some of those are even man made objects. Plants and animals, however, do have jrrv-atma which means they are bound by karma and would only be freed through enlightenment.

@@k223968 Karma is determined by intention of the doer. A lion kills for food (survival) and it is its basic nature to act out of its desire to survive. It can't help it. Killing for other purposes would however, lead to grave consequences. Hope this helps.

Sree Gurubhyo Namah "Descartes held that non-human animals could be reductively explained as automata - De homine, 1662." But Advaita explains beyond doubt, that even the lives of non-human animals are illumined by the Pure Consciousness alone ... and it doesn't end there ... it goes to explain the existence of non-living beings too!! "Brahma Satyam Jagath Mithya Jeevo Brahmaiva Naparah" If we are attempting to derive logic behind this Mithya Loka and beyond & after, only Karma logic applies!! 0:00 peace chant 0:50 subject today Why are we studying this today? 4:00 19th verse - how am i not the body? 4:20 chanting verse 19 8:50 buddhist meditation of sitting in cremation ground and watching body decay 10:10 sureshwaracharya - when your excreta is within you, it is you. The moment it leaves you, it is dirty, unthinkable, unmentionable, unseeable, unsmellable, untouchable. But that is what we carry around ourselves throughout our lives. You are pure, body is impure. 12:40 chanting verse 20 Atma is the illuminer, it is pure and clear Deham , the body is darkness Light and darkness - we combine them together Light is pointing to darkness and saying it is me What greater ignorance can there be? 13:45 commentary by vidyaranya Atman is self luminous like the sun The sun illumens everything and the sun is pure In what sense it is pure? Consciousness is not affected by what it illumens 16:50 consciousness is the light of lights - explanation 18:05 jyotira jyoti - without consciousness, nothing will be revealed 19:54 there are so many illuminators apart from you 20:32 what does purity of consciousness mean? Unmixed with everything 22:09 all our experiences come and go in consciousness - mirror example 23:50 My mind has a question. Does the consciousness appropriate things to itself or is it the mind? - Blue Sky Example 24:50 desha, kala, vastu - space, time, object 26:25 The body has consciousness? No, Object of consciousness! Consciousness aware of the body. 28:00 Dream - Deep Sleep - Wakeup Example - Body drifts in and out of awareness. 29:55 mistake, error, forgetfulness is death 30:59 chanting verse 21 31:33 Atma - nitya - eternal - sat - because it is the nature of existence Deha - anitya - non eternal - asat - because it is an effect, false 32:10 body changes from birth to old age - but i am the same 30:34 experiencer experiences the change Experiencer is apart from the experience To note any change, the change must be something that is experienced. It cannot be the experiencer. Any kind of change, to be experienced, must be apart from the experience. Death, destruction, creation are changes. 34:45 Anyone has any rebuttals? Cause I'm sold. 36:00 Philosophy: Problem of other people having minds. How do you know other people have minds? 36:18 Vedanta: You have access only to your consciousness. 36:30 All of us say I. But we mean different things. All I’s are the same. 37:30 Bhagavad Geeta - Chapter 2 - Verse 16 - ‘Philosophical’ Heart of entire Bhagavad Geeta Hot potato example, Hot water example, Hot pan example, Intrinsic heat of fire example Borrowed existence forms something else analogy 42:52 if something has intrinsic existence, what will happen to it? Pure existence is eternal. 45:28 Self is existence. - Shankaracharya in commentary of Bhagavad Geeta - Chapter 2 - Verse 16. 46:45 What is eternal? What is non eternal? Self is eternal because it is not counter positive of destruction. - Navya Nyaya Language - Neo Logic - 1000 years old. 49:30 Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu 49:49 1000 year debate - 200 BC to 800 AD - Buddhists and Hindus 51:00 Madhusudhana Saraswathi - Advaita Siddhi - Navya Nyaya Language 51:10 Shankaracharya Language is simple. 51:30 Where does personality come here? So we are only aware of consciousness or Atman because of our bodies and minds. So after death, we are no longer aware of consciousness even though consciousness is eternal. Is this right? And is the enlightened person aware of consciousness after death of body?

Lec 6 maybe : Atman is a knower. Hence purem body is a mixture of flesh and blood and so on and liquids. Body is IMPURE. We always experience the body, especially when we're sick. We can't tolerate the slightest of gross sights like excretions and yet we carry it within ourselves all the time. Life forces struggle an arduous war against death - Buddhist meditation on watching dead body. Verse 20: Sun illumines everything and sun itself is pure. Light may fall on ditch water, on a jar full of water - the element of light maintains its purity - it is not affected by what it illumines. The flashlight is not affected by illumining the sadhu or the thief. Similarly, consciousness is unaffected by what it reveals - good and bad, dharma and adharma - it is swacchh. It's the light of lights. There is light which reveals the room. Your eyes reveal the light in the room. Your mind through its control over the eyes reveals the light in your eyes and through awareness of the contents of the mind and think about what to think about and what not to think about, consciousness reveal the mind and the eyes and the light in the room. What does purity mean? It is pure when it is unmixed with anything else. Consciousness by itself is pure. Why? Consciousness reveals everything. If there was a mixture In consciousness, to know that also we'd require consciousness to reveal that mixture. That would already make it different from consciousness. All our experiences come and go in consciousness. Happiness and sadness comes and goes and light of consciousness is shone upon them as they come and go. We are aware of being happy and sad. Problem comes when we try to hold on to this. It's like a mirror trying to hold on to the reflection in the mirror. They do not belong to consciousness. Time, space and every object - we are aware of the passing of time, it is an object of consciousness. We are aware of near and far - place. Space is in consciousness, not consciousness in space. The moment I go to sleep body disappears from my awareness. What continues through all these states is consciousness. My body drifts in and out of awareness. The knower is calling himself the known - great foolishness and ignorance. Error is death. Forgetfulness of our real nature is death. This body will die. Verse 21: Self is eternal. Body experience the changes from being a child to a teen to an adult to an old man but it's always 'I' am the child , 'I' am the teen etc. - the awareness is constant. We are that which experiences the body. I have the experience of a conscious continuity. Death and destruction and creation is a change and if you are the experiencer, you must be constant and what is changing and is being experienced must be constant but they are not. They are to be apart from the experiencer. Philipsophical Heart of BG : Boiling Potatoes - Heat doesn't belong to the potatoes, it's borrowed from boiling water which has borrowed best from the pan, which has borrowed heat from the fire. FIRE HAS HEAT INTRINSICALLY. IT LASTS FOREVER. The borrowed heat comes and goes, but that heat which stays forever is intrinsic to it. If something borrows existence, it will come into existence, exist for a while and then lose existence. Birth and death are signs of borrowed existence. Example of table which has borrowed existence from the table. What remains despite external reshaping or reselling or any such activity is the essence, which is wood. Existence itself never goes out of existence. Atman is said to be eternal because it is existence itself.

Consciousness never leaves. chidabhasa (or, reflected consciousness) needs medium, body is something where it reflects, when body dies, it stops getting reflected over that body complex and it appears as if the jeeva died.

It occurs to me, after the Q&A, that Vedanta points to the liberation of Brahman from the ignorance of the body/mind , which "will not survive" and "will not be liberated". Therefore; it seems that "we" - as "knower" are doomed to annihilation; the body being gross matter and the mind being subtle matter yet neither being the "I"; leaving only the Witness to survive, which is Brahman. This complies with Vedanta saying that only Brahman exists - no other being is recognized - no duality. My reaction to my/this interpretation, is to wonder what happens to the Enlightened? I presume that, after their current life is over, no remnant of their gross/subtle bodies will remain and no evidence of their personality or Self will be found within Brahman. So, at first blush, I believe that Vedanta is telling us some very hard truths: That nothing of any lasting value comes from our cycles of birth and death, our differences in personality, temperament and wisdom are at best temporary and apply only to this world. We, at best, can only use our mind and body (born in ignorance and operated in error) to approach an attitude of total abandonment, at which point, all that we perceive ourselves to be must be sacrificed and given over to destruction; so that the underlying, ever-silent yet infinite Brahman may recognize It's non-duality and cease to be conscious of the Maya-contrived error that creates this Universe. I am ready to accept these terms BUT - I wonder why Brahman doesn't accept responsibility for our ignorance and assist us in undoing the error?

That's not a correct understanding. The following explanation might help you. 1)First thing to appreciate is that while Aparokshanubhuti is an advanced text and there are many more technical details to be understood about these Vedanta concepts, Swami Sarva is simplifying it to the vanilla level given the level of the audience. Even then many are struggling as apparent from the pre-last questioner. On the other side, the next level audience, those who have the capacity to grasp it and analyze further (like yourself) also get a bit confused because they haven't clarified the basics. The point is, Vedanta is a very solid & logical teaching, and the teacher here is also really good, but the issue is having a mismatch between the audience and the level of the lecture. In a traditional, systematic setup of Vedantic study, there are classes/grades/levels just like in modern education. So, what would really benefit you is doing some study of the pre-material to get the fundamentals clear. I recommend KZbin lectures of Ira Schepetin for the absolute basics which will help a lot. He has studied Vedanta in a traditional setup in India and his lectures are meant for Western/modern mindset & focus on the absolute basics. 2)Now, Brahman is not to be liberated from anything. It is never bound or tainted by anything. Brahman is ever liberated, permanent, unchanging & absolute. It is not something that exists, it is existence itself. Or, putting it the other way round, the absolute/real 'stuff' of everything is existence itself. Quantum science is now just beginning to realize the possibility of it. They are calling it 'the field of existence'. That absolute existence is conscious as well. More accurately, consciousness is existence itself. So that ultimate consciousness, existence & bliss (being free and unlimited) or Sat-Chit-Anand in Sanskrit, is called Brahman. The entire material/thought/space-time-causation universe appears in that 'ocean' of Existence/Consciousness or Brahman. Obviously, that doesn't need to be liberated. We as conscious beings exist in it and enjoy our existence & consciousness because of it. Big bangs & big crunches happen (Visarga & Vilaya in Sanskrit), universes appear and resolve back into it. That is Brahman. 3)So what is to be liberated and liberated from what? That which is bound by ignorance. What is that? The mind (technically it's Jiva-atma, but let's keep it simple for now)! Mind is ignorant of it's real nature - the infinite Brahman - and wrongly believes itself to be the little body-mind-person. Due to this ignorance, it suffers from the wordly stuff, impermanence and fear of mortality. Ignorance is to be removed by right knowledge. 4) Saying "we are doomed" is an outcome of error caused by ignorance. The error being, "I am this body-mind-person that is temporary"! Jnana, is I am Brahman, that appears as this, that & everything else. I was there before anything appeared, and I will be there when everything disappears. Where could I go? Interestingly, these same words were said by the realized sage - Maharishi Ramana, to his devotees, who were crying and begging him to "not go" at this time of death. He said, "but guys, where could I go! 5)Then, saying that "Brahman should accept responsibility for my enlightenment, is utter foolishness"! You yourself are Brahman. It is not something out there, apart from you. Take your own responsibility. There's no one else to point it to anyway. There's only you in reality, nothing else, just appearances. Secondly, Brahman is not bound at all. From the plane of Brahman, none of all this exists or troubles it (i.e, you)! It is the mind for which this world exist. Its like the false 3D world which is created by wearing those glasses. Or, ultra modern 7D immersive VR games where you put on the gear and enter the world of monsters and get all the thrills. But you enjoy that because you remember you are not really that character which is being chased by monsters, and nothing inside that world can kill the real you in this plane. 6) If this much is clear, a whole lot of other confusion will go away.

Otherwise, the cycle would never end..then what's behind that other (may be someone says God or God's consiousness) then whats behind that.....and so on. . So, in non dualism- they says ,as equivalentlt that your consiousness is Gods consiousness..hence they says Aham Brahamsmi...(tht's my understanding, at least)

Claim @ 35:24, nobody has seen the knower!? Then why Ramakrishna proclaim to Swami Vivekananda - I have seen God as I am seeing you. What about those mind-body complexes who being termed as enlightened ones.

He says you can only experience your own 'experiencer' not others' 'experiencer'. Just like you can't experience other people's pain or pleasures. About Ramakrishna, he meant 'seeing' figuratively.

that lady disciple went on insisting that if mortal objects stars and planets die once for all without any scope for rebirth then how is mortal human body b an exception....but if we go by scientific explanation even though the then name and form of mortal star or planet gets destroyed does it really dies by mass energy relation and conservation of energy it only gets converted in to some other form...and does exists... but if it is only for d sake of arguement with prejudies she has all guilty of spoiling spirit of true knowledge in to her credit...

Aatma does not, “operate this little person”. Atma is not “shining through” individuals, the individuals are revealed in Atma. I think Swamiji reversed the structure of reality by mistake. It is not the Jeeva that is aware of, or aware because of the Atma. If the jeeva is aware because of aatma then the aatma is not “alakshayam” as state by the Maanduky. You can then infer aatma from the awareness of the jeeva. To make a jeeva aware would be the quality of Atma. That makes aatma not-nirguna. The reflection-through-individuals relates Atma to individuals. That means it is not Asang. This whole construct is a travesty! The jeeva is NOT aware. The Atma is aware. That is why our true nature is the eternal aatma, and not the death-prone jeeva. What is the aatma aware of? Atma is aware of all possibilities, past-present-future, including events that appear to our limited minds as “real”. Our Vishva, taijas, and praagya are all nondual from aatma-Brahm. But that doesn’t mean our experiences are real. They are mithya- they are reported reality, not absolute reality. The absolute reality is awareness, not what is in awareness. YOU, qua Atma, are aware, because awareness is your true nature. There is no awareness shining through you.

why is the ignorance so enveloping? I mean that, in the apparent amount of people, why so few can see this?

Just like only a few centuries ago no one knew about the wheel or gravity. Yet, once they were discovered and the underlying principles understood many more people started grasping the concepts. Today, even a school kid knows about gravity and how it influences everything on earth. That wouldn't have been the case before Newton.
