The focus of FE is what makes a competent, satisfying, socially useful and healthful life, both in our personal and professional worlds. Life is first and foremost about action and movement. The embryo is all about reproducing, migrating, interacting cells that grow into tissues, organs and all the body’s structures; a process that continues throughout life. Infancy and childhood prepare us for the adult’s life, which is about effective and purposeful action in the domains of education, work, relationship, child-rearing and self-nurturance. Feeling, thought and memory all provide resources and feedback so that our actions and behaviour can be useful, constructive and gratifying.
FE is about form:
1) the form nature gives each of us, including our genetic inheritance;
2) the forms family, ancestry and society offer us as directions in life; and
3) the personal choices and efforts we make on our own behalf.
How we combine this trio of influences - in relation to life experience, challenges, crises, traumas and opportunities - is the key to a life worth living. What have we formed and are forming out of this “stuff of life”?
FE provides a methodology synchronous with this formative function of life. Built around the “Bodying Practice” of Stanley Keleman’s Formative Psychology, it provides a protocol to facilitate our adaptation to the continually changing circumstances and situations of life. It can thus help cope with the possibilities and the uncertainties of our life transitions - from infancy, to childhood, to young and fully-formed adulthood, to maturity and aging.
FE can be a powerful support for craniosacral therapists, other somatic and complementary therapists, psychotherapists and counsellors, medical practitioners, educators, coaches, actors and dancers; in fact everyone who deals with the intimate relation of form to function, expression and feeling.
