In this episode Joel and Antonia explain the difference between Introverted Intuition and Extraverted Intuition.
IN THIS PODCAST YOU'LL FIND:
Intuition is an effectively advanced pattern recognition. It is a learning style basically speculating the train of thought following what’s behind the curtain.
Intuitives are not the majority so the world is not designed for them.
People who have sensory learning styles aren’t comfortable speculating. They want more information to be safe and secure.
We don’t have enough explanation why some people see the world profoundly.
Everyone uses intuition to some degree.
Intuition isn’t judgmental. Its nature is really just trying to understand what’s happening behind the curtain.
Inside us, our intuition is working in conjunction with our mind’s ability to evaluate the information it takes in. All by itself, intuition is totally non-judgemental. It’s simply a process of learning.
Two types of intuition: Introverted vs Extraverted Intuition
------------------------------------------------------
INTROVERTED INTUITION (Ni)
(we call it "Perspectives")
Perspectives have the ability to watch their own minds form a pattern. When they hear people talk or do something, their mind will shift into the other person’s perspective and get a sense of what’s going on.
Perspective users oftentimes don’t reveal this kind of genius. They almost have the ability to predict future events.
In perspectives, you are able to see how large groups of people are going to react.
The process of learning takes some time to develop. Perspectives are very easy to be distracted. It’s almost like a fragile process sometimes. If there’s a lot of sensory input, it’s hard to stay focused because it’s a fragile process.
When working on problem, they wouldn’t know how they arrived at the solution. If they get distracted, they might never be able to pick up the trail again.
Out of the 25%, only 10% are using perspectives.
Perspective people tend to have a lot of one sided relationships and so they have very unique needs.
Because they don’t have that many people who understand how it works, it’s difficult for them to rise up to become better version of themselves.
----------------------------------------------------
EXTRAVERTED INTUITION (Ne)
(we call it "Exploration")
Unlike perspectives who are slow paced, Exploration on the other hand, is more about exploring the world and understanding patterns on the outside world. They tend to be very interactive and engaging.
They’re able to understand the connections and relationships to things that other people don’t. It’s about new connections.
Intuition is interested in speed of information and depth of insight. Both types of intuition do this but Exploration is more inclined to speed of information and Perspectives likes the depth of insights.
The world needs both styles of intuition. Without this, we would actually stagnate.
The more you give yourself permission and make your intuition more powerful and strong, you could be truly unstoppable in making great things.

As an INTJ woman department director I had a direct report position that was mission critical to our outcome. Long story short, I created an exact questionnaire for every applicant and administered the MBTI to each. I really liked a particular candidate, she and I got along well , BUT when I saw her MBTI score I wanted to throw up. Me: INTJ, Her: ISFJ. I almost didn’t hire her because of our innate differences. In my world no room for feelings. However, I thought about it, interviewed a few more people when the light 💡 came on. Hiring someone different would be an ASSET. I brought her back in and had a frank conversation about conflict. I told her for certain that we’d have conflicts but knowing this ahead of time we could talk about it, present our feeling and thinking arguments so we could create a better department and program. BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!!!!!!! Tytyy🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I'm am INTJ and currently a scientist at a prominent university with a promising career ahead. In elementary school my teachers kind of implied to my parents that something was wrong with me, I might have been better off with going to a school for children with mental disabilities. I was already 14 years old when I realized that you can't be happy in this world unless you force on a mask, the mask of the average "good student". Every minute of school was a struggle until I made it to university where I managed to find my very small tribe and my best friend an INFP. Knowing my type these days gives me a huge relief that I'm not alone, there was never anything wrong with me. Thanks for this podcast :)

its so good to know that i am not as completely alone in this world as i feel most of the time. there are many days that i just really dont like being me anymore because it is so lonely sometimes and i feel like no one understands me and im tired of being treated as a strange outsider, im tired of seeing the way people truely feel about me without them telling me. im tired of knowing what people really feel vs. what they say, it gives me the feeling that just about every person in this world is a liar. on the positive side though it sure is very interesting inside my head. my mental activity is never ever boring.

You're so right about education systems not being well suited for intuitives. Like many INTJ's (well, in my experience) I've been able to sort drift through without too much effort, allowing Ni to make the necessary connections. However, I know that INTPs and INFPs don't find it so easy, in part because - lacking even weak Se - they can't space out/doodle/do homework during class and simultaneously pay enough attention to get the important bits. I've seen many times some of the most creative and intelligent students struggle with homework, not because it's too difficult but just because they don't find it interesting and lack the motivation to do something they see as pointless. An ideal arrangement would first and foremost allow intuitives and students with interests to explore those interests ... but alas, that's not terribly easy in a class of 20+ students.

As an ENTP I thank you to putting this problem into words. I heard a lot of explanations from teachers why homeworks are important from Si point of view, but understanding the point was no help. It is like with Dr. House - random talk about termits can be more to us usefull than doing homeworks.

When you explained about Perspectives (introverted intuition) I just had to shed a tear about all the times I was easily foreseeing stuff and could not explain to others why it was so vivid/important to me when nobody could see it coming in the next week I could so clearly see it come to pass in the next month(s). I have learned to indeed not show my perspectives to people because they often get irritated about such "unsure events".. These days I do have my events of seeing into the future but... wait for the right moment/person to speak about those things.

Loved this... as a (left-handed) female INTJ I have always been considered the "weird one". Although growing up confused as to why I was not necessarily fitting in , it fortunately didn't stop me from going through life confidently. However, I can completely understand how other Nis may feel out of place in this world and in turn feel self-conscious. The MBTI was brought to my attention a few years ago by one of my clients (a psychologist) and it's been a fascination of mine ever since: a way to make sense of people and explain why they are the way they are. A system. Anyway... I could go on and on... thanks again!

When intuition comes to mind I think of 'cause and effect' because Ni is trying to condense what it knows to understand the 'origin' of its information while Ne is branching outward to collect patterns to understand the 'potential' of the information it has gathered.

Another comment lol... I’ve always used terms like “I’m internalizing my feelings” or “I can see your perspective”, or “If I had that perspective, I could see how you feel that way”. It’s always came easy to put myself in other peoples shoes. Many people think that I can see into the future, like I’m some kind of a psychic... all I really do is see patterns and know that history repeats itself and so I get a pretty clear knowledge on how it will play out again. Until recently, I didn’t realize how unique that way of thinking is. Thank you 🙏🏻

I think u will find perspectives in a lot of older literature. Eg Jesus, Buddha, a lot of the enlightened beings ‘gods’ even possibly Shakespeare and all those poetic and metaphoric types. These ppl are my true and real mentors who worked out their own minds and became enlightened and therefore could predict other’s minds as a result of self realisations and self awareness enlightenment etc. some brilliant minds were these genius that very rare few people understand to this day and lots of people still misinformed retort their metaphorical and highly creative speech for this is exactly how my unconscious introverted intuition works. Very symbolic and takes lots of self analysis and awareness but is soooooo much fun

I'm turning 50 this year, just 1 month ago I discovered that I am an INFJ-A, my whole life all of a sudden makes sense. Public school was a slow death inside me day after day. I've had answers that I have no worldy reason for knowing my entire life. Only 2 years ago someone finally told me that I am spiritually prophetically gifted. Dreams, visions and warnings. So these topics have created a new universe in my mind to explore. So I see at least 6 evolutions in the personality traits. 1.Base line (hard wiring.) 2. Immature phase 3. Immature overlapping maturity. 4. Maturity 5. Spiritual awakening. 6. Then a redeemed base line. Embracing how you are made. There is probably endless variations of between phases. Anyway I finally make sense to myself. And I have finally found a friend that I connect with and we understand each other, another INFJ.

I went to a trade school to learn my trade. As I observed my collegues, I noticed that they had a lot of bias while they practiced their energy work on others... not every energy worker has pure motives through a lense and filter that is safe and effective.

I'm an ENFJ with a pretty robust Perspectives process, and I can definitely vouch for what Joel and Antonia are saying. I work in government and politics, so I rely on Ni quite frequently to assess social movements, political campaigns, candidate quality, etc. Using those assessments, which seem to happen at a subconscious level, I forecast election outcomes, geopolitical shifts, and more. Listen, I don't bat 1000, but it's an uncannily accurate perceiving function. I remember taking part in a study two years ago where the instructors asked participants to answer the question "Where do you see the world in 15 years," and I specifically mentioned the likelihood of armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine as well as unprecedented civil unrest in Iran in the near future. That kind of stuff even freaks me out!

Ni is so easy. It's easy! All that you have to do is not-think up the answer you're looking for :-). Not-thinking is not thinking, nor no thoughts, but a relaxed state that meets your life's needs. Just like going to sleep; you're in a relaxed state and you process the thoughts of the day without knowing that you're doing it. Then you come out of it - you wake up - and whatever your brain did while asleep, without your involvement, now you have resolved some issue that troubled you the day before(without trying, without knowing how, without effort). Well something like that. It's the perfect function to be penniless and wise...

I feel so uncomfortable when I'm in a seat that has my back facing the entrance or the open area in the restaurant. This is the first time I've heard a podcast or a video explaining why a person who relies on Ni does this, and now I see the connection! i love how you’re talking about pictures forming in heads as a result of words. i have aphantasia so im not getting any image from any word but recently i learned that pictures from words exist. so does my knowledge that people have pictures and i don’t count as understanding that different pictures form from words and therefore label me as a perspectives user? nah, just kidding. im so bad at it i didn’t even know that no one else really sees nothing as i do edit: i’ve had a struggle for a while now with wondering whether i’m even intuition dominant and your explanation with buttons made me realise just how Ne i really am. i completely suck at connecting with people and i see other people with N reading into people which i just really can’t do. people i kinda take at their word sort of. however, buttons, devices, objects i can understand even though i don’t really know it much. recently, i was helping someone set up their facebook account. i have absolutely no experience with facebook itself, but i have used things like twitter, tumblr and instagram for a while so i was able to navigate it almost as though i had used it for years (though facebook is so weird in its set up i really don’t like it)

So interesting. I am so in the middle of these. I do get the "I don't really come up with an answer myself, it comes to me" way more often when it comes to problem solving. But then again, I am def. the person who can see the way things are interconnected. So.. then I lean more towards ENTP. But then .. that beautiful quote comes "If exploration is thinking outside the box, then perspective is thinking about the box". I believe then, it's Ni again. Which would make me INTJ or INFJ.

I don't know if this is an Ne (exploration) thing, but I keep misinterpreting stuff, which can be really frustrating and makes me feel stupid at times. For example, somebody tells me they have a Jaguar and I think they are talking about their pet and not (which would make a whole lot more sense) about their car.😆 (This is a fictional example, but you get the point.) Or recently I saw a poster with the word "IN" on it (in big letters, followed by other words) and instead of seeing it as an actual word with a meaning I thought I and N were the initials for something (like AI- artificial intelligence). And this is not even the weirdest stuff my mind comes up with. It's usually AFTER my brain makes some sort of connection that I realize it doesn't actually make any sense.😏

Hearing the one sided relationship portion really cut deep. Maybe I can share this with my loved ones and hope they take the time to really understand This genuinely brought tears to my eyes. I use Ni and I find Ne users frustrating. When trying to get the meaning of a simple statement. Ne users turn it into an endless loop of possibilities even though the answer is right in front of them. Even if you tell them the answer, they turn it into another possibilities. It's hard to come to a simple conclusion to a problem with them.

Every time I’ve denied or betrayed my Ni when it arose it would usually get me into BIG trouble. I still feel uneasy listening and acting upon it because I grew up in a sensor environment and conditioned myself to undermine Ni but I’m working on listening to it again. Thanks for the video! Super enlightening! I loved how you described Ni distractions and situating ourselves so we can see what’s coming! It’s so true!!! It makes me a jumpy driver though when turning corners where I can’t see around them 😆 Also, if I am situated in a way that I can’t see what/who’s coming in to my environment, I feel so vulnerable and naked. It definitely makes for a very uncomfortable workspace. Also, I always thought Ni to be of the first cognitive functions to evolve. I believe we were the first to evolve and slowly are becoming extinct.

Great insights. Just one little suggestion: "perspectives tends to depth and exploration to breadth" (speed is about time and thus perspectives likes slower and exploration likes speedier). Breadth: Explorers love connecting Everything to Everything - natural for them to do this - they are the best metaphor makers - salt cellars and husbands.

This is one of my absolute favourite podcasts! This is my take on it: intuition is new. All humans have all functions. The difference is the individual choice of operation one makes early in life. If Bobby chooses to lean more on his intuition than his senses, his intuition will be much more developed than in that of a child who leans more on his/her senses. They both have a preferred way of operating in life. I believe these choices are made soon after birth. Also, throughout the ages, intuition has not been a desired function. Those that would control the masses saw intuition as a huge threat. Witch hunts and the like, have taught man to suppress his intuition and rely only on his senses. Now that the world is changing so fast with regards to consciousness, future babies will choose their intuition over their senses. The more the world becomes conscious, the less man will rely on his senses. In the future, intuition - when truly developed - will be almost instant. And, by the way, I use both forms of intuition daily.

I personally use both of these functions despite the fact that that's not supposed to be how that works. The one thing described in this video that I don't relate to is the idea that being an intuition user equates fearlessness. The one Big Five trait that's not represented in Myers Briggs or Jungian functions is the trait of neuroticism. As a neurotic intuitive, functioning in the real world is near impossible because I have to constantly force faith in my intuition and it just feels like I'm shy diving without a parachute.

It's cultivated and fine tuned from having restrictions on the physical senses. And from alot of trauma and not having validation or support or peers. The part of the bible where Lilith was accused of wanting sexual domination,. She was actually trying to help people who couldn't perceive the hidden and interdimensional traps and dangers. That they couldn't and still can't see,. Kinda like what has been happening with the current times. Not one person apologized for dismissing and attacking me trying to alert,. Not even a knowledgement for trying to have the cops force a mental health evaluation or trying to prove me unfit parent.

I agree with Emanuel that it's not new, but it's rare. I'm just now learning what the term is called for persons who don't think intuitively which is "sensors". I mean I can't talk to ANYBODY about being intuitive and have lost jobs and friendships because I'm deemed a know-it-all and persons find me unnerving or just odd coz I know this stuff that I have NO idea how I know and it's not something I can stop, so I keep it to myself. I still don't know how it works.

40:32 You may call me a super-weirdo, but for me these are two simultaneous processes, on two planes- one horizontal (speed of info in and out- mostly in) and one vertical (depth, a much, much slower pace). Imagine two pyramids one on top of each other, with a series of parallel horizontal planes which are the interface with the world. These areas (cross sections of the pyramids) get smaller and smaller as my focus on inner processes increases. I am very sorry for not being able to explain it better but I hope you can visualise it. Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe I AM crazy, after all… 🙁

Each person uses both of these to certain degrees. Like a muscle they can be trained up, sort of, my own experience of introverted intuition has been that it just happens. If the conscious mind is brought to task through a deep understanding of each then it is possible to ‘break the box.’

From personal experience I've found intuitives to be, on average, more intelligent than sensors. If I'm discussing something with an intelligent sensor they will understand what I'm trying to convey better than what an unintelligent intuitive (intuition does not equal IQ) , but if what I'm talking about is loaded with intuition they'll just find what I'm saying to be pointless/uninteresting. I don't want to be biased, but it really just seems to me that intuitives are also more creative.

I'll respectfully disagree here. Sensors want to fully understand the data before forming the theory (not that they *can't*). So the pace and process of getting there can be frustrating to us Intuitives ... but that doesn't make them less intelligent. When they *do* get to the point where they form a theory, it's usually more reliably accurate - so in cases where that is critical (medicine etc) sensors will have an edge, actually. Just appreciate our relative strengths and weaknesses without judgement ;)

tested three times as INTJ. it's a blessing and a curse. we formulate abstractions and most think we're jumping to conclusions. but in fact, most are lazy thinkers. why not find your own presuppositions? if i'm to explain these abstractions, it will be an essay at least 50 pages long. it's very helpful for intuitives to read other authors that are the same, this will help them articulate much better. Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Dosteyevsky are good recommendations. as an example of how my mind works, i listened to a clip by leewang hom, watched my mind form patterns, where have i heard that before? pachebelle cannon d! the highest level of abstraction in philosophy, such as power and beauty, is best expressed in art and music. Nietzsche never mentioned what power is, or what is it related to, but he does talk a lot about power, health, and dance. but for INTJ, we're either obsessed with beauty (aesthetics), or prefer to live in a box.

Main reason why I’m an intuitive is because instead of patterns, I just have an extremely abstract imagination. I like to think that we all use the 8 functions to some degree, I don’t like the whole “you’re an intp so you ONLY use Ne” outlook, it’s very black/white ans quite rigid. I do believe we all naturally have a preference for one, but that doesn’t mean we never tap into the othee. Humans are complex, so while you may prefer Ne since you’re an INTP that doesn’t inherently mean that you have to always use that function when analyzing the abstract if that makes sense lol
