In this video, I will discuss Intrusive thoughts and unwanted thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are basically thoughts that invade one's mind again and again. In this video, I am going to explain why having intrusive thoughts isn't actually the problem - reacting to them is.
I explain how the battle of intrusive thoughts is actually right after you experience the thought. You can either react to the thought by trying to argue with it, suppress it, avoid it - Or you can simply experience it and move on with your day. Understanding this simple choice is crucial to overcoming Intrusive Thoughts. This is video 1 in a 3-part series. In video 2 I will explain how suppressing thoughts actually makes them worse. And in video 3 I will introduce some simple techniques you can do that will help quiet down your mind.

I think of my OCD as a blessing these days, albeit a massive challenge for my mental and emotional development through life. It has been a major factor towards leading me to meditation, something that has changed m life. The mind is like a river, always flowing, sometimes fast and crazy, sometimes lazily and peacefully. The key is to think of yourself as a guy sitting in a chair on the river banks, chilling out and watching the river (your thoughts) go by. Observing them rather than reacting to them. This is easier said than done, and I am still training my subconscious to do this. I highly recommend meditation to anyone struggling to gain control over their mind in any fashion.

i finally decided to google what has been happening inside my head for a long time now. I am so thankful to this video because I have been so confused and scared for a long time. It really is exhausting and feels like I am a horrible person and I feel constantly at war with myself. To know I am not alone and not crazy.... and that there is a reason behind this is comforting.

Same, I was actually terrified to Google it as I felt admitting I was having these thoughts was admitting defeat to them. Even knowing I'm not alone and being advised on how to work through it has been such a relief!

My intrusive thoughts have now officially interrupted my sleep. Last night I laid in bed and thought of everything positive I could. I kept telling myself they are just thoughts and the intrusive thought was you could go stab someone. I don’t want to stab someone. I eventually fell asleep and when I had a shower I cried then got mad at myself and then came to the realisation of I can either let these define my life, or I can continue speaking to my counsellor and doing the right things in life to minimise the intrusive thoughts. I hate that the thoughts feel so real. I know who I am. Or who I was. The intrusive thoughts started after my older brother died. It was so traumatic for me. I am trying to be me but it’s so hard and I am very unsure of who I am some days and the intrusive thoughts do not help I dwell on them and then I feel bad bc I had that thought. I am not my thoughts I am the creator of my reality. Your videos really help thank you

(I’m just reposting this from a previous comment, just in case someone else may see it and it may help them, as it helped me) I really really recommend the ho’oponopono prayer. It’s a very old Hawaiian prayer, and it’s done wonders for me when I’m at my weakest. When something comes to your mind that hurts you say this, and mean every word, focus on every word, and feel them. It goes like this: I’m sorry Please forgive me I love you Thank-you Try it, and definitely try researching the prayer. It’s worth it. I hoke you all heal from the pain you’re in, you all deserve to :)

I get these intrusive thoughts but it's almost always religious wise. I'm not too sure why, but I'm fixated on the thought that I've some how accidentally sold my soul or something like that, and I thought it was some paranoid schizophrenia which worried me, but it's relieving to know that it's this. I was shocked at first when you said specifically thinking of if you're going to heaven or hell. It's not that great for me, because when I'm doing nothing and thinking to myself and remember of that thought, I'm almost always just repeating in my head "I'm going to heaven" in case I end up saying "I'm going to hell" or something like that. This can go on for hours on end, even if I'm thinking of something else that'll be playing in my mind in the background. It's usually triggers about talking about things like heaven and hell that sets this off for me for a few weeks/months and then I won't have those thoughts anymore. OCD was probably the last thing I expected, but I'm pretty sure it's that now. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this! I have these intrusive thoughts about self harm ever since I had a miscarriage in november 2019. For example, the one about the car had been in my mind for a very long time. It was a constant battle in my mind about the cause of these kind of thoughts. I've been going to a therapist for a few months now but it's a relief to know that I'm not alone.

@@gilestrada6997 Good to hear. Also wanted to let you know that God loves you, and we have all sinned against God, but God in His love made a way for us to escape His wrath on our sin and that is through Jesus Christ. He came in the Flesh born of a Virgin, lived a perfect life, being tempted In every way as we are but never sinned, then willingly was beaten and crucified at the hands of ungodly men for the punishment for our sin so that we could by His blood be forgiven and He rose again 3 days later to justify those who put there trust in Him and He is now sitting at the right hand of God as our High Priest and He is coming back soon! I encourage you if you dont know Him to repent (change the way you think) and put your faith in Jesus. It's by His grace, through faith in His name that we are saved! His Holy Spirit will come and make His home in you and give you a new heart and rebirth your spirit. Look to Jesus!

What can I do about being nervous all the time? I am so scared that a new thought pops up...
@alexanderewing6312

Here is how to deal with this, First any attempt to not have bad thoughts, or get rid of them are figure out what they mean will result in feeding them, and creating more bad thoughts. Second, you must accpet that it is impossible to not have random bad thoughts, and that you are not responsible for them. Third you must not care weather or not you have a bad thought, once it no longer matters, your stop having them all the time,. Forth stop trying to forcefully remove the OCD from your life, as this only feeds it, you must view the thoughts as fictional events that are not worth discussing. Fifth, you must choose to not become up set about the thoughts, and not do any wired shit to make them go away, the feeling of fear, and general discomfort are being caused by the release of high amounts of chemicals, and not the things that you are seeing, and trying to get rid of the images will not help, its the feelings you need to get rid off by ignoring them, so they go away by them selfs, the more you try and explain away the thoughts or force them out the more they will bother you, you must just ignore the entire thing.

You brought up something very important there... OCD can occur in the mind and more often than in the physical. That statement alone needs to be discussed as much as possible because a) there is a taboo on open mental health discussion in our society and b) everyone is so fixated on physical illness and almost ignores mental. I've had intrusive thoughts for 6 years and today is the day I finally find a label for them. Phychiatrists couldn't diagnose me as what I explained did not fit into schizophrenia, which are actual voices. They still gave me the medication for it which only magnified the thoughts and created a physical reaction to them. I find that they occur most when I am stressed or feeling anxious. When I take a deep breath and relax, they pass. I highly recommend getting into physical activity like fitness training, freediving, hiking, skiing... anything to move you out of your head. That and relaxation techniques like floating and self hypnosis have helped me over the years. What I do not accept is having to live with them forever because they just started one day after a traumatic event. It feels like they stem from a root cause that hasn't been dealt with. Next step for me is proper hypnotherapy to deal with it once and for all.

I think I have more than one type of OCD. Having to do things multiple times, counting to the number 21(Since last year it started) Violent thoughts, which have just randomly popped into my mind a few weeks ago. There’s more I have too. They’re scary, but I know not to act on the horrible ones. I’d never hurt anyone like I have seen in my mind. It’s scary thinking these thoughts, I always have anxiety and a sick feelings because of them. They’re stuck in my mind most of the time, but not all. Different things trigger the horrible, violent ones. It’s also images of others hurting people, or seeing someone get hurt.

June Kurobara my thoughts scold me as well. In reality, your scolding yourself. That ties into what Matt stated about “arguing the thought”. All that means is it’s not who you are. Don’t beat yourself up over the thought. Just allow it to come in and go out. Don’t give it validity.

Ella Exterkamp that's sounds like intrusive thoughts/ OCD. I have always liked girls my entire life, but one day I had a thought "what if you are pretending to like girls and your secretly gay?" And I knew it wasn't true but I started arguing with that thought and I started forgetting who I really was and the OCD was warping my perception of myself and I couldn't let it go.
