This is the third and final video in this intrusive thoughts series. In this video, I discuss two simple strategies you can use to help reduce the frequency and intensity of intrusive thoughts.
Strategy 1 - Journaling
Journaling is very helpful to get the stuff in your head out on paper. Journal can help with creating some space between you and your thoughts (a process called cognitive defusion). I highly suggest a simple journaling practice if you are struggling with intrusive thoughts.
Strategy 2 - Meditation
Meditation is very simple practice that will help enhance your moment by moment awareness. I suggest Meditation to almost all my clients -especially those who struggle with intrusive thoughts.

I speak from experience that meditation helps calm your mind. I would always have intrusive thoughts all day that would lead to depression and anxiety. But then I started meditating 10 minutes a day for a month, every day (mostly in the mornings). Then after that I started seeing some results. When I would have a thought I could easily dismiss it and it wouldn't bother me as much. I came upon this video and decided to just comment some advice that works wonders. Update: I just got to the part in the video about meditation! Lol! Meditation does help!

He said excellently- thoughts are not your reality, it is what you experience. I would like to add on a few words. Don't try control your thoughts. Just don't allow them to control you. What you believe in is your reality. Not what you think. Again it's still just your reality, so don't worry, it does not mean it's the world's reality.

My intrusive thoughts started when I was helping my friend with his problems and school stressed me out a lot and my mum struggled with a bit of anxiety and I think I do too when I was a child if there was a storm I would cry and think it would flood

So I had this for a few days. And I told myself I will go through this and get better. And I will help others who are in need of my help who went through the same thing. So this is how I'm beating it and I think you should know it too. We all know what is intrusive thoughts, it's the junk thoughts our mind gives us to look at. Sometimes it consoles us that's us too. Remember that our body, mind and soul are three different things/entity, doesn't mean it's all in one place it is the same. Try to understand this idea. Secondly, don't give a sh*t about your thoughts. If your mind gives you good thoughts, would you question them? Same here, don't question it if it's bad either. Our mind is a child that wouldn't grow and know any social norms, taboo ,evil or good. What we can do is, identify whether it suits with ourselves. Our souls. If it's bad or judgy thoughts, just leave them be and carry on with your day. This is where meditation comes in. Meditation helps to figure out our thoughts and ourselves. So my advice, don't care and carry on. Be Happy. We are the souls, we should control our materialistic body and minds. Don't give in, it may sound like it's real. Don't believe it. And another advice, no one would know your thoughts or what's happening in your head,so you shouldn't seek any validation.*Stop debating in your head why the thought came in the first place* Still, you will be recognized as a gem. Try to seek inner peace. Namaste. I would really like to help if you guys have any questions.

Hi matt, thanks a lot for ur exploration on intrusive thoughts in making clear of the subject to us. It's for real and true that daily meditation creates a much experiencing impact to disempower the intrusive thoughts and it also helps very great in keeping the mind calm the whole day. Instruive thoughts r just a viral mind like a viral fever and meditation is definitely it's daily dose of medicine for diagnosis because for physical body it's a physical exercise required to keep it fit and like wise for the mind, the mindfulness meditation is certainly required to keep it fit for sure. Meditation is the cheap and best medicine for intrusive thoughts available with all of us. I practiced eight weeks of self mindfulness meditation, the day I got intrusive thoughts from nowhere but immediately given its own taste of meditational medicine to calm down the mind. It really works. Thanks a lot Matt for ur wonderful service in educating all, cheers bro and keep going. May god bless u

You should talk about the illusion of the compulsion having to do with the some sense of false magic force that performing the compulsion as a result of an intrusive thought will magically prevent an irrational thought from becoming reality.

I am suffering the same thing. I was in a mental hospital and all they did was drug me. Support groups were helpful and just being away for a bit calm me down but getting back home is sort of a struggle yet I'm getting ready to start therapy. One thing I will say look for someone who you can trust and tell them what your thinking or write it down. My husband has been my support system since day one. I try to just memorize what he tells me and it distracts me. Its tough but not impossible we have the answer to our problems is just that we are so stuck on the disturbing thoughts. I am very stuck but I pray for a better day watching these videos or listening in the car sort of helps me.

Mindful breathing IS not focusing on your thoughts...Meta mindfulness is what you're referring to which is being aware of your thoughts. Slightly different but both are great.
