Nice tutorial Randy! When on the Invitational tour, I fished with Van Dam, and he was a fan of the “Clown” color jerkbait, for a variety of situations, especially on Champlain and 1000 Islands. The tannic stain of the Northeast was his reasoning and it paid dividends to,him for many years. Sadly, he didn’t share the use of sticky weights!!!! My personal “adjustments” for jerkbaits revolve around these sticky weights and increased my catches substantially. For me, the balance is the most important piece of the presentation, and if you can lower the head by just a few centimeters, the angle will become an irresistible offering to both large and smallmouth. So, I wrap the treble hooks with the same amount of lead so the initial presentation is straight. Then I add the “stots” or circular sticky leads along the belly with an extra one or two under the throat. This will also get the jerkbait down lower in the water column than usual, offering a presentation, where many fish do not see these lures. Great video, thanks for the share.

Just wanted to personally thank you Randy! I have been fishing the Megabass Vision 110 for the last 5 years but since I’ve tuned in to your channel with your tips I’ve increased my catches 10 fold!!! From using to heavy of line to switching to a spinning setup vs my bait caster. Also several more tips I’ve incorporated. Thanks my man!

I know exactly what you're talking about. Matching the bottom/weed growth is usually what I go for with some sort of accent/flash or off color that keeps it looking fishy or just not perfectly matching the surroundings. Sometimes it's even just matching perfectly to the point it's completely invisible except for oversized eyes that give it away. Fly tying/fishing has cemented this for me. I have quite a few flies that except for some small amount iridescent flash or giant eyes just look exactly like some fish shaped wad of weeds and they absolutely hammer bass. Something about translucent and iridescent sky blue in tanic water always seems to outfish other colors or finishes. I haven't a clue why that is.

Great tip. I think it often applies to crankbaits and other lures too. Like you often say, there are no rules in bass fishing though...when you carefully take all factors into consideration and think you have the right action, color, and depth running jerkbait and then your buddy pulls out a neon green, orange, and purple fast sinking jerkbait and catches a hog in crystal clear water.

Wow. Alot to unpack here. Prey spend their lives trying to be undetected, yet many fisherman think in terms of visibility and exposure. This video is a perfect example(one of many) of how important is to understand bite triggers. This is outstanding intellectual property. It takes my mind more to adaptability than to a wristband with scripted plays. The value of this video lives in thought process more than the content. You are contributing to the advancement of the outdoorsman. Thank you Randy

After listening to what you explained it really does make sense because we were on Rice Lake, Ontario in August and the water was clear but it had a slight tint to it. I started throwing a bomber square A and it was a "flat" color (shad color) and I was catching largemouth left and right one day. Later that week one of the guys had an original wiggle wart (metallic gold, black back) and he picked off 2 largemouth and a nice walleye in just a few casts. The difference was it was sunny and clear when I caught mine and it was overcast when he caught his and the other advantage that he had was that he grew up on that lake and knew it very well. Thanks for sharing this with us Randy! :)

In the part of NC where I live we have lots of sod grass and runoff fed water. So more often than not we have predominantly stained waters mostt of the year. I’m really concerned that the visibility factor really kills that jerk bait bite. Onyx clearest of days I’ve had two for the Vizza Bility on some of my home lakes but typically maybe 6 inches to 8 inches if I’m lucky. I’m trying to expand on my color selections and finishes and really experiment as suggested. I’m just worried that jerk baits aren’t as much of a factor in this area as they would be in other places, and with the bite slowing for winter that means I’m a bit more limited. Thanks for the video though, I really appreciate the pointers

I've watched all your jerkbait videos. Could you please make a video talking about the jerkbait colors and the sunrise/sunset lighting vs the color of the jerkbaits you use. I feel like everyone talks about cloudy vs windy vs water clarity, but no one mentions the lack of light vs full light and the color of jerkbaits. Some colors look different in the day vs the dawn, especially in the water. Thanks!

This is great insight. But how would you approach it if you can't invest a lot of money and say only can afford to stock 3 or 4 jerkbaits total. Are there general colors that will produce in a variety of water conditions. Or better yet certain conditions that will loosen up the fish to bite a jerkbait even if the color is not spot on?

Yup, most fish change colors due to light penetration. It is a natural process that helps them blend with their environment. Smallmouth can do this rapidly. Having a bait that stands out plain as day is very unnatural looking. Like you said, you need one that looks natural but just has a little accent to stand out for bass to target.
@TerryBattisti1

Randy, that lead-in video of you holding the bass with the bait in its mouth gave a HUGE clue regarding color. It was hooked on the front hook. In other words, when you have the right color, they eat the head of the bait. Is that your opinion too and can you elaborate on that in a future video if so?
