This is one of those 4K titles that I think EVERYONE should buy. The fact that Ignite Films made their physical media debut with a 4K, the smallest and most expensive format, is just incredible and we should all support it.

I saw Invaders from Mars (1953) when it was first released. It's still one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

In the early eighties Swedish television showed the 3-D version of this movie, it was a big and special thing, you got special 3-D glasses with the TV program guide. I still have the 3-D glasses from that day togheter with the VHS tape wich we recorded the show on. It blew my mind as a kid and yes it scared me but also fueled my love for monsters and horror, that movie and King Kong togheter with some Universal Horror movies is what started it all for me. This is one i for sure would love to have in my collection, it is a must. Happ to see this make it to 4K and get the special treatment.

I am so thrilled to see this review. Invaders from Mars has always been a childhood favorite of mine. Your analysis and discussion of other tiles of that period is right on target. I purchased the 4K edition. I did a comparison between the existing dvd to the 4K disc. Like you say, it is absolutely jaw dropping. Thank you for the most satisfying and loving video.

On the first national TV station in Switzerland they used to show classic movies on Sunday afternoons in the 90s. When I stayed with my grandparents and the weather was bad, they sat us in front of the tube and let us watch those movies. That was when I saw Invaders from Mars on one rainy Sunday afternoon. I was maybe seven or eight years old and it left me, let´s say, deeply impressed. The movie never quite left my mind and for years I tried to find out what it was until yesterday I started watching this retrospective analysis of the remake of the film and suddenly, what long was forgotten came back to me. I am so thankful they went to the trouble of restoring this film. My copy will be in the Mail tomorrow. So looking forward to watching it with my friends and in a couple of years with my kids ;-D

Ignite’s 4K release and restoration of INVADERS FROM MARS was quite the revelation! I’m so glad to see all the love and effort poured into this film, and I was glad to support it’s fairly steep retail price because I love this 50’s sci-fi classic. My only complaint was the damage the slipcover had due to the weird dual tape used on the top and bottom of the slip. Thanks for the review, Heath!

Hopefully future pressings avoid that tape issue, as it damaged my copy too.

Thanks for a great review and analysis of the Invaders from Mars disc. My birthday date coincides with the release of Invaders, so my first exposure was thru “Chiller Theatre” on New York’s WPIX, channel 11 in the early ‘60s. Even though it was experienced on a low-res, rabbit-eared-antenna, cathode tube television (or maybe because of it), the nightmarish images and story had an enormous impact. In spite of severe distribution challenges which had my disc arriving about 2 weeks ago (we’ll past it’s announced September release date), it is a beautiful set, which I have only just begun to dive into (beyond the feature itself). Well done, Heath!

I didn't discover this one until my early 20s but man is it definitely Top 10 Cold War Sci-Fi. I held on to the DVD for so long and I ordered early to get that sweet signed poster. It was well worth the wait because it truly is a beautiful restoration jam packed with goodies. Thanks for the review Heath!

Again, this is another great review of this classic movie. It seems that no one will mention the terrible use of tape over the slipcover. I was able to use a hairdryer and peel it off without causing damage. However, every video I’ve seen that reviews this Blu-ray has damage to the slipcover due to the tape, I’ve never seen this on any other Blu-ray with a slipcover.

Good note! I wasn't sure if that was a widespread issue or was a limited experience. I'm glad you were able to get yours off without damage.

It is also one of the few films told from a child's perspective. William Cameron Menzies the director also designed the film ( Menzies designed a number of great films). The camera and set design perspectives are meant to look how a child might see them. Outstanding and very difficult restoration worthy of the higher price.

An excellent review, I couldn't agree more the 1953 'Invaders from Mars' is a classic. Off to order the 4K now. Update ... Ignite only ship to USA and Canada so, as a UK resident, will have to order from a reseller.

I wasn't even finished watching your review on Monday and I was online ordering this movie. It arrived today (3 days!) in perfect condition. Great nostalgic movie! It's an uncredited location, but the stock footage of the tanks being loaded up on flatbed railroad cars is of the 1st Armored Division, on the Old Railhead Drive, Fort Hood, TX, which is still in use.

To continue the conversation: As a first generation monster kid, this one definitely freaked me out growing up. Along with the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it tapped into primal fears of abandonment, i.e., what if the central figures in your life-your parents-weren’t who you thought they were? Because of the high price tag, I’ll probably hold on to my Image DVD copy for now, which is somehow going for about $60 on Amazon.

Saw this in the theater when I was a kid on one of it's re- releases but have not seen it since until now so in many respects its like watching it for the first time since there is a lot I didnt understand when I was 8! For such a low budget film it looks fantastic. Kudos to you for mentioning Man From Planet X and Five Fingers brings back memories. One of the reasons why I enjoy your channel.

Excellent review! Fell in love with this as a kid, will have to pick this up. Saw it on a Saturday afternoon with "The Window", an excellent suspense thriller with Bobby Driscoll. Didn't think much of the Tobe Hooper remake. Just couldn't connect with it. Funny how the original (or my memory) overshadowed it. You mentioned "The 5000 Fingers Of Dr T", a movie that creeped me more than any horror movie - tho I guess it was because it gave me nightmares.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Жыл бұрын
In the special features, Joe Dante says "I can't think of a more misguided remake" when talking about the Tobe Hooper version. I know 80s kids love that movie, but it doesn't even begin to touch the original, IMO. 5000 Fingers is scary because it's so detached from anything resembling reality. I saw it on TCM or AMC back in the early 1990s and it really blew me away because it's just so strange!

Such a great review of a movie that came out when I was only four. In later years I really came to appreciate this film on so many levels. If we had known anyone who had sand pits on their property, I wasn't going there !! And that haunting choral score....yikes !

I'm in my mid-sixties and as a kid who loved 50's-60's science fiction movies, I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. I was truly excited when I discovered that it was receiving a 4K restoration from a team that loved the movie and immediately preordered. As mentioned by others the physical packaging with the tape on the slipcover was a disappointment and hopefully ignite films improves on this in the future.

Thank you so much for the review! I really want to blind buy this but $55 is pretty high. I probably cave eventually. Maybe I can rent the 4K disc in the meantime. I love these kind of movies.
@CerealAtMidnight

It's definitely a bit more than most 4K discs. I think the cost of the restoration and the distribution is factored into the retail price. I got to talk to Bill Lustig from Blue Underground last year and he was pretty forthcoming about how expensive 4K restorations are for small, independent distributors, so that's why we often see a higher price on those.

I agree, that price is high. Even the blu ray is $45. I usually don't balk at paying a little more because these boutique labels are supplying us with genre films that we've waited for, and they're only able to produce and sell a limited number of discs. But $45 or $55 has me on the fence. I'll probably also cave, but I'll wait a while.
