Really good. Intelligently written. Great narration. Story line could've been extended however, evolving into an adventure, epic in scope, instead of ending abruptly as it did.

@Dimitri Vincheov yeah dumb ass and *I* was saying it had potential to be an excellent long story more sweeping in scope...

Keep in mind these were written before women and blacks could vote, you hear some odd things.

Reminds me of John Wyndham's short story 'Meteor', from a couple of years earlier.

Interesting, unfortunately I ended up finding the image used more interesting. Anyone know what it is and by whom?

@JETJOOBOY sorry about that, I initially ignored your comment for that reason but after reading fuzzywzhe's so very "gracious" reply to me I was in no mood to check again so when I scrolled up to get his user name and saw you reply I didn't bother checking to see if it was meant for me or not. The sarcasm at the end should have been a hint though.

@fuzzywzhe "He doesn't even *care* about the image I spent 5 minutes looking up, he just wanted to bitch and complain." Why would I? it's been a month. I either would have had the curiosity of looking for it myself or had already forgotten about it - guess which one happened? You didn't check the original date, you replied in an aggressive manner and after spending a paragraph insulting me you expected me to show gratitude for you having answered an inconsequential question I had already forgotten I ever posed... IF you had replied a month ago I *might* have been somewhat grateful; if you hadn't spent a paragraph insulting me I *might* have been somewhat grateful; If you hadn't derided me for not caring enough to search for the image and just provided the data you did I *might* have been grateful. But you didn't do any of those things and whatever gratefulness I might have had towards you in any other circumstance will not materialize now or anytime in the near future. I don't know where you work and I don't care. I don't know if you work in image recognition and even if you did I don't care. I don't know if you were told by a doctor that what you do is utterly inconsequential and I don't care how that might have made you feel. I don't know if you work for Facebook or some other piece of shit tech corporation that makes you feel like shit and I don't care. I do care about the fact you seem to think I actually cared about the source of the image. My comment was more or less a rhetorical question. The comment was: Interesting, *unfortunately* *I* *ended* *up* *finding* *the* *image* *used* *more* *interesting*. Anyone know what it is and by whom? That whole comment was my attempt at finding something good in the mediocrity that was this particular upload. The story was decent , the narration was fine and the image scan was slightly above decent and was unfortunately the best part of this upload. Unfortunately even the image isn't interesting enough to be memorable. There, that's how I feel about this with no pseudo-rhetorical questions attached. Do you comprehend the original comment and the spirit of the original question now?

Not a bad story but listeners will guess the ending before the end. The same general plot was used in various guises over the years.

That the ending would be a twist ending was telegraphed almost from the beginning of the story, because the story didn't establish that the fleet came from Earth, and their destination was the third planet of a sun system. I didn't know which of the possible twists it would be until the survivors were attacked by a much larger creature. As it turned out, the twist was similar to the Twilight Zone episode in which tiny American astronauts were driven off by a giant native. The plot hole was the destruction of the spaceship by a meteor swarm after its defense shield was turned off, even though we were told the chance of being hit by a meteor was negligible. If the meteor swarm was actually undetected artificial satellites, their non-detection and "swarminess" wasn't explained. And why not place the instruments outside the defense shield and keep the shield on, to make the chance of a meteor strike zero?
