I like the giant foam spraying lathe thing, never seen that before. The carbon fiber SRBs were designed to provide extra performance during polar orbit missions, but they were never actually used

@MustardChannel, is this where you got the idea for your name? That multi-vehicle orbiter?

I read many years ago that the 'Sputnik' was not actually visible from the ground. As it was a medicine ball size satellite I find this believable. What I read was that the booster followed it in orbit and said booster had areas covered in prisms on it to sparkle as it rotated in orbit. Ever heard that one?

Why was Australia asscociated closely with USA, not USSR?

Because Australia was not communist

All these stories give a distorted perception of the true story : long going big budget projects , that required a lot of technologies to be developed and tested were in progress . USA as soviets had their programmes with different approaches and different timing . Launching a man to the space was used by soviets for propaganda purposes, but never mentioned that they were so in a rush that have not finished developing the landing procedure and Gagarin ejected from the module and landed apart from the module . Americans did not know that this was a race and as found out, they put a goal , that soviet technologies and economy could not manage to cope with . Moon program . To understand the status of the soviets space program just check what are launchers russia is using nowadays and you’ll get a better picture

The USA was also deep into propaganda, don't make it sound like they were only in it for altruistic and benevolent reasons, because it's simply not true. The whole "space race" was a way of competing without turning to outright war, and it brought humanity some incredible advancements and technologies both from the USSR and from the USA.
