Thanks to you Jon I'm licence free now for three years and have saved £500 so far. I only watch YT and had thought I needed a licence to watch that on my big screen. Following your educational videos I've realised the error of my ways and cancelled the licence. For months and months they've sent letter after letter which I ignored. They haven't sent one now for about 6 months. It's become a point of principle to me. The BBC has harboured some horrific people in its corridors, some of whom have been convicted of crimes against children. I'd sooner go to prison than fund a nonce factory.

Six to eight months seem to be the norm before the harrassing letters start their cycle again with progressively more threatening letters. Then it stops for the 6-8 months and starts again.

The only time I ever got a knock on the door was when I actually had a licence. The trick he used to try and get in was to say "wouldn't you prefer to discuss this inside and keep this discussion private from your neighbours". I declined, he went away, a while later I canceled it and I haven't had a visit since.

I got one of those letters. I'm over 75, on pension credit so could have a free licence. However, the last time I watched TV was over 15 years ago when I had a TV but I no longer have a TV set since 15 years, I'm not bothered, they can keep wasting their time sending me threatening letters.

I'm an Australian and this just blows my brain.. I watch all my sport in Australia on streaming services like Foxtel and Kayo which i pay for, but under your TV Licence not only would i need to pay for these services but i would even have to pay for a licence even if i didn't watch normal broadcast tv.. that is just madness to me.

I believe the ABC is funded partially by the government to about a billion dollars per year and the rest comes from other commercial ventures. That’s still a lot less than the almost $4 billion the BBC makes through TV Licensing.

It goes in circles with the threats from a warning to opening an investigation, to giving you til a certain date to get licensed, then it starts all over again, proving their threats are useless. @ I think your autocorrect may have changed a couple of words in your reply there. Yes it's addressed to the Legal Occupier or whatever, however, I'm positive a court wouldn't take kindly to anyone receiving letters like that even if it's not addressed to their name. It is being sent to that address and they are obviously trying to get a certain person so that is harassment. They're not going to get anyone else at that address so I don't think they'd win that argument. Best that would happen for them is if a court decided as it wasn't addressed directly to a named individual then they would tell them to stop sending letters to the address completely. If that happened that would actually probably be a good thing as it would mark a precedent case which could then be used by everyone else to stop the letters.

My late parents were "investigated", about 1 year after they died... I'd ignored 6 letters while I was doing the probate and emptying the house. The Capita salesperson had put a card through the letterbox - handwritten date, time and initials of the visitor. I binned it and the letters went back to the usual ones. The card was DL sized with Enforcement Notice in huge red letters. Bunch of wasters 😂

I remember years ago I worked in a TV/HiFi store and our script was to tell people if you had a device capable of receiving live broadcasts then you needed a license. It was obviously a lie. As the apathetic worker drone that I was back then, I didn't know any better, nor did I care.

I've done the online declaration the past couple of times. This afternoon I got an email asking me to renew my declaration and its only just over 6 months since I submitted it and they sent an email to confirm it (kept the emails obviously). Seems the two year thing no longer applies so I won't bother ever again and will cease and blank any further communications from them. Doing the right thing doesn't work, they obviously interpret politeness as weakness.

I have read the comments attached to this latest post from Jon, I'm very amused to hear what people use the letters for. I recommend returning the letters (unopened) to Capita. The return postage address is printed in very small print on the reverse of the envelope. I have in the past returned their letters from my various foreign holiday destinations which gives me enormous satisfaction 😂 although I am unsure whether Capita is liable for the cost of their returned post. Perhaps someone could advise?

I receive a letter every single month asking me if I’ll be home on “Such and such a date?”.. I don’t need a TV Licence, if I did- I’d buy one. I put every one of these letters in a drawer, as far as I’m concerned they’re evidence, evidence of harassment, bullying and abuse. After serving my country in several conflicts I am sadly now suffering from PTSD, anxiety and depression. Every time I get one of these stupid, unsolicited letters my anxiety grows to a level where I feel like I can’t breathe. The BBC are slowly destroying my health and I wish they would stop

My friend is 80 and struggling financially so cancelled her tv licence online. I filled out the form with her. A month later she has had letters that scared her so called them to buy a new licence, even though she doesn't need one. On the phone they told her that she would have to pay double payments for 6 months. She said no she couldn't afford it. Now she is being harassed again. 🤬

Had my 1st letter a couple of years ago with ... "A gentle reminder" to "The Occupant" from there has been regular investigations and people will call down at any time night or day. Then it was "Will you be home on Thursday" ? followed by numerous threats of "We will now officially investigate" and "Last chance" and finally before Christmas this year I got " We will give you a 10 day window to respond" .. 10 days has long since passed. Nothing yet. Yes it is harassment, but no response is more of a thorn in their side. Pressuring me to purchase something I don't need or want. I am not obligated to reply to hard sales tactics. I am waiting now for a > "Your 10 days is up " !

The last letter I got came in a bright red envelope and the letter had a bright red band round the edge, very colourful. They've reached the final stage of this investigation apparently and I think I'm supposed to quake in my boots, but it gave me a giggle instead as they still don't have my name. I took the chance of letting them in (I had the letter of "under investigation ")because i knew i didn't need a license. They came in, inspected my 5 TVs and games consoles for apps. They then told me i don't need a license. I've declared no change when sent the letter. Not had a visit in 8 yrs. Just thought I'd let you know my experience. Keep up the good work. Back in the 70's & 80's TV Licensing used to intimidate the public with detector vans, I was a Special Constable then & was on the beat one night with a regular bobby, we walked past one of these vans & he noticed that the tax disc had expired. In a flash whipped out a ticket & announced 'Bastards that's a blow for the common man' & did a Citizen Smith Power to the people salute!

They're allowed to harass you if it's for 'the purposes of preventing or detecting crime' - the "crime" being TVL evasion in this case. So if "evasion" were decriminalised, they wouldn't be able to send these threatening letters anymore.

May I add Mr Chilli that I too live in a high-rise block of council owned flats and we are told never to let anyone into the block unless you personally invite them in. Signs in the foyer warn strangers they are not allowed in the block unless invited so if they do manage to get to my front door I can have them removed from the building without leaving my easy chair. I've been ignoring these for decades. I used to file them for a laugh, but when I had two ring binders absolutely creaking under the weight I shredded them all and used at the bottom of a bin liner to absorb any leakage from old cabbage, potato peelings etc I was throwing away. {:o:O:}
