Finally. Now go after the car companies for selling it in the first place.
@_PatrickO12 күн бұрын
The FTC under Lina Kahn went after GM for it. Just today there was an update in the news about their case against GM. GM and onstar will be banned for five years from disclosing geolocation and driver behavior data to consumer reporting agencies. They must also provide greater transparency and choice to consumers over the data they do collect. The FTC is planning to sue more car companies, unless trump's FTC chair pick puts a stop to these lawsuits. Another 4 years of Lina Kahn would have been amazing. The speed at which the FTC was bringing cases was accelerating and the FTC was getting wins. If we want more than what the FTC is getting, we got to vote for a better congress. Only congress can do more. It will suck if they "reduce" government by cutting things like the FTC. Having the FTC bring no cases would allow companies to violate all our rights.

It's not only car companies though. Some insurance companies while testing their own "car safe driving device" offered discounted rates to consumers that beta tested these devices. But over time these consumers eventually faced worse rates and eventually dropped from what I remember reading. So, while I agree, it's everyone imo

It's just apps, whether they run in your car or on your phone. It's pretty valuable to insurance companies so I expect they will get better at prying it out of brokers and take the slaps on the wrist as a lot less expensive than not getting it.
@funkingitup180512 күн бұрын
The car companies that own these data collecting and consumer infringing patents badly want to license it to every vehicle sold. There are already plans to equip all new cars with "kill switches" for "police", passive alcohol detection devices that will disable the car and possibly notify law enforcement, cameras facing the driver, etc. Since 2014, all cars are already required to have event recorders that can be used against you. I wish it was all a conspiracy theory, but do a Google search and see what is being proposed.

And they proceeded to tell me who they were sharing it with, which included Liberty Mutual, which oddly enough happened to be sending me letters in the mail trying to get me to get a policy with them, which I thought was strange because I think they're like one of the scummiest insurance companies out there, so I would never go that route. And I really could not figure out for the life of me why they were approaching me from what seemed like out of nowhere. Terrible business practices going on rampantly out there it seems like every which way you look anymore. It's really sad and pathetic. Corporate greed is a real mutherfucl

Part of the reason(s) I drive a 2006 car and use almost no apps on my phone, which I also barely use and don't even keep my location settings on, ever. I don't use my phone for maps or GPS, I don't make online purchases that use a 3rd party payment processor or even use any payment apps. I have NO financial or banking apps or info on my phone. I digress. it's easier to manage life without these things if you just never conform to it in the first place. it gets more challenging every day and I just keep doubling-down on my resistance and rebellion.
@KratostheThird12 күн бұрын
@@SandySez This is exactly what I mean. Even something that should be straightforward, like gym memberships, requires smartphones and for you to download an app. They took away clipboards, paper and being able to physically sign. So the smartphone is now a scanner, and they make you do a bunch of garbage that simply didn’t exist 20 years ago. It was much easier to sign a paper, give the person up front your physical cash, and just work out for the day.
@johnnybaggins77712 күн бұрын
@@SandySez I agree with what you say, Sandy. But I think living in the digital age, we don't necessarily have to live under a rock so to speak, to protect ourselves. We could still take steps to protect our privacy in the current age we live in although it can come as an inconvenience when we're taking part in this technological reality we currently live in. Another very helpful KZbinr that I like to follow is a Naomi Brockwell from Australia who delves in deep to try to help people sort out things in their life that might be hurting their privacy and such as opposed to helping them. People are so willing to use tools to make their lives easier, all the while unaware that these tools are actually exposing their personal information as per the terms they agreed to when they downloaded it. And people wonder why Identity theft is so rampant in the world. I remember a wise person once said that if something is free, then you are actually the product. This applies especially to all these wonderful social media apps that everybody is quite fond of nowadays.

@@johnnybaggins777 So true! I think I've watched Naomi a time or 2, but I'll go check out her channel, thank you. There are advantages to some of it and I try to utilize those to my benefit, but just keep it to a minimum instead of embracing it all haphazardly. And YES, you are so correct @ (many) people just jumping on every new app or program without thinking twice about the potential security risk or credibility of the company (&/or parent company) behind it. I mean some of us are still alive who got excited waiting 2 or 3 weeks for our Sears & Roebuck catalog order (which we mailed in) to arrive, and we were perfectly happy to have our entire legal name, address & phone # listed in the local, public phone book & Directory Assistance Operator by dialing '0' because NO ONE cared and NO ONE was profiting from it but the phone co who we happily paid as a voluntary customer. Things that aren't core services of a product should be opt in, not opt out. If you buy a car, all data from driving the car should require you to explicitly opt in for anyone to collect it. If you buy an app any data beyond that required to use the product, i.e. the data you input manually, should require an explicit opt in giving permission to collect more than the bare minimum. Access to the services you pay for, either directly or indirectly through advertisements, should not prevent you from using that product if you choose not to opt in to having your data mined. In fact the 4th amendment of the constitution implicitly protects individuals from opt out data collection, it just hasn't been tested in the judicial system yet.

We just lost our 17 yr old tuxedo cat named Nana, and she was very similar in mannerisms and love like yours. She also had major mobility issues at the end, but we are grateful we got to spend Thanksgiving with her and she ate lots of food to her heart's content. I know you're doing very important work for the world, but please continue to spend lots of time with Clinty!

I installed new pads and rotors on someone's vehicle the other day. To complete the procedure requires a test drive to burnish in the pads to the rotors and then allow them to cool. It requires multiple hard braking events followed by multiple moderate braking events. The car kept beeping at me during this, and I finally realized they had a device plugged into their ODB port. Whoops!

... btw, here's a copy of my curmudgeon old lady response I left under someone else's comment here, right before I saw you. .... "Part of the reason(s) I drive a 2006 car and use almost no apps on my phone, which I also barely use and don't even keep my location settings on, ever. I don't use my phone for maps or GPS, I don't make online purchases that use a 3rd party payment processor or even use any payment apps. I have NO financial or banking apps or info on my phone. I digress. it's easier to manage life without these things if you just never conform to it in the first place. it gets more challenging every day and I just keep doubling-down on my resistance and rebellion."

I had a similar app in the UK and when cutting the grass I would get alerts from the Prudential saying I was driving extremely slowly as my ride on mower has a top speed of 4mph. 6 hours of 3-4mph was more than enough to set off the app as they assumed I was driving in a very large circle, I assumed they only tracked my driving when I was in the car where their small box was!!! I cancelled my insurance, destroyed their box and deleted the app....

Luckily, I never installed Gasbuddy. But I DID use the website on my pc once. Back when Hurricane Milton came through, and everyone was desperate to find a working gas station. It came in handy. I could say to the fam, "the 7 11 over on such and such street has gas and electricity, so let's plan a trip there". My browser is heavily protected from spying, scripts, ads, and such.

Hopefully it will still work if you don't connect it. My new HVAC wanted to connect, but I refused. It still cools just fine. The installation folks were puzzled and argued with me when I told them No. They told me I wouldn't get software updates. Like why would I want a software update? It should work as good as the day I bought it, so why risk giving me new software. I won the argument, and to this day, it's not connected.

@@cherryjuice9946 people seems to have this odd fetish for updates, phones especially. i dont understand it. every update i do seems to break something. wether it changes my settings without notice or completely breaks a driver. windows especially is an offensive abomination and if i could make it never update again i would. Just a reminder, on any modern Android version, adjust the permissions of any app that uses location data to only allow using it when the app is active (no background use). It doesn't prevent everything, but substantially limits the potential harm.

What about a rental agency which was not actively looking for replacement tenants as agreed upon. The availability of the rental units shifted depending on the person. Namely whene original tenant me called to receive updates the unit was on the market and active as a listing but when a potential tenant reached out (a friend) the unit was rented yet as the States law states I needed to pay for the rental during the period and while not living in it. The rental was never put on their web page and no rental lawyer in the nearby counties would hear my case. I lost every ounce of faith America the year this happened to me.

It should be easy because it's only wireless stuff. Then I would require opt out buttons. I thought you named it CAT because it spells cat, as in Clinton the beautiful kitty. I wish more places had your standards! WE LOVE CLINTON 💖

With how pervasive this shit ins in the modern world is it any surprise some of us just automatically shun a lot of tech? It is easier to simply not buy the new stuff than it is to opt out of the 17 different dataminers that come attached to every last device we buy. I'm good. Stick to my 54 year old truck, my 40 year old washing machine, 30 year old fridge, etc. It's impossible to avoid ALL of it, but I will avoid as much as I practically can, and the easiest way to do so is to simply avoid the tech containing it in the first place. No Internet of Things for me, no 'smart' devices. If eing a bit of a luddite is what it takes to protect my privacy in any capacity, then I'll wear the badge with pride.

i commented this somewhere else on youtube. Many privacy policies have a clause that's essentially "you agree to us sharing your data with 3rd party advertisers, and as a result of this agreement, you also agree to that 3rd party advertiser's privacy policies. to see their privacy policies, visit their website". and then that company's privacy policies has the same clause. so it turns into this invite loop of privacy policies that you supposedly lock yourself into by just agreeing to one of them.
