San Francisco Homeless Man Was Studying to Be Chiropractor Before Getting Evicted

Vincent has lived homeless on the streets of San Francisco since 2017. He got in a fight with his landlord and lost the place where he was living. Vincent says when he first became homeless in the Tenderloin, he didn't give it the attention it deserved to get back into housing. Vincent says he didn't realize the streets: "sucked you in and kept you there. It's like crabs in a bucket trying to get out of the streets."
Prior to homelessness, Vicent was two quarters away from receiving a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in California. Now he's fighting for survival just trying to keep his head above water.
Vincent says social services have been great. He says the biggest challenge is other homeless people. Live on the streets is hard so everyone is in survival mode! Many are just looking out for themselves. They have to.
Vincent has tried to keep working but people keep stealing his stuff. He says four times people walked off with his phone!
Vincent does delivery work or whatever he can to survive. When I mentioned those jobs don't pay enough to cover the cost of an apartment, Vincent responded he is not even thinking about rent. The affordable housing crisis has hit San Francisco hard. Unless you make a lot of money, you cannot afford a place to live here.
When I asked Vincent for his three wishes, he got emotional. This is now the second time this has happened out of almost 800 interviews. I asked Vincent if it was the question or just being interviewed. He responded that it's maybe a combination. When he thought of his son, that was the trigger, not the question. As I stated the last time this happened, I work on being more sensitive and I may not end with the three wishes question. Obviously, I may not have read this situation. But any question about his family would be a trigger.
Vincent seems like a great guy. He's intelligent and he knows how to hustle. I hope he gets off the streets soon. Homelessness has a way of changing people who are on the streets for too long. We need to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place and if a person falls into homelessness, we need to get them off the streets as quickly as possible!

I hired a guy that was homeless, and also addicted. He ended up working for me for a while, he saved up money. His son ended up dying shortly after.. He moved to San Francisco to bury the body.. However, he kept pushing through and ended up working for FedEx driving a truck for decent money. He ended up getting his own apartment and called me back a year later to update me. Hope you’re doing good John.

I was homeless in San Francisco in 2009. And everything he says is true and accurate. My escape was a family member paying all my costs to not be homeless. It cost $7500. That's essentially the only answer: MONEY! Otherwise it's like swimming your way out of a fish bowl every single day. There is no end. And survival is exhausting! If you've never experienced it, you simply cannot imagine it.

An ex wife and her attorney can make you fight them in court and try to make you miss your child’s childhood in its entirety via the court system. I don’t have a single negative strike against me - and with over $50k spent, I still have not seen my son in over 4 years. My ex is in contempt, but nobody cares, and the courts won’t ever hold the mother in contempt.

I emailed Vincent three times asking him if he wants the information public. He has not responded. If/when he responds if that is what he wants, I will post it. It would not be responsible for us to post a fundraising link on each video. If it's safe for the person to receive a large amount of money and the person wants a fundraising link included, and THEY SET IT UP THEMSELVES SO ALL MONEY GOES DIRECTLY TO THEM then we add a link. But here's the thing - unless a homeless person has a regular income to pay rent they remain homeless. A GoFundMe link will not end a homeless person's houselessness situation. It will make you all feel good, and there is nothing wrong with that. But we need to end homelessness and get people off the streets! There are hundreds of Vincents and Marys and Jims and Pauls where you live all needing help. My suggestion is that if this video motivates you to take action that you go find someplace in your local community that's having an impact in ending homelessness and start helping them. Homelessness is growing. We need to fix the affordable housing crisis. We need to stop racism and racist policies that keep people down. We need to fix foster care and prisons. We need to fix a lot of things! It all started with you!

Correct me if im wrong, ive only ever seen one fundraiser. For this person, one fundraiser could be all the boost he needs. Homeless will never be fixed because it's supposed to scare people to keep working. You provide a servjce by intervewing these people so we can get a sense of who to trust, but you've only had one fundraiser for others, but many for yourself. I wouldnt have a problem with that if you had more funds go to individuals.

Amen to that. It's quite the shock to the system. My family didn't help me out - thrown out on the streets because of a corporate raider who put thousands out of work. With a child no less. It's easy to become bitter and misanthropic. It's been over 20 years now (I eventually found work) but I'll never forget nor forgive those who could of helped us but choose not to. As much as I agree your idea is logical and great and helpful, it is just unrealistic for homeless people. Take the guy in this video as an example, he got his phone stole four times, he definitely doesn't have a laptop to check his emails, and in another video, the video maker mentioned that this account only has one person running around to interview people and himself had to work other jobs to support his video making. I know it sucks but this is just the reality. The only chance for homeless people is the government.

I've been homeless a few times. Sometimes with a job, and once without. My way to have a 'residence' or 'address' was to save a little cash and get a mailbox at a private shipping/mail center. I use the address of the mail center as my personal address, and my 'apartment number' was the box number. When I had a job, i got a membership at the cheapest nearby gym with showers to stay hygienic and presentable at work. I found out when groceries and hot food were being dumped or given out, and ate that when I couldn't afford much food. I then worked hard to get off the streets... It's not easy, but hope this helps. I'm glad I never lost hope.

In many ways it's much harder for people who were doing well previously, living a more middle class life style and never struggling for things. Kids from that category can find it hard if they all of a sudden can no longer get the things they previously only had to ask for. They can be resentful when they're young, but hopefully his son is old enough to realise his father is going through a bad time and will get himself out of it.

It's one thing coming from a poor background and then finding yourself homeless, but it's much more harder for someone who led a more middle class life, never having to go without and with greater expectations of their future. Gypsy Girl Doing an interview isn’t humiliating imo, this man seems really respectable. And if he’s interviewing multiple people a day there’s only so much he can afford to give in the first place. Either way he usually does give stuff anyway, it just isn’t filmed. Like for example the dude being interviewed brings up socks the interviewer gave him but the interviewer doesn’t video him giving the socks, the only way we even know it happened is because the dude being interviewed happened to bring it up. I feel that! I’m a chiropractor. I was 4 years out of a divorce at 55 and started over. I lived in my office for 3 years. I parked 2 blocks away and walked to my office. The only way out was to accumulate more debt. I worked nights at assisted living homes and had office hours starting at noon. I was gifted out of that situation. One patient that I took care of passed away with cancer and I took care of his elderly widowed wife. They had no children. We became best friends. It’s been 3 years and she’s gradually becoming demented. But she paid off my debt and put my name on her 600,000 estate. I love her. I feed her, hug her, take her places, sleep with her, cut her hair, toe nails, finger nails. I take GOOD care of her. Her husband of 42 years died 3years ago this month. The last few months I built a small office in our house and closed the down town office. Now I’m with her 24 hours. But as I look back I never screwed over anyone. I signed over everything and walked away from my marriage. I have always been aware and grateful that a higher power, GOD has guided and kept me alive. “Thank you GOD”

carl taylor I was homeless once. It was terrifying. And it was only for a short period of time. It was circumstantial, I lost family (through death) and the home wasn’t mine. I had a car (Miata) but very small to sleep in...my heart changed, my perspective changed. I had no mental illness, no drugs, nothing. I was in mourning, however. So I got jobs 6-7 that year. Kept breaking down crying so had difficulty keeping the jobs. Always minimum wages and never enough to secure housing. When I finally DID get subsidized housing there was no furniture, no plates, utensils, anything. I had no phone. It was more struggles and I was already older. I’m sure there are other caregivers who take care of loved ones but are then left out in the cold. There but for the grace o& God, go I. The shame, the guilt, the judgements of others that we are bad news. I have a good college education, national sales manager, public speaker, etc..but nothing counts if you’re in the streets. And I’m a white woman...don’t think I’m singular, please. It’s a humanitarian problem, a greed problem (who lives on minimum wage with a 40 hour workweek ? No one. They ALL have more jobs, no life or live with others). Deplorable that the richest country in the world has this large amount of homeless, helpless forgotten group. And the mentally Ill ...soldiers AND civilians who’ve PTSD ...and other horrible lives that need attention ...support mental health with votes. Most (if not all) states spend little on mental health and education. Pathetic values.

How did he pay for Chiropractic school (taking out loans, qualifying for grants/scholarships)? Do the same thing in Alabama...I would guess they have Chiropractic schools down there too. That way he could still keep his head up in Alabama going to Chiropractic school and working basic jobs for income. This is all too real to me and I have been there several times. I was on the streets with my dad several times when I was a kid. Now I'm 30 and have two kids and a wife. I bought a house and a minivan. I bull shited my way into several job over the last 10 years and basically faked it until I made it. I'm so scared of being back on the streets and not knowing where my food is coming from or where I'm going to sleep that I work myself to death everyday to make sure my family is comfortable and never has to live like I did. Seriously, it keeps me up at night sometimes.

My wife is a Chiro in CA and I can tell you this is not uncommon. Our school loans are around $250,000 and the interest is high. The schools tell you if you try and work while attending, you WILL fail, so take the extended loans for housing/food allowance, etc. Some of the other students had loans going upwards of $500,000 (my wife's was lower because I worked the whole time). The worst part, now she's out of school and is NOWHERE near to making enough money to warrant the money we invested in loans. Sadly though, even if you get as far as this guy does, you will have more loans that you will EVER be able to pay back, especially if you don't graduate. The whole post education system needs a revamp, from lending to how these schools charge and operate.

The Scottish Government have been kinder to their welfare recipients than in England, so its good to hear that your town is unaffected by homelessness. I live in a semi rural village near a small town in North Staffordshire. There were always a few homeless people in our town, but the effects of Universal Credit have seen the numbers drastically increase, and for the first time in my 56 years I saw a homeless man with a trolley walking on the route that is between 2 villages, which just doesn't happen around here, unheard of. The homeless are being herded away from the town at present, so goodness knows what they will do. I'm chronically ill, so I cant help. It really pains me to see such suffering, and also how little governments and society as a whole care.

I totally agree with what Vincent said about car homeless not being homeless at all, especially for the reason he gave of other people not even knowing you're homeless, but also because of the comfort, safety, access to jobs, storage, and other conveniences as well. Your car becomes your oasis or solace. Then when it gets towed, you *really* see how good you had it. I finally was able to buy another car exactly one month ago.

We could use the power of the people, if the government won't help its own citizens, we must stand up together and help these poor people out.
