Jennifer lives in a tent in the San Fernando Valley, an urbanized area of Los Angeles County. She is one of many homeless people being displaced with no place to go on a daily basis in Los Angeles and other communities criminalizing homelessness.
Jennifer shatters all the stereotypes surrounding homelessness. She is sober and does not use drugs. Jennifer is a single mom. She worked two jobs. Jennifer lost both jobs within three months while rent kept going up and up.
Jennifer tries to stay positive. She says every day is good. If the weather is too hot, Jennifer sleeps during the day and then works around her camp at night. She says it's important to keep her area clean just like you would an apartment. It's just a lot harder with you're homeless, and everything is dirt. Many homeless people stay up at night for safety reasons too.
Jennifer is politically active working to get other homeless people to vote. With close to 60,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County, collectively that's a very powerful voice. Because homeless people are focused on daily survival, voting or being politically active takes a back seat. To be honest, many homeless people feel powerless. Even service providers rarely listen to homeless people so many homeless feel what's the point of voting.
This is where you can help. Invisible People wrote a post about helping to register homeless people to vote here invisiblepeopl... and equally important, we need you to speak up for homeless people by contacting your state and federal legislators demanding they work to end homelessness in your community invisiblepeopl...
This is the eviction notice posted around the Sepulveda Basin area where Jennifer and several hundred homeless people live. They have nowhere else to go. This criminalization of homelessness and displacement of homeless people is not just cruel, it does nothing to help end homelessness and is a waste of taxpayer money • Post .

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Invisible People it’s a war of super rich vs poor. Disabled people or low income are flat out denied housing because their income isn’t 3x the monthly rent. Since the recession the scam was kicked into overdrive. Land was bought up, apartments repainted and rent was tripled, these crooked landlords even take to harassing tenants out, then raise the rent on the next.

@@wordsunheard2383 I agree. I don't think it will help to complain about removing homeless people from a basin either. They consider it unsightly, and if it is a rich area, that is a no no. I find it so eerie that in wealthy areas, the homeless have vanished. I don't know where they are going, but I heard that some burger samples have tested postive for human DNA.

Thank you Amanda...i agree with you except I feel that Greed has always been a major problem but not just here in America...everywhere, which kinda goes hand in hand with Lack of Compassion. I don't see greed of lack of compassion as a cause. I see lack of pre-planning. I was an Art Director for a printing plate company for 10 years. However, at 31, I realized at I couldn't retire on Social Security so I made a career change to a job with a pension and health care. I joined Law Enforcement and bought a house. I worked all the overtime I could get so I could pay off my house before retirement. Now I've been retired for the past 12 years with a house that has long been paid off. My pension covers all my expenses and my SS goes into the Bank.

Most people who find themselves homeless, have no clue usually, how hard it is to escape that situation. It's mainly because rents are too high, and too few. We have a permanent housing shortage in America!

I would be homeless, too. But, lucky for me I bought a condo back in 1984, my rent from my last apartment was the same amount as my condo mortgage $450 back then. However, it was a fix loan, which means that $450 will not increase for the next 30 years.. Now, I'm getting cards & letters from investors to buy my unit since it's been paid off 10 years ago(paid it off early). I can't & won't sell, cause I can't afford to pay rent in today's market.

When I was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1982 My payroll paperwork got lost in the black hole called the DOD. So there I was I had my clothes and $500.00 in the bank I was a grown "man" I wasn't depend on anyone but myself. 38 days later the money ran out the $2,500 the Navy owed me was still in limbo. for 3 weeks I lived under a bridge I worked at a car wash after the first week my boss asked me if I wanted more hours and I could open and close the carwash it was huge it had a restaurant a barber and gift shop. I slept behind the soap and wax barrels. When your homeless and on the streets you don't get true deep restful sleep because your vulnerable and it can feel unsafe at times. 3 weeks after working I got my back pay rented small 1 bedroom apt. I can't tell you how good I slept in that tiny apt. because it was clean and safe. So if you see a homeless person and they look tired and wore out! they are from lack of a clean safe place to sleep.

I understand what you said about why the homeless appear to look tired and wore out, that is pure reality. The other reality of your statement is that, even when you were down, you did what you had to do....you worked hard and sacrificed your free time to better yourself and your situation. YOU pulled yourself out of the hole you were in...nobody else. You should be proud of your accomplishments. The experience lead you to a deeper understanding of the chaos of life but also the immense power of self to change what you find unacceptable.

"American History X" is a true masterpiece of modern film making. Edward Norton and Edward Furlong at their acting finest. I would recommend it to everyone. After the credits roll you'll be left with thoughts of what it means to be prejudiced and how it can be combated on a personal level. I know this subject has nothing to do with homelessness directly. But if we can all think a little less biased. The world won't be so bleak.

Being homeless is something no one ever thinks will happen to them but when it did happen to me I was one of the lucky ones that it was for only 9 months but being homeless is not a crime the reason I became homeless was I left a very toxic relationship and had I not left I would most likely have died sure I could have gone to my local shelter or the police but out of fear I just felt it was best to just leave and only keep in contact with 2 family members so they knew my whereabouts and when I felt safe I moved back to my home town people being homeless is heartbreaking to say the least we all have our own story as to why we ended up on the streets but we are all still humans and deserve to be treated as so it’s been years now and I’m doing good I have rebuilt my life and am married but I now choose to live in a RV full time and we could not be happier with our choice of downsizing from a 2 bedroom to a 34 ft RV my thought and prayers to each and everyone living on the streets may god place his hand on you and protect you and your family each and every day

Many similarities in all these stories. It is simply sad to realize what a daily struggle being homeless entails. Just to survive. I am grateful for the roof over my head and a bed to sleep in. Also running hot water and some heat. Hope this lady can get off the streets. I pay 60% of my income on housing. So, many landlords expect too much and there is no ceiling on what they can ask. Nonsense! Children being afraid of homeless people? That's the parents expecting the worse. Kids do have their own judgement!!! And some are wiser beyond their years or smarter than their parents!!!! I wish this lady well. I pray she can get off the streets, as it must be a nightmare!!! We are all human. What is wrong with people today? Everyone is on their device and look down upon others who have less. Mazel tov! Well said.

A few years ago there was a man without legs who would sit at the entrance of the grocery store in his wheelchair. I found out some customers had complained about him, and insisted he go. I went to the manager and gave him an earful. I said Jimmy wasn't harming anybody. I asked 'how would you like it if your only entertainment was sitting on the corner of the intersection watching traffic go by?' He of course had no answer. I said if customers don't like seeing him in his wheelchair, they can always go in and out of the other entrance. Some people have zero empathy and compassion. I wouldn't want to be them.

I believe the persons initial comment was referring to churches and other organizations that say they are there to help ppl in need - but do little to nothing for them with their donated overflow - as you can see as far as some churches are concerned they are buying mansion and cars and jets instead of helping those in need.
