Since this interview, Reset (not her real name) has been removed from the faith-based shelter and is now back living in her car. If you'd like to help her, here is a link to her GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/f/want-my-li....
Reset is a physically disabled homeless woman in Oceanside, California, who faced discrimination when staying in a 30-day faith-based shelter. After the 30-day period, she was removed from the shelter because she is not a Christian. This exclusion goes against the teachings of Jesus, who commanded his followers to show unconditional love to everyone, including the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and those in need.
While some ministries genuinely help homeless people, many others use an outdated discipleship model that prioritizes religious programming over providing services and support. Withholding basic needs from hurting people is not what Jesus would do. It’s coercion, not Christianity.
Reset became disabled after a freak accident. She was a nomad living in a skoolie bus, working remotely, when she flew out of the windshield, causing her disability. She lost 95% of everything she owned and now has to use a walker to get around. True homelessness is the absence of choice. Many people intentionally live in vehicles, but any time they want to go rent an apartment, they can. Homeless people that live in vehicles have no other choice. This is the big difference between a nomadic lifestyle and homelessness.
Reset's story highlights the larger issue of discrimination, as people with physical disabilities face significant barriers to finding adequate shelter and services. Reset shared that she called over 70 service providers to find help and learned that many don't have a bed or don't support people with physical disabilities. Unfortunately, many service providers lack the resources and accommodations to support people with disabilities, leaving them without access to basic needs like shelter, food, and medical care. It's unacceptable that homeless individuals with physical disabilities are being left behind, and more needs to be done to ensure they receive the support they need.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Here's Reset's GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/f/want-my-life-back-homeless-sucks Jesus said, "only help people exactly like you," - NO HE DID NOT! Jesus commanded His followers to extend unconditional love to everyone: Luke 14:13-14 (NIV) “But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Reset's story hits hard because I lived in a faith-based homeless shelter for seven years and then worked in full-time ministry for over a decade. While there are wonderful ministries that do help homeless people unconditionally, most faith-based shelters, especially Rescue Missions, use an outdated discipleship model to coerce homeless people into forced religious programming. The most common model is the rescue mission will allow a homeless person a bed for 30 days. If they want to stay, they have to agree to daily bible studies and mandatory church services. There's really no path out unless the person wants to go into full-time ministry, which is exactly what happened to me. I wanted my life back, but the only way out of the shelter was to go work for a ministry. WITHHOLDING BASIC NEEDS FROM HURTING PEOPLE IS NOT CHRISTIANITY! The Jesus I follow helps everyone unconditionally without any agenda.

Exactly. Even Jesus said "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Omg what a heartbreaking predicament. Jesus would not turn his back on her. A true Christian would not force her to participate in Bible study in order to have basic shelter. She’s just a normal regular human who fell thru the cracks. We really do need to stop seeing the unhoused as separate from us. I hope she gets her 3 wishes asap. Best wishes to her & all the unhoused. Judge not lest thee be judged. Who will cast the first stone?

It’s a Bible study. You don’t have to be religious to go to one. You don’t even have to talk. This seems kind of ridiculous to choose the street over sitting in a Bible study. I don’t think it’s unfair to expect participants to participate in the curriculum of the program to be there. Obviously the Christian’s believe that it will be helpful to them, and the principles they will talk about in the study probably will be. This kind of minimal participation can be a good gauge of if people are going to be willing to put in some effort and try to help themselves. It just seems foolish to turn down help for that reason. Most organizations that help the homeless are also Christian. You don’t have to be, but at least recognize that it is the Christian faith and those who believe in it that are getting you off the streets and humor them with a Bible study.

You say that but think of how much worse it would be for the homeless people of your community if those Christians weren't there offering up shelter, food and whatever else they can. I'm NOT saying shelters are the best solution any more than a single sandwich is the best solution for hunger. Shelters are only good when you think about the alternative of dying alone on the streets. A secure shelter is better than the streets. A shelter rife with crime is much worse than the streets. A shelter that prohibits bringing in of personal items and excludes dope addicts and drunks is likely a safer shelter for all concerned. Low barrier shelters require more staff with exceptional training to deal with challenging clients.

I know from personal experience its hard to hide your stuff and even worse the next morning when you go find that everything you owned is gone. I went through that for 2 years. You wanna know who stole my stuff????? Other homeless people! They took what little I had and sold it off for booze and drugs. Obviously NONE of you have ever been homeless and you are all pretenders who think they understand what really happens out there. You have to deal with the drunks and the drug addicts and the crazy people and wonder if you will be attacked in the night. So if you are lucky enough to find a shelter that enforces the rules be THANKFUL! I know it sucks to lose everything but its better than having to deal with the nut jobs and the booze hounds.

So they are giving food and shelter and restrooms. A place to be dry and warm and get cleaned up. That is huge. But they probably do not know of any other way to keep the shelter free of weapons and drugs and alcohol. They want the shelter safe for all. So those wanting a safe warm and dry bed and food and restrooms have a place to come. That is huge. To be warm and dry at night is huge. Some homeless have a very small income and some pick cans. Those ones can rent a tiny storage unit for $50 or so per month to keep their belongings. Many homeless people collect ten or twenty dollars by picking cans and bottles and others do odd jobs such as mowing grass or helping haul stuff or helping set up. Those also could rent rent one of the tiniest storage lockers on a monthly basis. Others unfortunately may have to hide their belongings in the trees somewhere and hope for the best. I know these options are not the best. They are a total drag but may be worth it in exchange fir a safe warm and dry bed and something to eat. Those shelters are still giving in the only way they know to keep the shelters safe and drug free. But at least they are bringing them in out of the cold and rain and feeding them and offering it more safely for all. If they were stepping over them and ignoring them and refusing to help well that would be so wrong. But that is not what they are doing.

She likely knew this going in, and since she's been there a few weeks, they probably overlooked her lack of attendance for awhile. If I was homeless and staying at a Buddhist homeless center or Hindhu center, I would sit through a few lessons because a) it might be interesting and I could learn a thing or two which I could apply to my life b) help can be found through many ways and c) to show my respect to the people who are supporting me to live every day. It's usually not smart to divulge your differing opinions due to their lack of self-awareness and intolerance. I love to chuckle over how Borat often riled up the evangelical audience in the South. Most shelters are in it for the money. All one needs to do is, Google " profiting off the homeless" and you can see for yourselves just how this is done. Shelters keep people homeless. They want livestock. The Homeless Industrial Complex at work. Lobby your City Council meetings, and demand that housing that's affordable be built,at least for seniors, disabled, working class, and veterans. That's one way to really help homeless people. There's just not enough housing. Rents are too high.

This is what bothers me. Idc I’m just going to say it. Mental health and all the other above, is not considered in this country unfortunately. Healthcare is ridiculous to me, babies being born in these hostile environments like lab specimens although the environment of hospitals are “designed” to be like that for docs and nurses which I understand that being a concern. However, why can’t their be a third option of having comfortable birthing setting or care? When people are passed out, ill, etc. our subconscious still takes in everything our environment is. This is the reality of America. This woman wants to make money to help with her mental health but yet, where is the support?? I’m eternally grateful for low income health insurance w BCBS otherwise idk if I’d be alive today. I’ve tried SO many medications and FINALLY the one that works is over $1000. Had some complications at pharmacies and they told me I had to pay $972 to get this medicine. In my mind I’m thinking, wow, I want the medicine so I can be well to do work to make money for the medicine I can’t get without the money. How does that work? I contacted my dr. (Another person I’m eternally grateful for) and his nurse practitioner spoke with my insurance and got me approved. The process of this can get complicated and tricky. The point is…. If it is this way, how can one that is mentally or physically in distress receive help? Obviously this world is transactional and this is capitalism here… but when will we evolve into something we as a country are ACTUALLY proud of?

Disability... It took me 27 months for me to get disability and was I turned down I believe 4 or 5 times. When my case finally got to a judge who read my papers he did not even require that I attend a hearing and was really mad that I was turned down for disability and he granted my disability. I had a medical event that disabled me and I recieved no assistance or income of any kind for over a year until I finally could take early social security losing a third of it. My disability attorney said almost all of his clients end up homeless in the process of waiting for a hearing. I was lucky as I had a lifetime of high income employment and could live off of savings though I did have to sell my house and did live in my car for a week. The system is broken, most do not have the savings that I had to get through. Most first world nations do not let this happen to their citizens but our govenment spends on wepons of death and the military and lets our people suffer on the streets.

Per diasbility I should add that the doctor that the govenment eventually sent me to in order to evaluate me had me touch my toes and walk ten feet, literally that was it. On the basis of that he said I had no disability. He did not review my medical records which clearly outlined my disability and my need to plug into a medical device three times a day for three hours and elevate my legs ABOVE my waist the rest of the day. This is what angered the diability hearing judge who in his summary written comments trashed that doctor used by the govenment for his "negiligence".

I will say again, homelessness is caused by incongruent culture and beliefs that have little to no support in the space. That means when society doesn’t or won’t accept the basis of the individuals means to produce thoughts, that their ideas becomes unattainable for the majority. The individual then becomes the outlier. As a former advocate for a community I can attest that not all of what you think is yours. What you own is time everything else is just a series of things that manifest for your use based in others using similar tools to gain access to societal growth.

This is a weird one. I hope she gets the help she needs, but its not the shelter or the transitional housing rejecting her but the other way around. They asked her about it, she said she wouldnt be part of their programs, so why shouldnt they prioritize helping the next person who would want their help? Especially a fellow Christian who needs their help. Their help includes the spiritual element. Which is why it more than likely was on the checklist if it would be acceptable. I dont agree with anyone being condescending to her, although she indicated it was her case worker not the actual shelter, even so I hope her case worker sees this video and is able to think of something. I hope she gets on her feet and is able to get a safe place to recoup and build again.

If a ministry wants to run a year-long bible study program for people, there is nothing wrong with that. But coercion is wrong. Often they will withhold food unless someone sits through preaching. That’s probably the most common. Offering a short-term shelter to “tease” people into bible studies then kicking them out if they don’t agree should be illegal.

@@InvisiblePeople honestly this is the 1st time I've ever heard about this type of practice. Especially withholding food for someone you are caring for. But I do know we are called to prefer helping the poor & needy believers, to care for those within our community first, it's natural for it to pour out to others, who don't share our faith, but we are called to love one another as Christ loved us. No1 should be forced into anything. That includes everyone in the scenario. I hope this lady find a place where she is comfortable. It doesn't make sense to me to prefer homelessness over not hearing bible or pretending to play along until you are on your feet, even you said you did it. It is wrong to throw ppl out and/or refused them food if you've already committed to helping them. This is not an easy situation. In Canada they offer the homeless euthanasia, in America there are orgs & faith based orgs around that try to offer what they know/feel will help. One day Christians won't be running any orgs, these places will cease to operate. Ppl will get what they want. We (Christians) aren't called to take care of our nation but the help that we provide when start following Jesus naturally lends itself to providing hope for ppl that have none. If you don't want that, it's okay. She is in a place where she is between two rocks. I'm not in her position, I really hope she finds the help she needs. There are poor Christians too, there are homeless Christians too, there are people who dont care what they have to do to secure safe place to lay. That's why I said this was weird. Your channel has opened my eyes a lot. I hope more places open up that can help and that won't practice the tactics you've witnessed & experienced. God bless.

@jasminegonzalez2007
@jasminegonzalez2007 Жыл бұрын
@@catherineblair550 I wouldn't do it because I do believe in Jesus and there is no God but Him. So like I said, I'm not in her position and I hope she finds some place she is comfortable. Also please let me know when you find a place that actually does worship Hindu deities and helps the homeless with shelters, food, and resources for rehab. Hopefully they are in the county she is in and she can have an additional option. The difference would be I wouldn't even mention the place or say I am being forced to do anything because I am choosing not to because I can't agree to their terms. I couldn't even eat the food because it is usually presented as a sacrifice to idols. So I respect what she doesn't want to participate in. I reject that it is the shelter's program fault. My Holy scriptures spell out a day where one day the people of God (Jesus) will have to choose between buying & selling or death, just for not renouncing him. I get what people are saying and I understand that she was given the option to go to a faith based program and she said she would not participate in it. So they now have to look for a program that will not include the faith based part. I do understand what you are implying, that she shouldnt have to pretend if she doesn't believe, but she doesn't believe in anything so Jesus vs little g Hindu deities and any other deities known to man would be the same in her sight. They wouldn't be the same to a Christian, so if someone doesn't want to participate in a faith based program, and there is a spot open, it should go to the one that would. Faith based programs aren't the only ones around, and we all know that. I hope she finds what she needs and that her go fund me gets over funded so she can get what she needs to not only move around but find shelter. Homelessness is real and scary and I don't want to see anyone in it. It's hard when it's preferred though, so yes, if I found myself between the street and the option for Sanskrit reading worship of a false god, it's no brainer. The street wins every time because I still have Jesus. He knew what it was like to 1 not be welcomed & 2 have no where to lay His head. He also told His disciples to shake the dust off from the towns / homes that rejected their message. ✌️ Choice. I do pray that as many as possible come to faith in Christ, true faith. I hope they do so before the time of the tribulation happens. Jesus is the only way to the Father. He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is salvation. He didn't promise life without trials, actually said we would have them and because of His name some would endure more than most but we would be saved not only from coming destruction but for eternity. We would have a forever home that can never be stolen from us or decay. Much love. Peace. Jesus does love each every person He created, He allows people to come to Him even when events line up to being stuck in a shelter. How will anyone come to faith, if they never hear the gospel? Jesus came down, lived perfectly, and died as punishment. He was the sacrifice between a Holy God and sinful people. He rose from the dead on the third day, just the scriptures said, only the righteous one could. He was the only righteous one found. He is God incarnate, death could not hold Him. All who put their faith and trust in Him are justified in the eyes of God. He is freedom. All who believe in His name, will be saved and shall not perish. What's coming to this world is worse than homelessness, be found in Christ, or at least remember these words: call on Jesus.

Not sure if that's true to be honest, unless you've had many experiences with different churches, you cant just generalize and say "very few" churches care about people. Though I would agree that certain churches have different choices and priorities.
