Invisible People

Күн бұрын

While walking with James to Best Buy on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, my heart broke seeing Leeza sitting on the sidewalk "flying a sign". Leeza is 22 years-old and has been homeless in New York City for two months.
Leeza panhandles to survive. She is trying to save up her money to get back to the West Coast.
The night before she slept outside in the front of a church.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

She didnt say " i wish i was rich " or " i wish i was a superstar " or anything like that. She had three wishes and wished for the basics. A job, a home and love all over the place. @Andrew Smith that is a stupid thing to say. Obviously her biological parents rejected her or else she would be with them, unless they died. Even if the social sevices took her from her birth parents they could have cleaned up their act and petitined the court (not the bitch social workers) to get her back.

@Andrew Smith I understood. I am saying how does one get to non- biological parents if the biological ones didn't reject them first?
@אוריפלסי
@אוריפלסי 4 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Smith yes and no. You have to take into account that a lot of adopted kids come from mothers that did drugs while pregnant and they are born with some sort of problem as a result. She might be one of these. However quite often the parents know there will be problems and are very dedicated. I have known adoptive parents of troubled kids and they were amazingly dedicated. I just don't think it is fair to say "oddoptive parents, figures".
@אוריפלסי
@אוריפלסי 4 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Smith Still it shouldn't be said like a given. Besides, there are two sides to an argument. Who says the foster parents where in the wrong abd didn't truly love and care for her. Even when she is living in the streets there is only so much they can do. I have biological kids, and i can't force them to let me help them with everything. I let them know that i am there for them whatever the problem but they have to let me help them, and they are still minors, how much more adult children.

I stopped and we chatted for a few minutes and you were telling me you were saving your money to move to San Francisco. I moved home to Ireland after that and have since moved to Australia. What a lovely surprise to see this video and even better to know you’re doing well now. Wishing you the best for the rest of your life ❤️

I worked 2200 hrs to 0635 hrs. which is the Graveyard shift. I patrolled the subways at this time of. night mostly alone. My main assignment was to talk and listen to the homeless population of upper Manhattan. I done the assignment for three years which I have documented 500 interviews with the homeless population. So many are victimized, and treated horribly.

to be homeless is to have so little value you can't even help yourself. to be rich means you have lots of value created for others or yourself. ...You ever stop to wonder we look at the rich with a more positive light- maybe because we know they are actually contributing something to this world taking care of at least themselves if not providing useful trade desired goods or services to others, meanwhile the homeless are in nearly all cases leeches, or criminals, who usually have failed multiple times and have such problems that they don't even have friends willing to help or care for them.

I was also homeless when I went for a Job/apprenticeship from my hometown Hamburg to Berlin. My partner (student) and I found luckily an apartment, but after 1 year the landlord sold the entire house to an investor. Things broke apart. We couldnt make it to pay the high rent anymore, we did not find a new apartment together. I became homeless, my mother did / does not care about me and it's common here, that the parents sign the contract of renting the flat. The landlords often choose from 150+ candidates for one flat and compare the income of the parents. I reached out to my mom for help when I became homeless, but she said get a job and make it on your own. She could not even imagine I had a job!! and that things like this can happen to everyone though! I Even heard similar stories about young couples in their 30s, also debt free, who have a good salary, working several years in the same company with savings etc, couldn't find something. Or families, who still live in a 35m2 room with their babies/children, searching years for something bigger. It was a hard time. I noticed that here are also many students that live only in their car and shower in the gyms. Now I made it on my own, but the time left so many scars in my head. It changed me, changed my vision of society.. And by reading some comments I realize, that the few strangers on the street cared more for me, than my own mother. Please people, don't let the world become a greedy, egoistic, lonely place.

My mom also didn't want me around. When I was 15 she had my dad throw me out. We lived in L.A. and I spent the next 1 1/2 years hitchhiking between S. California and N. California on Highway 99. Spent a week with a preacher and his family living in a VW Bus just outside of Yosemite and ate veggie hot dogs everyday. This happened in 1969. Had to talk my way out of some old guy wanting sex and had to fight my way out of another car where the guy wanted to rape me. I was 16 then. During those years I met some really nice people who would give money or food or anything they could to help. I repaid when I met another guy hitchhiking who had been robbed of everything he owned, including his shoes! I gave him an extra pair of boots I had and some socks and a shirt. It wasn't fun living on the road, having cowboys in Bakersfield throwing beer bottles at me on the entrance to the highway and then circling around and doing it again. I learned the hard way to not accept rides to Bakersfield, either go past or just before but don't get dropped off there! In 1971 my Dad asked me if I would come home. I did and 9 months later I joined the Army on the "enlist for the draft" deal they had going. Even though I missed my last two years of High School I passed the GED test and went in the Army. Spent 3 years, got out, got a job and now I'm happily married and retired. I'm 67 now and still remember some of the people who were kind to me then.

Each individual can create their own value in life. One person's success has nothing to do with another one's failure. We all have opportunities to create value regardless of the choices of other people around us. It's not other people's job to take care of someone. Responsibility is in the individual to create value to sustain their own life. unfortunately some people are genuinely worthless and can't do anything to take care of themselves or offer anything to others. we try to help them sometimes but eh what are you going to do when they fail so hard? blaming someone who doesn't fail and has money is not a solution to the problem. Making everyone support these losers through force is also not sustainable. best thing to do is to preach personal responsibility to break the delusion of victimhood.

Shocked that the comment section on this insightful piece of journalism and the girl who's telling her story, is tainted with a small bunch of people who are more interested in vile name calling and making disgusting references about sexual abuse. She may well be using drugs or alcohol, people do that to escape their reality, you don't have to be a psychologist/counsellor to understand how that could happen. But that is not the focus of this video, it's not a documentary on drug abuse.....LISTEN to her, and really HEAR what she is saying. We're not animals...we don't need to bark and growl at each other. That's really nice of you the young lady I wish you could meet a mentor set that's what she needs to help get her back on the right track you can tell she she still young she still she still vulnerable she still has a sense of Innocence about her she still good she still pure she's not hard yet the streets haven't got her yet and there was a lot of hope for her I just wish somebody would step up to the plate and help this young lady so that she could help herself.

I've watched quite a few of these videos and every time they get asked about the three wishes the answers are generally non-selfish and include helping others who are homeless in the same situation. Most non-homeless people, including my self, would generally put them selves first; new car, millions of dollars, big house and so forth, but for some reason they want to help other people who are suffering. I don't know if it's because they are put on the spot with a camera on them and don't want to appear to be selfish or if they have a deeper level of empathy because they know what misery the streets can bring.

Not a Profit oh it's totally cause of the camera. I live and work in a city. Most of them don't learn dick and the more you get to know them the more you see why they're homeless. And some choose to be after they get offers cause some learn it's easier to live on the street than pay rent.

I am from Europe and I think that a lot of american achievements deserve our appreciation. But when I was in the US and saw all the poverty and homeless people on the streets, I had to ask myself how could this county describe itself as the greatest country of all times?

@Ahmed Musa Although it might be unfortunate there will always be people that don’t want to work and do their fare share. Been that way from the beginning of times. Alcoholism and drug addiction factor into it also. Some people just don’t want to be helped. America is the greatest country of all time. If it’s a realistic dream, you can sacrifice, work hard, and eventually achieve it. God bless America

I've been all over the world and have seen poverty everywhere. Its unfair to blame the country. People make their own decisions. Also, The U.S. has a much larger population than all the European countries. Los Angeles alone has more people than all of Finland. If we continue using Finland as an example, they depend on the U.S. for protection, and so dont spend a lot of money on their military. They have the money to spare to put into social programs.

Mikaela Jansson I haven’t ever wanted to leave the United States. What I mean by the greatest is the fact that the worlds economy lies on our backs. We lead the world in technology, infrastructure, science/medicine, military, sports, humanitarian aid, agriculture and that more people want to immigrate here than anywhere else. Last but not least I can’t forget about our very large egos! Lol

I was homeless when I was younger. I am now 24 years old and spent 13 years in the foster system and bounced around through 53 homes. I had a family who adopted me when I was 17 and that never worked out and I was sent back to foster care and ended back on the streets and was sleeping everywhere And anywhere I could. Even some of my friends would let me stay at there houses from time to time. When I was able I went to school and barely got my high school diploma and then volunteered to join the service. I have been in the military ever since. I plan on getting out soon but to this day being homeless still haunts me. Growing up in foster care wasn’t easy for a lot of us. All we had was each other when I was on the streets. I never wish for anyone to ever be homeless but with how the system is there will always be homeless people who either age out of the system on the basis on having no one in there lives.

Being homeless: "'I came to see society - the well-dressed people with jobs, homes, food, family, friends and stability - as reinforcers of my feelings of shame and self-disgust. For the most part, to be homeless is to be see-through. In my experience, the vast majority of passersby pretend that the unfortunate soul on the park bench or huddled on the inner-city footpath in front of them simply isn’t there. They’d look right through me as if I was made of glass. In a twisted way, I sometimes felt a bashing was preferable to being “blanked” by the general public. At least the thugs were engaging with me. After 25 years of being homeless, I learned there’s one simple thing you can do to help. Maybe you cannot make a difference to that person’s circumstance, but you can make a difference to how you see them. Many are hurting with the shame and stigma of being homeless. Don’t pretend they don’t exist: they are people too." "Out of the Forest" by Gregory P Smith - Penguin Random House
