Thanks to an old friend who turned me on to INXS in 1984. You know who you are. As a drummer, INXS inspired me to pursue other styles of music by their use of dynamics in the bridge of this song. The Farriss bros are a highly underrated group of musicians. Great songwriters. We haven’t forgotten INXS. I am commenting because I am here listening to these great tunes, fed up with today’s crap on the radio. Thanks to INXS and other 80’s bands for bringing great melodic substance to music. I was born in 83, my two older brother clued me into all the earlier awesomeness of the 80s that I was too young to register at the time it was happening. I can remember my brothers popping their cassette tapes in and out of the boom box: INXS, U2, Duran Duran, The B-52s, R.E.M., Chris Issak, etc. Then the 90s came and added to the musical awesomeness I grew up with. If I had a time machine, I would start in the 60s and go through the 90s watching all the greats of their times perform live in their primes. The closest thing to an actual time machine is KZbin.

@elizabethbowie9753 Music is sometimes like a ship that transports us right back to the moment we first heard a song or the strongest memory tied to it. Some songs never get stale, but you find yourself wishing you could experience it for the first time again. I'm so grateful for my parents' musical influence on my siblings and I and my older and younger siblings' influences on my musical tastes. I find it hard to connect with my nieces' and nephew's current music, but I've found gems here and there. With so many of the greats we've enjoyed for so many years passing on the last several years, it's been rather sobering. Their music will live on, thankfully, and my neices' and nephew's generations are discovering them thanks to youtube, Spotify, iTunes, etc. Thanks for the reply 🖖🙂👍

I agree. I was from a small Midwest town that got cable quite late. I was enamored with Saturday night special, and definitely MTV when we got it. Music opened my world to other countries. I was all over the place. I loved US rock, but I also got to experience different kinds of music from outside the US. Young people won't understand because we had no internet. We only had tv.

I saw INXS in 1983. Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, BC( Canada). They opened for The Stray Cats. Of COURSE they played “The One Thing”! Was one of their first big hits. You have to live the opening, and those killer guitar riffs! This song has it all; great guitar riffs, drumbeat perfectly setting the rhythm, and soaring vocals courtesy of Michael Hutchence. INXS at their peak, a veritable tour de force in the ‘80s!
