The sleeziest I've seen are microtransaction games which build up a story, then increase the difficulty at the end. You can play through almost all the game without having to spend any real money, though it would save you a bit of grinding if you did. Then you near the end, and really want to see how the story finishes... and suddenly you're looking at weeks-long grinding efforts to advance the game a even a little bit further. By that point the player is too emotionally tied in to quit - they want to see how it ends, even if it means paying.

I remember playing a game as a kid (around 2006) called zwok, it was basically a multiplayer worms ripoff, it was lots of fun. Something like 10 years later I tried to play it again and, to my surprise, it still worked, and seemed more alive than ever. It took my dumbass 4+ hours of winning against bots with the same strat over and over to realize no actual multiplayer was taking place. It gave a sudden feeling of shame and frustration, followed by utter loneliness and nostalgia. Man I really miss that game.

A lot of games from the early 90s (before Internet gaming took off) do that with their multiplayer. It's been a while, but I think the original Warcraft 2 and Master of Orion 2 worked that way. ...and it makes sense if everyone is either in the same room or you know the person on the other end of the dial-up connection. They're not going to be your friend much longer if they don't learn to use pause responsibly.

I remember when agar.io and slither.io blew up but I never really caught on with them. Then I noticed a surge of similarly-named games and figured something was up. Mobile seems truly a sad place to be right now, and I wonder if I'll ever hear of some good ones. ofc it doesn't help that I've given up, but this is why I'm cautious about any 'free' buttons.

As long as it is disclosed, I think that AI can help supplement multiplayer games to keep matches going. There are some multiplayer games that I know of that could benefit from some good AI. I do understand if they are scamming people with these fully fake multiplayer game then it can be viewed in a negative light.

The Slithar.io community acknowledged that there were a lot of bots and once you got to a higher tier of playing you were able to recognize the bots from real players. The bots became part of the meta and while I was a part of the community I thought that it worked well and was enjoyable. The take away from my experience was that bots were an obstacle that you could utilize with and against other players. However, this obviously only works if the game is multiplayer to begin with. So I don't think bots themselves are neccessarily bad, but games like hole.io are literally cancer.
