When you took yours apart and reassembled it, it fixed your problem. So you KNOW your issues were caused by poor contact WITHIN the car's charge port leading to overheating. This is a manufacturing issue and requires a physical fix. Not necessarily new hardware, but a reseating and securing of charge port components.

Still very surprising. My car has NO issues at 300 amps charging (The 800volts DC port). Those cables and port is suitable for very high current connections. For level 2 I have no issue at all, that is only 3 fase 16Amps. or one fase max 32 amps. (11kw or 7kw one fase charging at 240 volts). It seems that the korean factorie did not take care about the 110 Volts systems in USA (and maybe also in the UK) when developiing the suystem...double amperas makes 4 times more heat....(W=I*R^2) R is resistance in the connector which is responsible for the heat production at that place. I suppose it is not that easy to replace the whole connector with a 4 times heavier wiring. However I do know a solution...Charge at home with a ccs DC charger (or whatever port is on your car) and convert your electricty to DC before charging. Unfortunate...DC chargers are much more expensive to install than AC 11KW chargers. Even if that also is an 11KW charger.(On solar panels if you like) link: electrek.co/2024/05/08/dc-to-dc-solar-powered-ev-charger/ I do not get any money for placing this link...it is only informativ to a kind of new system.

Our home charger, a ChargePoint Home Flex, has literally only ever plugged in to our EV6. It is not damaged. Yet after about a year charge failures started. One side of the connection or the other HAS to be out of spec and this reportedly happens with all brands of chargers… I have found reducing the strain on the connector by looping the cable over the charge port door can help reduce the temperature (verified with ODBII scanner). There is a ton of play in the connection. Cleaning the connections helped temporarily. I’m thinking about 3D printing some sort of shim that will help reduce the play and better support the charge handle.

Had the update done to my I5 last week. It improved the charging rate after throttling-about 8.7 Kw, up from 7.5-but didn’t fix the problem. I am taking the car in today for some hardware fixes with hope this will finally restore the full 11.5 Kw charge rate permanently. 2023 AWD, 26k miles.

Hyundai replaced my charge port a few months ago on the 2023 Ioniq 5. It wasn't easy to convince them to do it, required me to replace my EVSE with a new one so I had charging graphs to prove when the session would drop, and it required screenshots from my OBD sensor to prove how quickly it would overheat. The employees at my local Hyundai dealer didn't want to do anything because they couldn't reproduce it on their DC fast charger (yes, that's correct their staff didn't understand the difference between AC and DC charging).

Thanks for this information, Corbin. Like the previous software update to correct overheating during charging (SC 9A1 or 997?), it seems Hyundai continues to have engineering problems in this area. But, if a hardware fix/replacement would keep this from happening again, I would suggest an update to the charge port. But if that's the fix, why not go right into the NACS port, even for those 2022-2024 models. Have a safe move!

@theioniqguy Your video where you took port apart and reseated pins has to be the problem. I wish I could get details on how to attempt this my self. The Fact that some people have had the Port Replaced only to have the issue return in 3-6 Months shows its the connection. I have to base my charging speed on ambient temperature now. Anything over 37amps will overheat the port after 90minutes in my garage. I have a Chargepoint Flex with a 60 amp breaker. The Car Charged at 48amps form October 23 when New until March of 24 when I had to Step Down the Charge. This new Update will almost cancel any hope of a New Charging Port.

Problematic. Earlier Mach e's had an overheating battery connector issue that was approaching dangerous. They issued a couple of software updates which didn’t resolve the matter. Then they issued a hardware fix, however this has taken a long time and is very complex to install. Ford has since fixed the problem on newer vehicles but at least they stepped up to the plate. Not really happy about these software fixes that don't really solve the problem, as it's the hardware.

From the UK…my MY22 began to stop charging completely this summer, but resume again after around half an hour. It has never reduced the charging current, just stopped and then restarted once presumably cooled down. Dealer service noted overheating fault codes but Hyundai blamed charging cables and home wall charger. After production of lots of evidence they agreed to replace the charging port and now so far all is back to normal. So a hardware fix required…none of these software updates to reduce charging speed which is masking a hardware issue with the port.

I'll report in later this weekend. My EV6 received the update this morning. Both it and our Ioniq 6 have been max L2 charging at 5 kW. The Ioniq 6 is charging now and is throttled again. We've had this experience in the North East for the last few weeks while the heat wave has been occurring. I will charge the EV6 later to see if the issue has resolved with this update

The Ioniq 6 kept slow charging at 5kW until full. It doesn't have this update yet. The EV6 I plugged in overnight. It was cooler, down to the 80s. It finished charging at the expected time but the only difference I noticed on plugging in was that right away it started charging at about a half kW slower than normal. I checked a few times in the night on my phone and did not observe any noticeable deviations in the expected time to charger to 100.

GV60 in Canada, I got the latest VCMS recall update last month but obviously not the charge derating software patch which I thought was included. MY GV charges at 40 amps for exactly 8 minutes before it hits 101C abort charging wall, no derating just stops. 30.6 amps is about my charge max, even with that its a steady yet toasty 86C VCMS AC outlet temp. Even my old 2020 Kona EV was able to AC charge faster. These software management patches are total bullsht for what are Hyundai's flagship EV products. Its a massive bad look. This needs to be a hardware fix.

My 2023 Genesis GV60 is having this problem when using my home level2 charger. It stops charging for a minute or so and then restarts charging at the original rate. The software patch is a big improvement but I still feel like I am owed more by Hyundai. The highest continuous charging power I can get is still only about 6.6 kW. Maybe I can live with that but not the fact that I paid full price for a car that is supposed to charge at home at 11 kW. That seems to be be pretty standard now among other EVs I could have bought. So if Hyundai can't fix this they should tell me which EVSE will do better or refund some of the purchase price. I hope the class action lawsuit will force them into a fix or compensation. Have not heard whether it has been settled yet.

I used to have the issue where after a while on Level 2 charging, the car stopped the charging completely. I would come out to check on it, and the car was not charging at all and hadn't been for hours. It was frustrating. After the previous "fix", now the car reduces charging to 5.4 kW, and it remains there no matter what. It will never increase back up to 9.2 kW where it starts. It's almost reduced to 50% charging speed at that point. It looks like the only thing this fix does is allow charging to return to full speed after the temperature stabilizes. That's good news, but it's also disappointing. I don't think this will help much. I'm sometimes reduced to 5.4 kW after as little as half an hour. So this update will only marginally increase the small fraction of time I'm able to get full speed level 2 charging.

The curve at which the port is heating up isn’t a linear relation to charging current. I think you’ll likely see it go back up closer to 9.2kW. At least that’s what I’ve seen in some other that’s have shared their new charging curves

@@TheIoniqGuy I've got an update. It's been really annoying even trying to make an appointment for this update. I used the site you linked above to confirm that my vehicle is affected by this issue and eligible for the update. The service person is telling me "there are no open recalls for your vehicle". I said it is a Hyundai campaign, not an NHTSA recall, gave them the campaign #, gave them the site I'm using, and sent a screenshot. They haven't gotten back to me yet. (This whole conversation is happening through text because their scheduling system is down, and the phone number led me to an automated system that told me to text them). I know I sound cranky here, but good lord. My previous vehicle was a Honda, and scheduling an appointment was effortless. I'm not going to want to buy another Hyundai or a Genesis in the future if the dealership experience doesn't improve.

I still want an actual hardware fix. There is something fundamentally wrong with the J1772 port in the car, the wiring harness attached to it, and the temperature sensor which triggers the slowed charge speed condition interact with and connect to each other which afflicts no either BEV platform. And it’s a black eye for the Hyundai Motor Group and EGMP platform that they can’t make this work given that. I’ll take software updates, or even cleaning and maintenance tips, in the meantime, but it is no satisfying solution.

This sounds like they keep trying to use software fixes for a hardware issue. The fact that the cars only appear to start having an issue after regular use of the charge port indicates it is a hardware problem.

@@SonicCommenter agreed. My car charged just fine at 40 A when was new, but at about four or five months old I had to cut it back to 36 A and as it aged some more I’ve had to cut it back to 32 A. Something obviously is deteriorating physically.

They need harder pins. They’re currently too soft and getting worn down. Starting to see a pattern of Hyundai/Kia not wanting to fix hardware issues.

@TheIoniqGuy Let us know if you find out that the dates aren't correct. It seems strange that it wouldn't apply to early Ioniq 5s produced throughout 2022.

The dates are definitely incorrect as mine doesn't fall into that time frame and the Bluelink app says I have an open recall for this fix.

Well the last fix actually made my car worse. Learned about this yesterday and made an online appointment for this morning to have it done. They told me when I got there it would take 2 hours, which seemed extreme. But they paid for a Lyft to take me home and then one to bring me back to the dealer. Work is all done and we shall see if it improves anything next time I charge. I am hopeful, but we shall have to wait and see. Obviously this is just another patch that really does not solve the problem. Don't understand why they won't take the port apart like you did on yours and just make it work. Shame on Hyundai.

This is a joke that is now in its second year. I had a 2023 Ioniq 5 limited that charged fine for 6 months then derated everytime. They bought the car back. I now have 2024 Ioniq 5 limited with the same emporia charger that has charged perfectly but I’m still in that 6 month window.

I love my car but this still isn't a real fix. At this point, I will never purchase another Hyundai / Kia product ever again. I should have know they were not a good company after all of the vehicle thefts they allowed to happen for years as well as exploding engines. They never seem to step up and take any kind of responsibility.

I’m still super salty about this. I feel like this should have been a hardware recall but Hyundai is too cheap. Especially since I talk up EVs to everyone. Then someone who is a little more learned but isn’t convinced asked if there’s anything wrong with it. I can’t lie. I tell them about the L2 charging derate at home. I go on to say it’s not really an issue because it still charges at the speed I need, and it was a software update, and the car is still fine. And it won’t burn my house down. But you know they walked away from that conversation with a sour taste on EVs if they were really engaged. They climb into their 4Runner or Charger and feel that their skepticism about EVs is confirmed.
