Ioniq 5 Owners Thoughts - Only Charging At Electrify America For My 2 Months of Ownership

I've only been charging my Hyundai Ioniq 5 at my local EA station. I don't charge at home with the level 1 charger and I don't have a level 2 charger at home. So I've been depending solely on my local EA station for all of my Ioniq 5 charging. This video explores what that's been like.

I have a rare RWD Limited Ioniq 5. I'm also been exclusively charging on the free EA system. I have used both 350w (ultra fast) and 150w chargers. I have used a different EA each time I have needed a charge. I have noticed that the car hasn't been charging much quicker with the 350w than more plentiful 150w but I have been able to easily get to over 80% within my free 30 minute period. I live in CA and the weather here is very mild. I haven't even opened my the charging cable included in my car. I have never to wait to charge my vehicle.

Whoaa nice congrats on the RWD Limited, definitely a unicorn hah. That's really interesting about the 350kW chargers not charging much quicker. I agree about the 150kW chargers, they actually are plenty fast for me especially with warmer conditions. Glad to hear from another owner taking advantage of the free charging!

Had a level 2 unit installed in my garage a week before I brought home my Ioniq 5. The nearest EA station to me in Florida is 20 miles away. So the level 2 charger for me makes sense. I'll get to really try out Electrify America on my trip to Baltimore in May...Wish me luck! Enjoyed your video. (Former Jersey guy).

Ahh at 20 miles away, I'd probably have to install level 2 like you so totally makes sense. Definitely wishing you smooth travels! Outside of my one bad experience at the Abingdon station in Maryland, it's been great so hopefully it was a fluke. Are you planning to drive straight through or do you have some hotels lined up that might have destination chargers?

I had an Emporia Energy charger (made in Colorado company, level 2) installed in my garage which I use a few times a week. I’m rural and on an Electric Co-op and if I charge during off-peak hours (weekdays till 4pm or all day Sunday I’m only paying $.067/kWh! I can top off from 40-80% for less than $5! The closest EA station is about 20 miles away and is only the 150 speed but I will stop there and top off if in the neighborhood. When driving the 1,300 miles back from the dealer I was finding many 350 stations which was nice. Overall I’ve been very happy with my 2023 Ioniq5 Limited AWD and with Electrify America stations!

Glad to hear about your positive experience! Especially on that long drive, that was crucial. My experience with EA was great for the first few months. Since then with increased EV users charging, my local station has really just been trashed up. Connectors are beat up and the reliability is poor at best. If you don't have too many people using your local station, I think you'll have a pretty pleasant experience overall.

@@CarsJubilee I've only used one station (twice) sort of close to our home. It has four 150 Chargers and I've not run into any issues at that one yet. I've yet to use the one closest to our home (24 miles away in a direction we seldom travel...) On the way home from the dealership I only had to wait once or twice to get a spot. Charging at home during off-peak is so cheap it's really not a huge deal. I put over 24,000 miles on my last vehicle (Hyundai Palisade) in one year and I estimated I spent a bit over $3,000 on gas, a few hundred more on oil changes, air filters, etc. So far I've been very happy with my I5!

Awesome details. I really liked the charging rates at different temperatures. Hope Hyundai comes soon with the battery preconditioning which will increase the charging rates in winter especially when the outside temperature is 50° or less.

Already installed a L2 EVSE in the garage; even before getting my EV. I was suppose to get it last year but was delayed. Will keep another ICE car for long distance travel. I usually keep my cars for longer than average.

Gotcha I think that's the right approach honestly, it's better for the battery. Same here, still have an ICE car but I'm really wanting to switch out for another EV. Maybe will go hybrid eventually if I don't feel confident with road trip range/charging just yet. I typically switch every 3-4 years but then again this is my first brand new car purchase and first EV so who knows I may keep for longer too. Definitely will be going L2 by the end of year 2.

Thanks for the useful information. Do you know if your charging speed slows down at an EA station if multiple cars are charging? Today my speed (Ioniq5, 48 deg, 150 charger) seemed to increase from 80 to 102 kW when a car left. My overall experience is similar. Have had my Ioniq5 for 11 months and charge at Seattle University Village EA station (4 - 150kW chargers). One was out of service until this week and I’d estimate that 10-20% of the time the station is full and it has gotten worse over the year as more people have EV’s. They are building apartments in the area like crazy so the EA chargers will have to multiply or public charging around here will be too busy. I have a L-2 charger at home and just do 10 minutes or so once a week so my battery gets some variety including slower charges. I’ll use it exclusively (other than road trips) once my free EA privileges expire. I use EA when I’m at 20% or so and don’t go past 80% to go easy on battery. Charging speed has been really slow 60-70 kw this winter when temps 25-45 or so. Think I got 130 last summer when 70 deg. I’ve also really noticed my range decreases in cold temps. Around town in summer trying to optimize my driving technique I could get over 300 range and at freeway trip at 60-75 mph I’d get 3.2 m/ kWH so more like 240. This winter we’ve had some temperatures in teens to mid 30’s frequently and I’d guess my range is down 25% when it’s cold. I’d also recommend keeping charge above 20% unless road trip as the 12 V battery doesn’t charge from your battery pack when it is low. I experienced one episode of dead 12V and think it was because we were fiddling around at 7-10% charge and using heaters and other electronics Thanks again for your posts. Enjoy your car

Thanks Steve, very similar experiences with charging haha. The reliability and charging speeds seem to have gone down the drain since mid summer time when EA did a massive software upgrade to their chargers. I don't remember things being this slow last winter. Depending on how the chargers are setup, I believe it is possible to see decreased charging speed at a full station. So many variables at play, makes it difficult to figure out exactly what's going on with charging speeds but I've definitely seen a decline in speeds across the board. 25% change in range over the winter is actually really good. I'd say I'm right around there as well. Others can see more than 33% change in range, especially if doing a lot of high speed highway driving.

Indeed, same pattern as you, it’s 1.4 miles away, only 150 kWh and I just stop by at the end of the day and charge to 80%. Flawless, no issues, over three months I’ve only been the fourth vehicle once, it’s fantastic! I think it helps that ea has way more 150 kWh + chargers than Tesla, it seems most people don’t realize most huge capacity (stall wise) Tesla super chargers are 72 kWh. Getting the majority of evs in and out quick seems to be working so far with more locations and less stalls but way faster average speed 💪

Ahhh that awesome, glad to hear similar experiences. It makes me think that most EA stations are actually pretty consistent and I just happened to hit a bad one during our recent road trip. But I do worry how long before our local stations get overrun. It's takes quite a while to get a new station built and I'm not seeing any new ones coming up.

If you actually only go to EA stations every 3 days, it sounds like you dont even need an L2 EVSE (note: it's not a charger-the charger is in your car-the EVSE is just a cable that has a smart switch and negotiates power transfer rates). At home, I only have a 20A breaker left so I've been using my Bolt's dual-voltage EVSE on 240v @ 12A (max it does) and it's quite enough for overnight charging given the low-mileage I do. So, check how much you daily drive and make that your overnight recharge target. Those times you use more, stop at EA or let the car balance out over a couple of nights. I only DC fast charge when on the road. When I get my i5 in jully-ish, I plan a Montreal-to-Vancouver trip to really play with the car and its charging capabilities. But at home, I'll top at 240V @16A for my L2 EVSE.

Thanks for the charger/EVSE clarification, I'm sure I messed that up more than once in my videos. You are right, most times I probably won't need L2 and those other times I can stop by EA as needed. I'm pretty sure we are changing my wife's car in the next year or so to a PHEV or maybe an EV if we can find a 7 seater by that time that checks all the boxes and we are in the process of going solar. So I'll probably still end up installing a L2 EVSE at some point but I think we could get away without it for some time just using the outlets in the garage overnight.

It's $0.43/kWh here in California with EA fast chargers. My home power is $0.49/kWh once my home usage pushes me into the upper tier pricing and $0.39/hr for the lower tier. Time of use plans are just worse every way I've estimated it. My saving grace once the free EA runs out is that i can get 3hr of $0.15/kWh at 6kW chargers at my workplace which is enough to refill my roundtrip commute

@@CarsJubilee I'm using exclusively EA 150 kWH charger near my home when possible but I've topped up once with my 9.6 kWH EVSE at home and tried out the 6.6 kWH Chargepoint at my office, sadly those are split units so if someone else uses the other outlet, which is nearly always, I only get 3.3 kWH so can only get 9.9 KWH or ~35 miles of range during my 3hr max session length which is less than my 48 mile round trip commute

Mine consistently will hit a max over 100kW at some point during the session if it's at least 50F, it just may not happen till the very end of the charge session because it took that long for the battery to warm up. On the flip side I haven't seen anything over 150kW yet, also haven't seen any temps over 70F either though.

The charging station in the photo at 2:55 is ideal. The one at 3:30 minutes in to your video can be problematic when there are other cars charging. The cable isn't long enough in some of the configurations to reach the charging port on the rear passenger side. EA needs some longer cables. I had to back in to the only available unit really close to the unit...I mean really close. The cable barely made it to the charging port. Has anyone else had this issue?

Haha it's different every time I go charge, depending on who's there. Since manufacturers are all doing different things, it's like playing Tetris each time. Back in or pull forward, left side or right side etc.

First off sorry you had a rough go during the update but you helped me make sure not to make those mis-steps. I live near San Antonio Texas and the closest EA chargers are near my other house (where my daughter is the 'caretaker') and I now live in Lakehills Tx about 45 miles away so I've installed a grizzl-e 40 amp charger at home. 9¢ kW/h. But when I go to a soccer match which is over by my first home I charge up or when I go visit my daughter. But I'm definitely the statistical 80% charge at home person. Oh and I charge off peak (after 11 pm) but I honestly haven't checked the rate compared to the usual 9¢. Oh 45 minutes for the update btw.

At that rate plus your distance to EA plus wanting to keep it at 80% I think you've got a great charging schedule/system going on. That's my plan eventually as well, level 2 charger at home and charging to 80%.

Yes I would love to! The issue is that I don't have any 350kW station local to me, I envy those that do :) But I will definitely update once the hot weather kicks in and will add in numbers for the 350kW chargers if I do get the chance to try them again.

I live in an apartment and I have used the common charging point once and only once I have been to EA charging station when I picked up my Ioniq 5 2 weeks ago from Cleveland and drove to Columbus. I prefer charging at home and charge at EA station as I feel charging frequent DC Fast charging might impact the life of the battery. Also I have decided to charge between 20 to 80 and maintain at that level even when doing road trips as much as possible.

Oh interesting, has charging made day to day life harder vs a gas car for you? Your approach is the right one from what I've read, DC fast charging will degrade the battery quicker though the amount of degradation seems to be not as much as many have feared. And 20-80% or even 40-80% I've heard is a good range to stay within. I amm definitely approaching it (at least for the next 2 years while I have free charging) from the 'save as much money now as possible' angle and not really worrying about battery since Hyundai does have a warranty in place for the battery. I don't know the specifics of it so I should probably look more into that :)

@@CarsJubilee It's too early to say atleast for the Ioniq. I have Chrysler Pacifica PHEV since last one year. Mostly I have been charging it at my apartment and then at work. Except for long trips or trips greater than 15 to 40 miles round trip, I have been charging it overnight for next day use and I have been averaging 50 to 60 mpg which may vary from one person to another. Having said that for sure I am not finding it difficult. In fact the reason I bought the Ioniq 5 is to move away from gasoline as much as possible. And I don't repent that decision. Things will be lots different 5 to 10 yrs from now. Gas stations will slowly become like floppies and vhs tapes. Lol

In the US we get 2 years free charging (unlimited number of 30 min sessions). Supposedly reservation holders (people that put deposits down during the pre order process) are being given a 3rd year for free.

It sounds like someone trying to convince themselves. The bigger the gas station, the longer the trips inside. More food, more snacks, longer restroom restroom breaks.. The kind of thing people do when driving long distances. Still shorter then any chargring experience.

Ya not comparing this for road trips. This is specific to me and where I get gas for my other car. Everyone's situation is different but for me specifically I'm looking to replace my gas Volvo and go all electric because I'd rather charge at my local EA station or change at home vs deal with my local gas station which is overrun with people parking at pumps and then not coming back for 20 minutes because they are inside shopping where there's food and snacks etc. I've done a road trip with an EV and it wasn't the best experience, I'm 100% agreeing on that and hoping it gets better. But we don't road trip often and never very far so I think we can make it work.

Hahah ya most of these near home I don't do a full stop, I'd probably get rear ended in my area if I did :) Plus I've been driving slower (under speed limit) when I'm in the neighborhood with the Ioniq 5 and definitely have had quite a few people up on my bumper at the local stop signs. Definitely not a complete stop haha I find it pretty interesting how people drive in different cities. I was definitely doing full stops when we visited D.C. a few weeks back since that felt like the norm. Maybe Philly is overrun with other issues, people here rarely get pulled over for anything.
