Could not disagree more about not using the free charging. You said it yourself - Hyundai baked it into the price, and I have no plans on leaving a single electron on the table.

Another factor that clogs up EA stations is the slow charging rates of the ID4, and Bolt, and Mach E. I was in one of those charging lines on Thanksgiving and had do wait an hour and a half. I was only #5 in line for three chargers. Once I got to chargers, I was outta there in my normal 20 minutes. But out of the 6 charging stops I did (total round trip) I only had to wait that one time. All others had an open stall. Considering we are just exiting the infancy of the EV era, I just chalk it up to the growing pains of being a relatively early adopter.

I have a station 5mins from my house. I was filling up our suv every 3 days, 50-65 dollars before we bought our ioniq5. Now when I am down to 10-20 % I go late at night to the station and charge after the kids and wife are all sleep. I use that time to also get some groceries from the 24hr Walmart next to it. Usually on Thursdays and charge to 100% that way when we use the car Friday it doesn't sit at a 100% all weekend if we don't go out.

IONIQ 5 is my second EV. Have been home charging since 2016. Very fortunate to get free level-2 charging at work. EA by me is always full. 4 stalls but in the middle of 4 big townhouse developments. Never use it and have not used my free EA since taking delivery of my IONIQ 5 in August. I would have preferred lower car price and no free charging. Always appreciate your videos.

Great info, as always. An update for your viewers: I can confirm that the widely reported failure to start charging at EA sites is because they modified their software. If you are having the problem, simply add $10 to your account and the issue disappears. Some suggested you just needed to swipe "Charge" first but that is not the fix. I learned this from a very helpful EA employee who was working on a charger when I showed up and couldn't charge.

Planning on installing home charger after the 2 year free charging is over. Your comment about the cost being baked into the purchase price just reaffirms that for me.

I drove my 2022 I5 Limited from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, CA for Thanksgiving, with a side trip to Napa. No real range anxiety due to a strategy of stopping at every EA station along the way on I-80, charging only to 80% and then traveling at 80 mph in Eco Mode between towns--pretty normal speed for rural Nevada. This way I was spending 15-20 minutes charging at max speed, and not spending another 30 minutes to get from 80 to 100%. The family liked stopping more frequently to use the restroom and just stretch for a few minutes. You also get to see some places you'd normally just blast by on the freeway (like Battle Mountain, Nevada). Temps ranged from about 25-45 degrees for most of the trip, and I never experienced more than about 200 kw charging speed, and mostly around 150 even with battery conditioning and using the Hyper 350 charger. It was fast enough for me. The only overcrowded EA station we encountered was in Reno, Nevada where it was a cluster f*** with several cars wating in line. I had enough juice to make it to the next station in Truckee, CA and so left and went there. At two or three charging stations the EA app gave me an error message when trying to start the session, and so I had to use my credit card and pay out of pocket. That is until I figured out that if I closed the EA app and rebooted my iPhone, that the app would then work as intended. Overall the experience was satsifactory, but I still pine for more range.

Totally agree any DCFC perk should be kWh limited. Unlimited sessions are super bad for DCFC users. Sounds like EA need to add battery storage ASAP to buffer power draw.

Better title: "Unlimited Free DC Fast Charging is Nearing the End for Ioniq 5 Owners who bought 2 years ago!" I just bought mine, so the end is not near.

One issue we have out west is that federal policy is made by east-coast centric thinking. The Fed requirement of a DC fast charging station every 50 miles on interstates does not make sense in the west where it can easily be more than 80 miles between even small towns. For example in October I took a 2,000 mile + roadtrip from the Seattle area to Boulder, CO and back to see my 91yo mother. But on that trip I had to take the slower, longer route via I-70 in Colorado instead of the more direct I-80 route via Wyoming. There are no DC fast chargers except Tesla between Evanston, WY and Rawlings, WY - a 212 mile stretch. With temps in the high 30's I was not willing to risk trying to make that distance. There is a fully built but not commissioned EA station in Rock Springs that has been sitting there since August waiting on permitting. The congressional delegation in WY is fighting the 50 mile requirement and holding up deployment until that policy is changed. Meanwhile us early adopters are caught in the middle.

I wonder if the pulling to much energy issue is impacting Richmond, VA location. For months, all the units have been downgraded to either 150kW or 50kW. Took so long to charge that EA charged us for the first time because we had to sit past 20 minutes.

Totally agree my station close to home had 2 broken charges for 2 months it's on i20 between Atlanta and Birmingham. Only charger along the route. It's been packed especially with rude volt owners that plug into a 350 for almost 2 hrs while a 150 is open. When they finally restored the chargers they all now appear to be limited to 77kw. Was very irritating especially after putting into battery condition mode to get there

I totally charge at home and charge at EA when I'm on the road which is maybe 3 times a year.

I went from South Carolina to Maryland up I81 and only had 1 wait for about 20 minutes (for the entire trip coming and going). It added about an hour to the trip ( 3 stops about 20 minutes a stop) but to be honest, I would have made 2 or 3 stops anyway for food and fuel. I use the Autel home charger most of the time and its great.

What I do when I travel is wake up at 4 AM to charge, so I don't have to wait. Thank you for the information.

Great channel. I'm a happy subscriber. Just want to let you know that in the SF Bay Area, daytime household electric rates are at or near the $0.48/kWh mark. I added an L2 charger at home and it is SO CONVENIENT! Luckily I was able to invest in a solar system so I get a big help from that but of course everyone isn't in the same situation. It's not actually "much cheaper" at those rates for some of us. To be fair, I'm still saving THOUSANDS annually on "fuel" to get where I'm going, and I basically never wait in line. 🙂

I’m in south Florida just bought Ioniq 5 SEL same color as yours so far I’m doing good charging in the EA dc charging close to home and level 1 charging at the garage. I decide to wait to install the level 2 because is expensive so I’m taking advantage for the 2 years EA free charging in the meantime. If the things going pack and busy lines later as you said I hen I will consider installing level 2.
@mousepad3000

The nearest EA to my house is about 45 minutes away and I'd pay about $10 in tolls to get there and back, so the loss of free charging isn't much of an issue for me. I charge almost exclusively L2 in my garage.
