Re. the Apple parts pairing segment, it is looking like parts that are tied to activation locked accounts will not be able to be paired up to a new device to restore full functionality. It seems very unlikely that they will stop the device from functioning altogether, as some sources have been suggesting. Basically if you use an activation locked display it will show as an unknown part in settings, and will not have TrueTone functionality. My big issue with this is their unwillingness to draw a distinction between "Activation lock" and "Lost mode". Phones are incredibly frequently abandoned without their data being wiped, which permanently renders them a brick, and now extends to limiting functionality on parts taken from them. I would have loved this change if it were only for parts that came from a "Lost mode" device, but Apple is unwilling to do the right thing here (as is common). One last note is that they are still (at this stage) not allowing pairing of a new front camera assembly, which is the part of the Face ID system that I see fail most often as it is very fragile. The other piece, a few sensors that are screwed to the screen assembly, still cannot be replaced ($10 part) without also replacing the display (several hundred $ part) with one that is paired to that specific sensor. TLDR; cannot reasonably repair Face ID for no good reason. Huge L in my eyes, the most important piece of functionality we could have potentially seen restorable has been kept intentionally locked down.
@LosFarmosCTLКүн бұрын
totally agree with you on the entire parts pairing shit they are pulling and the general unavailability and missing resources for repairing your own damn device but I think the activation lock does make sense, most people just don’t even know about lost mode and if the chance is there that a stolen phone might not be manually locked by the previous owner, the incentive to steal them remains activation lock already managed to make iphones worthless for thieves other than selling scrap parts, extending that to the parts themselves is something that I cannot be against
@AbradeКүн бұрын
@@LosFarmosCTL I appreciate the sentiment however I respectfully disagree with that. 1. Most people who have an apple device stolen will quickly learn about lost mode after they try to locate their device, do any amount of searching/asking people what to do if your phone gets stolen. If you place a report with the police, they will tell you to try find it via the find my app, and to put it in lost mode. 2. I process large quantities of phones that have been abandoned at recycling centres, sold off from business where employees have left their accounts on them, carrier trade-in phones with accounts left on them, lost & found auctions, deceased estate, insurance claim auctions etc. etc. etc. I refuse to believe that stolen devices make up any more than a tiny, insignificant fraction of devices that have FMI enabled but are not set to lost mode. The vast majority are abandoned/forgotten devices. 3. This update fails to stop phones being thieved for the purpose of parts, you can still use the parts just fine even when activation locked and in lost mode. Currently they also pair up just fine, but that is surely a bug that will be patched. Even when the system is working properly, it will prevent pairing of parts to restore battery health readings and True Tone, but the parts will still work exactly the same as they did pre-iOS 18.

Isn’t it fascinating how Apple continues to play the game of catch-up while pretending to lead the pack? With iOS 18, they’ve rolled out features that Android users have been enjoying for years, yet the fanfare is deafening. The RCS support is a nice touch, but let’s not kid ourselves-this is just Apple trying to save face in a world where they’re no longer the trendsetters. And don’t even get me started on AMD’s identity crisis! Shifting focus to data centers while neglecting gamers is like a chef abandoning their kitchen to chase after food critics. It’s a recipe for disaster!
@HerbaMachinaКүн бұрын
AMD isn't having an identity crisis, all hardware manufactures are datacenter first manufactures, because they're the largest buyers of hardware, why would you not want to sell to the market with the highest demand and largest pockets?
@stitchfinger7678Күн бұрын
@@HerbaMachina Okay but the procurement officers don't give a fuck about "goodwill" or how AMD treats users. Customers do. If your job is to buy CPUs and shut up, you really don't care who you're buying them from.

I used to have this perception that iOS was the perfect example of a phone's operating system, until you actually try and realize it's actually a broken system that was left behind Android years ago. They keep adding things to the Dynamic Island but nothing substitutes a notification bar like Android has, so you end up not even realizing you got new notifications until you go the home screen and see a number next to an app. The gesture navigation are undeveloped and frustrating to use, forcing you to close out the app and start over because there is no back swipe on many apps.

The only positive thing from Apple in ages, stolen iPhone parts now have activation lock but that can be unlocked if you have genuinely bought that part from a damaged phone. Another annoyance for those goddamn thiefs.

Android users will never understand that we Apple users KNOW that Android phones get the crap first, but you also get a bunch of shi* that is useless and no one ever uses...Apple just takes the good stuff, makes it better and then we get the polished product. SO hey, we couldn't live with such nice phones without all you Android test subjects, so thanks!!!!
