To increase your zigbee range, put some zigbee lights or other mains powered zigbee devices in between. The mains powered devices will create a mesh that your battery devices will talk through.

Nice. I use a similar method. During normal hours I get a notification if my Garage door is open longer than 30 minutes. If it's after midnight. It'll close it automatically (With a 5 minute warning notification).
