how this 68 was able to move around, im not sure. That's quite the testament to the old ford 300. so... thoughts on making a 4 barrel to 1 barrel adapter and seeing what happens? the datalog stuff has ruined me where I just want to do weird things now and see how it works out. Id be lying if I said we didn't have some weird lawnmower carb level irons in the fire.

It would be interesting to see what this old six would do with a VW type 1 carb. I have two carbed rigs that I would put CarbCheaters on one being a 79 Toyota pickup. Maybe even try a lawnmower carb on it... I know of some crazy guy that did it on a Ford V8... so why not?

Donaldson filters are top tier filters... heavy duty commercial grade...they have been around for many many years... like early 1900's In-fact, Frank Donaldson invented the air intake filter while repairing a tractor in Utah. The business was incorporated in 1915 by Donaldson, his parents and his siblings as Donaldson Company Inc.

I was so wrapped up into this video when it ended I said, are you kidding me, I didn't want to wait for the next installment. Work for an overhead door company that had all Ford trucks, I started off with an 81 F-250 with a six. If you didn't guess working on overhead doors you carry around a lot of equipment and weight. I was doing service work so that thing never stop moving. At the end of this life that had 340,000 beat on miles, the only reason it had to be retired was one of the mechanics rolled it drunk one night. Evidently a good engine 👍 somewheres around 2001 I bought an F-350 with a 300 inline 6 with around 250,000 and you couldn't even hear it run. I love your content and the amount of knowledge that you share. Keep up the great work and the awesome videos 👍✌️🇺🇲

The ZDDP thing is definitely a bit of an urban legend. There's certainly a kernel of truth in there, but the story I heard from a guy who used to work in the auto supply chain when zinc was removed from oils was this: Around the time when zinc was removed, the oil companies were testing other additives/synthetic properties to achieve the same protection. At the same time, there was some large batch of soft cam blanks imported/manufactured, so the new formula oil coupled with bad cams right from the factory, came together to create a perfect storm, and the lack of ZDDP was blamed. I also don't run high zinc oil, or any zinc in my old flat tappets. I just make sure to run full synthetic, and I've had no issues. Basically once you run high zinc oil/moly on your flat tappet cam during break in, the surface will be sufficiently work hardened that you don't need anything more than a modern, full synthetic oil.

An Offenhauser 4bbl intake, 450cfm vac sec carb, split headers with scavenging pairs that Y into a single 2.5-3" exhaust and maybe a bit more camshaft would make that sucker a beast. I wish someone made a cross flow aluminum head similar to a 706/862 LS or 2V Cleveland head for 300s. Other than that, a 2.73-3.08 axle ratio (or taller)would probably be nice, would run like 3.73-4.10 gears with a 25% OD 5th in 4th and that granny 1st would still get off the line really well if not better because the gear would be more useful. A nice tall narrow tire like a 255/85r16 would help out a lot too. I used a set of ST255/85r16s on my F250 because they were only $70 each new shipped off eBay, USA made, radial, 12ply, heavy payload, super thick and stiff sidewalls, nice low rolling resistance tread pattern, tall and narrow. I averaged 13mpg hwy from DFW Texas to Middle Tennessee towing a 6000lb trailer with a car with 1500lbs in the truck bed under a topper cruising 70mph in 4th gear with a roller cam 351w ZF5 S47 3.55 axle ratio with those tires, 50psi front and 70psi rear pressure. Hope this isn’t a duplicate comment… To set timing there are three important numbers 1) static timing w/o vacuum connected to the distributor (plug the line), 2) the amount of vacuum timing advance, 3) mechanical advance and curve (without vacuum connected), and 4) the total advance at a specific rpm. Static Timing: Disconnect the vacuum line from the distributor and plug the line. Check timing at hot idle. This will be very close or at the static timing. Vacuum Advance: Reconnect the vacuum line and observe the timing with the timing light. It should advance as tyke RPM is slowly advanced but below where the mechanical advance kicks in. There is a specific amount but the important thing is that the timing advances with slight rpm increases (usually below 1500). If not then the internal diaphragm is leaking and must be replaced. A failed diaphragm will usually have a rough or unsteady idle. Note that some distributors have a double diaphragm (and two vacuum lines) as those distributors will either advance or retard ignition as required for emissions compliance. Mechanical Advance: Inside the distributor there is a mechanism with weights and springs that act to internally move the rotor forward and advance the timing with RPM. The mechanical timing plus static timing will always be the maximum timing advance. There is a spec for total timing to be set by a specific RPM. A stuck or faulty mechanical timing mechanism will prevent full mechanical advance and prevent full power at higher rpm. I have an old school machine that you mount your distributor in and it spins the distributor and gives you the advance curves as well as noting any distributor issues when running. I’ve rebuilt distributors and what I’ve learned is that electronic spark control plus knock sensors are way better for spark control, but the old system works fine if you understand it, the parts are mechanically sound, and timing is set to spec.
@ThunderHead289
@ThunderHead289 Жыл бұрын
I prefer old-school ignition - knock sensors (piezo sensors) can only be tuned for a certain harmonic range, typically heavy load is largely premapped - and often on injection super safe. Take the late 2000s crown Victoria, any 4.6 mustang, and so on - timing drops to 6 degrees at hard throttle, it's that way for a huge safety margin but left a lot of power on the table.

I would have changed the air filter for sure, but I would also have sprayed the carburetor air-bleed(s) with Carb & Choke cleaner to get the varnish build-up out of them. The air bleeds if clogged will create a siphon and fuel will keep dripping down the inside of the carburetor causing a flooding condition. Many a rich, poor idle cured that way! I was cringing when your friend was rotating that HEI Distributor by the top. He would have found out for sure if a wire was bad at the cap terminal! That too (having an HEI Distributor by GM) was the first clue that the timing could be in need of adjustment. I hope once the carb is cleaned up, that we can see the tuner kit in action. Great video Luke!

Zinc (and oil in general) is such a contentious subject. What's odd is that there are so many wildly varying opinions, but something I notice is that if you ask oil manufacturers or even OEMs, they say its not necessary. Its only when you ask aftermarket companies making these failure prone lifters that they suddenly say zinc is the issue. Almost like they would like to offload some or most of the blame of lifter failures on the oil instead of their own quality issues. Same with cam break ins. Higher spring pressures and stuff, sure, but you think every flat tappet cam since their invention was ran at 2000rpm for 20 minutes before they were shipped off to dealers?

Have an 89 bronco with a 300 6 had computer ghosts scraped the efi crap ,went back to a carb no more problems, sure am interested in your tuner to see what it'll do. Thanks for your videos will be waiting for part 2

My daily is a 91 f150 300 6 that I'm always using to haul scrap and other heavy stuff with. That engine will treat you very good if you give it just a little maintenance. One other thing, 5w-30 or 10w-30 is what they like for oil. 15w-40 is for if you spin a main bearing at 500k miles and want to keep driving it.

Speaking of Vacuum Gauge, I used mine for the first time, really helped, still gotta tweak the fuel/air mixture a bit (once this snow goes away) but got the car running the way I needed. Still watching the old video's for the tips at least when it comes to Edlebrock's. Good to see you out here again.

Mike's carburetor does some very good carter yf videos. That ignition timing was pretty insane lol I think a video on vacuum advance tuning would do very well. I want to make one but im sure you can do it much better. I watch my vacuum and rpm at cruise then mimic it by using a vacuum pump and having someone hold it at the cruising rpm then see what my timing is. I like finding a long straight slight upgrade and keep adding vacuum to the canister till it starts to not respond or breaks up. Then let's say it likes 50 degrees at cruise then adjust the vacuum canister till you get 50 degrees of timing with cruising vacuum and rpm

Donaldsons are great filters! I used to make them, they are made by caterpillar in the same factory and are essentially the same filter as caterpillar marine oil or fuel filters.

Donaldson (AKA Torit) is a big player in industrial dust collection so making or distributing other filters is a natural extension of the business.

.....other than the "carb cheater"..... it's like a reenactment of what I've been dealing with on my '78, 300-6. Fuel boiled-out when the float stuck (pin-hole, with gas inside). Runs well after swappin-out the float and replacing the needle & seat..unless climbing a hill. Sounds like a dozen kids banging on an anvil with ball-peen hammers.....😢🥴 Thank ya kindly for another dose of Carb-Capers...!!!

As soon as I read "immortal engine" I already know we're dealing with a 300 inline 6. I love mine. Although now I feel convicted because I haven't even looked at the air filter in about 5 years 😂 guess i should do that 😬

That 300 Six is a beast of a motor, I don't know if you want to put a bigger carb on that old girl. I think check things with a CarbCheater on the stock carb then work from there.

I think the zinc additive is more for engines from the pre smog era back when there was lead in the petrol. my brother has my grandpa's old 1955 ford f100 with a 272 y block and its been using regular valvoline conventinal oil 10 w 30 and its been running like a top the whole time with the same engine. it had the head rebuilt like 20 years ago but its been a great truck. it has over 250k miles on it. thats amazing for a 50's motor!

Enjoying this series, revival and see how well the new device you created can help make it run. Love the idea of making an old car run better even though your trying to keep it mostly original.

Thanks for noting about the zinc! i work on newer cars professionally, and all the engines i work on are dual over head cams, and all of those lifters are flat tappet, as far as i can tell, additive tech has evolved, and zinc has been replaced with a combination of other additives and different base oils do the same job or possibly better, but i dont know for sure

Direct acting flat tappet buckets have a fairly easy life since their surface area is large and the load is low which means much lower contact pressure compared to pushrod camshafts.

Donaldson are a very good filter, been around a long time but normally used in industrial applications, have equipment, generators, 18 wheelers and some aircraft. I don’t use zinc additives normally, but most the stuff I work on is roller rocker. Great video.
