IOWA NORTHERN AND CN MEET AT THE CEDAR FALLS JUNCTION! L571/L570 AND EJ&E POWER. DRONE VIEWS!

08/13/2024 Cedar Falls, IA. The Iowa Northern is seen here waiting at the Cedar Falls Junction for the light. The L571 was allowed to pass first on it's way West before the IANR took it's turn. Shortly after these catches I caught the CN L570 East bound on it's way back to Waterloo. IA. This old EJ&E SD38 is still hard at it around the CN's Waterloo Yard!

Canadian National train #L571 looked impressive as it snaked along the Cedar River on its way west from Cedar Falls, Iowa and passed the Iowa Northern train that was waiting at Cedar Junction to proceed east to Waterloo, Iowa. Once the Iowa Northern train obtained permission to enter the Canadian National mainline, it moved quickly on its way to its destination. That was a nice catch of Canadian National train #L570 on its way to the Canadian National yard in Waterloo, Iowa. It was good to see the former Elgin, Joliet & Eastern SD38-2 working at the Canadian National yard in Waterloo, Iowa. There may be a sister unit working at Kirk Yard in Gary, Indiana. I believe that is the first time an Iowa Northern train met a CN train there while you were photographing Just as the CN went by he notched the throttle and the sun hit the exhaust just right. Finally that River level is down add one can actually see Islands and sandbars again plus the boat launch is back in business. To a degree I was surprised they let the IANR go through and that seemingly was the longest train I've ever seen come off their line. The CN has gotten better at letting the WSOR onto the main line at Rugby Jct or Waukesha especially since there are two passing sidings in between and sometimes they sat for hours for trains that weren't even close by. The CN eastbound I was half expecting to see a DPU looking at its length. It's sad to say but if an older EJ&E shop person saw the 667 they would weep as even their oldest power was kept much cleaner. Apparently the crews aren't abusing it and the Waterloo shops apparently give it a bit of TLC so hopefully that veteran can hang in there for a while. Not that they had any cars specially painted for them but it will be interesting to see if CN keeps any IANR freight cars or if they are leased they may be sent back. Presently there are a number of newer covered hoppers in-service on the WSOR. They also have a fair number of Center beam cars for lumber loading which load across the country and also a group of boxcars that are liked by the paper industry. Time will tell on both. As always good drone work and luckily the birds kept their distance

@paulbergen9114 Yes Paul, usually the CN leaves the Iowa Northern sitting there for a long time. I've seen tines where no trains were coming for an hour and they sit there. Things will probably change with the CN take over. I'd like to catch another train with the boat down on the Iowa River again. The water is actually too low for that now. Big Boy coming through Montour in a couple weeks👍

@michaelmccoy-vo4mb Thanks Michael! The schedule does vary. Seems like the later in the week the later times. L571 leaves Waterloo usually between 3 and 5.

Evening Red Man I love the sound of that horn on the lead locomotive on the Iowa Northern. It sounded so haunting, like coming out of fog haunting. I have one like that on my channel. Great drone views once again. So would the Iowa Northern employees become CN employees now? What does red over flashing red signal mean btw? I've never seen that before
