@@asian123205 Bruce Lee was the founder of Jeet Kune Do, a martial art which he developed himself, but probably had a lot of Wing Chun as its foundation. Bruce Lee learned from Master Ip Man in his early teens; my dad was at Ip Man's school in Hong Kong at the same time that Bruce was also a student there :)

Because they really wanted to see who had the most authentic Wing Chun to teach, this is why every basic component of Wing Chun was emphasized in this battle. The first stick fight was to assess who had the better "six and a half point pole" technique of Wing Chun The knife fight was to assess "butterfly knives" technique which is also Wing Chun. When they finally clashed hands, many techniques of Wing Chun were specially emphasized too like the fast chain punches, and even Chi Sao which means sticky hands emphasized in 8:19 and 9:00. They even emphasized the Biu Jee technique which is what Cheung used to blind Ip Man in one eye, and the one inch punch made famous by Bruce Lee but is actually Wing Chun based. This fight placed more special emphasis on Wing Chun than any other I have seen

Ipman and cheung Tin Chi were equally matched..Cheung tin chi lost by one move. He was the most worthy opponent of All outside of Tyson Ipman was in a sense looking at a mirror. That's how equally matched they both were.

@@chaosrealmer3455 Tin Chi would have destroyed him. I think Tin Chi is just overall younger and wasn't suffering from cancer like Ip Man was during that fight. If we replayed this fight several times over, Cheung Tin Chi would likely win a few of those matches.

Last hit IpMan did was called one inch punch , same one he tought to Bruce Lee. In the long story short its a punch from distance 0-15cm and its purpose was to kill/finish your opponent. Imagine punch so strong that its force penetrates all the tissues and then dmaging the organs that were on the way

One Martial art, Two masters with different patterns. in other words: they studied and trained Wing Chun at the same school, but when they became masters, they perfected methods to their style of fighting.but if we look closely at 7:18, Ip man doesn't throw the knife because the other is unarmed, which is fair. but in reality he threw the knife as a sign that his opponent was taking the fight seriously but with some foul play. whereas ip man was just evaluating him.

His wife is sad or pissed off all the time because: - In general: Every time he gets in a fight, there's a possibility he's seriously injured or killed so she doesn't like that, but she knows that's his talent and passion. - Ip Man: She didn't like being bothered by the neighboring kung fu masters. Also, it introduced trouble to their household (along with broken furniture). She's tired of it. - Ip Man 2: Ip Man's students are kinda troublemakers and nearly get them kicked out of their apartment--also they don't always pay on time for the lessons. Ip Man's fight takes him away from the birth of their second son. Furthermore, he's fighting a guy who just killed one of the kung fu masters. - Ip Man 3: Ip Man is again in danger's way by interfering with Triad business and they even sent an assassin after him (and she was caught in the fray). Besides that, she gets diagnosed with cancer and she knows (despite Ip Man letting Cheung Tin-chi pretty much take all the Wing Chun students so he can spend his time with her) that he needs to defend his honor. She gets a bad rap, but her heart is usually in the right place. If you like Cheung Tin-chi, he has a spin-off movie called Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.

This fight is between two disciples of wing Chun both taught by the same master, master ip refused too challenge him on many occasions only because his wife was dying of cancer so he decided too spend as much time as possible with her, meanwhile the other master was creating a name for himself claiming to be the grandmaster of wing Chun destroying other masters and saying master IP's style of wing Chun isn't authentic and that he doesn't have what it takes, that all changes when ipmans wife wanted him to fight and practice again one last time and master Ip accepted the challenge

The last form is empty-hand. A little backstory: so the other Wing Chun guy claims that he's the real deal Wing Chun master and he should've been the one that leads the Wing Chun kung fu, both his dojo and ip man's has been confronted eachother. This is the final battle between Wing Chun masters to settles everything, including whose dojo will be the official Wing Chun dojo. Wing Chun is actually an old Chinese martial arts. It means it passed through time, it also means it was used as military combat skills at some points, which is why they also uses weaponry like knifes and pole in this scene.

I am commenting after seeing the reactions and reading some of the other comments. Throwing the butterfly knife away when Tin was bare handed shows it is a skill fight or Honor fight, as opposed to knock,-down drag out. When Tin cut the arms off of the wooden dummy it showed emotional distraction--like frustrated...losing control. And even though eye gouge can be of the repertoir of Wing Chun it works, but also low-down move making a dis advantage he would not give to himself. Ip had the advantage and dropped to level playing field. I think as a story writing goes this shows Morality. If it was a fight to who leads the entire school for all Wing Chun everywhere, we see the guy of low morals, Win at any cost is lots of wins, but social loss, community loss, reputation losses--the game of Representing is bigger than what's right now and out in front of you...it is not taking the town, it is ruling the county. For decades. And not only fighting with loss of sight he did know Wing Chun and fighting how to play a disadvantage or what to do and come-out on top with a dis advantage. If the Three inch punch(No_Know how it got called one inch it is obviously three finger sections at about an inch a section), crippled Tin to where he could not stand, and if he could have used it anytime, it showed in the story Ip Man as a man of Nobel character and worthy to lead, versus someone excitable and gets to pull useful but scounrdral moves.-Ernie Moore Jr.

Quick thing about the final part where Ip Man closed his eyes: The other guy was more of a street fighter, so he had an instinct to pursue obvious advantages. We can see this in the other scenes in this movies, where this guy takes down random thugs a lot faster than Ip Man did. However, with the other guy being a bit rash, Ip Man was just able to predict the punches he was going to throw because they're both Wing Chun practitioners and to do the most damage, the other guy is going for Ip Man's head. If the other guy used something like grappling and grabbed Ip Man's arm or something, Ip Man probably would have lost.

Cheung Tin Chi claims that Ip man Wing Chun is fake and Cheung Tin Chi says that his Wing Chun is real. Basically Ip Man has been trained by 2 masters 1 from his hometown Fo Shan and the other master is from Hong Kong in the early 1900s

Not so much fake as "untraditional". Since Ip Man introduces some more untraditional things to Wing Chun, like a lot of footwork, and some of the armwork (from Leung Bik in the first Ip Man movie [A Legend is Born]), Cheung is claiming Ip's Wing Chun perverts the art because it was, in a way, upgraded.

Wing chun is a martial art of the crane. First rods were to represent the legs of the crane where they in the wild use for fights and defense by raising one up horizontally. Second was the wings of the crane as the twin knives and open palm hands. They represented the wings of cranes use to push and hit their opponent. This art is believed to be one of the last powerful animism qing gong(gong fu) left to practice. Bruce Lee actually came to Ip man, to learn "the speed" as the monkey spirit (as marial arts) needed certain speed. I think he used this martial arts teachings to create his own monkey style.
