Done thousands over 14 years and they are always powered on and battery connected. It shouldn’t be done on an iPhone but iPad seem to have no issue as long as you know what you are doing. I do iPhone 14 and 14 plus with powered on and battery connected as well since they have a removable backs most are shattered and can not be removed to unplug the battery. Don’t screw around inside with a metal tool though.

Fixed it! I hadn't disconnected the battery, which was causing the issues. Disconnected the screen, put a spudger under the battery overnight, and hey presto! it worked.

If the device doesn’t turn back on after repair due to not disconnecting the battery do a hard reset by pressing volume up then volume down and then press and hold power until the Apple symbol comes up. Your done. Always clean the mating surface with isopropyl alcohol before reinstalling to guarantee that you get all the tiny glass pieces you might leave with the spudger to avoid cracking the new screen.
