One word: schools. Schools already have Apple Pencil 1’s and want non-laminated displays due to repairability. It costs $15 to replace the glass while it costs $150 to replace a laminated screen. Think of all the young students who abuse their iPads and how often the glass breaks. I would point out there’s no place to put an Apple Pencil 2 since all four sides are spoken for. You can’t put it on the bottom and relocate the pins. Just think of a Magic Keyboard. The gap is small enough to barely put a finger in there. Think how awkward it would be to put a Pencil there. Also, the Magic Keyboard could not close with a Pencil in place. Essentially, neither Pencil works well with this iPad, so Apple went with the solution that will please schools, who won’t have to re-buy Apple Pencils.

Spending that much money for the full setup with the keyboard and a sensible amount of storage - for almost everyone surely a refurbished M1 Macbook Air is a much better proposition? Next time I buy an iPad it will be from the refurbished store I am sure.

That's the perfect iPad for me. Keep in mind not all the people change their devices year to year. The last iPad I bought was an iPad Air 2 in 2014. And I'm still writing this comment on it, because my main purpose of it's existence was watching KZbin and Netflix. Sometimes some web browsing and professionally I used it for Teams calls and also for apps for live sound mixing consoles like A&H dLive or SQ. I did not need anything else, and I would continue to use it if the battery would not become unreliable. My brother bought an iPad Air with the M2 chip and I loved it but could not justify the price on such low usage and since I know I won't use the Apple Pencil at all the 10th gen is perfect for my upgrade as it looks the same as the Air (which I love the look over the 9th gen by ba huge mile) and the camera in the middle is a big deal for me for the Teams meetings as I will look more naturally. So yeah I do get it in the year by year comparison it's a weird device, but for me it just ticks every single thing for a lower price than the Air. Keep in mind I used the 2014 till now with no issues for my usage so even if I get 6 years out of the 10th gen that's ok for me. So IMO there is a market for this product. I know I will enjoy it! Hi mark, a student here…and I went for the 10th gen over the 9th because of the modernised design, type c charging, better speakers, better processors, better cameras and camera placement…yes Apple Pencil support was kind of a bummer but for most students, writing down notes wil a regular 3rd party stylus with usb-c will be good enough…if you’re an artist then yes the air would be a better option because of the screen and Apple Pencil 2 support…but as a student…who needs an iPad for study and media consumption…I think this would be good enough…I guess the prices are a bit too high at the moment but I guess you’ll have to pay a premium for the features mentioned above…and this iPad is here to stay and it will go down in price eventually…I mean you can get a refurbed air 4 for the price but as a student on a budget…who’re going to get their first iPads…who would want to experience a “new ipad” would definitely have their eyes on it…Atleast that’s what happened with me…and I believe that this iPad has just enough features for a student to go through college and have some fun on it while doing so :)

I've just purchased an ipad 10th generation. My wife and I are 74 and our old ipad air 2 had some technical problems. We're not technically minded and just wanted a new iPad at a reasonable price. The new device is great and offers more than enough improvements over our old air 2.

I have to say, I've never understood the widespread dislike of the first generation Apple Pencil. I've always thought my pencil was a lovely device--maybe it's just because I don't have a second generation to compare it with. The charging method is clunky, sure, but that's hardly a dealbreaker when the pencil charges to full in about five or ten minutes anyway.

This iPad is there to encourage us to buy the iPad 9. This surely worked on me, I bought myself an iPad 9 with a Logitech keyboard case right after the event, and so far I’m very happy with it.

I had one from work back in March. It’s a University and I think they got it for £260. I already have a pencil gen 1 and the light and handy Apple SmartKeyboard case (for £55 and refurbed by Apple so it’s like new) both work with it. Like you, I recently got the Logitech Combo Touch for the basic iPad for about £95 in a deal. Annoyingly, I have the near identical Logitech Combo Touch for my personal iPad Pro 10.5. The keyboard part is identical but the back case is not. It is quite heavy but great quality and protective. The final thing to get is an anti reflective paper type cover which both reduces glare and makes writing great. I got a highly rated version from Amazon that came in a two pack for about £14. Think it is Iprokko. I like the Touch ID home button and can cope with a fraction of an inch less screen estate and, surprise, surprise, it’s easier to hold in landscape mode. So in summary, a refurbished or second hand iPad Pro 10.5 knocks spots off the new iPad as it has pro motion, laminated screen, superb 4 speaker stereo, rounded edges…like hands have….a rear flash and can film in 4K. The last gen iPad is nearly as good. The new one is for people who like pretty colours, have more money than sense, and really should invest in a much better M1 MacBook Air and a second hand iPad either Gen 8 or 9. Or it’s for teenagers and seniors who just need a pretty but basic tool.

For me this exists just for people who want “an iPad” and would normally buy the basic model, and finally provides a compelling reason to upgrade from a previous model due to the “all screen” redesign. The iPad 9 still exists for a while to take the edge off the fact apple is increasing the entry price into the ipad world to £500

I want an iPad with USB c, that's it. My Dad has an iPad Pro 4th Gen, and compared to what I will be getting soon and our usage cases, there's little to no differences. I don't need a pencil, keyboard, or laminated display. I want a 4k Apple Unix OS tablet that will last a long time with USB c.

Wow, the 256GB non-cellular 10th Gen with a folio keyboard is over £950! WTAF! That is insane! Apple refurb iPad Pro 11" non-cellular 256GB (2nd Gen) £539; Logitech folio case with trackpad and Smart Connector £139 on Amazon, total £678! You would have to be out of your tiny mind to go for the 10th gen over that! You could get cellular, a pencil 2 and a paperlike screen protector as well and it would still be way cheaper!

Here’s the thing though. You’re talking a brand new iPad versus a 2 year old used iPad. Of course there’s gonna be a price difference. And you’re adding on an Apple branded folio keyboard as opposed to a logitech folio. You’re comparing apples and oranges. This iPad is meant for someone who wants something new in the new design and it isn’t meant to replace your laptop. It isn’t meant for artists. That’s why I don’t believe the keyboard and apple pencil controversies are that big of a deal. It’s not really made to use those. Get a logitech case. Get a logitech crayon. Stop being unfair and comparing apples to oranges.

If you are like me and use an iPad as a combo entertainment/work device, this is a great option. The keyboard folio and new upgrades such as the 10.9” screen and landscape camera make it a really nice Chromebook-style laptop alternative for weekend trips where you need to do some stuff but nothing crazy, and the new speaker arrangement and kickstand make converting from work to play very easy compared to iPad 9 (or even the Air or Pro using Magic Keyboard). My current iPad is the mini 6 which primarily sits on my desk while I’m working and gets controlled via Universal Control. I do most of my client communication on it or look at PDF or excel documents (I’m an accountant so lots of that). I don’t really need the pencil which honestly gets in the way more than it offers benefit and the larger screen would be nice. Therefore, I am likely to actually do a lateral switch from mini 6 to iPad 10th gen because of the aforementioned reasons. I don’t need more than 64gb and the upgrades available with the Air don’t seem worth it to me considering if I really need to do work on the go I’m bringing my MacBook

The 10th gen makes no sense. The ipad 9th gen with Logitech Combo Touch is a much better value. I would get the Logitech Combo touch over Apples combo cases for any of the iPads. It provides better protection and is cheaper. You will probably be able to get the 9th gen on sale for $259 next month. Then buy the Logitech combo touch ($150) and your still under the price of the 10th gen...

Is it good for students? The charging of the apple pencil is not a main issue to me, but i do want the note writing experience to be accurate and without delay. Could the small gap of the display be a problem for me?

I think the Apple Pencil issue is down to them moving the front camera. Can’t stick the magnets up there whilst the camera is there can they. Makes you wonder how they’ll sort this for the Pro iPads when they get around to moving those cameras too.

Not mine, but the best I heard was this was specifically for the Education and Commercial markets that use these tablets all over the place. I would be curious what the bulk price (read: hundreds to thousands per order) looks like. It explains the non laminate screen (cheap repair) and the pencil 1 support. They would either have an install base of pencil 1s or, more likely, pencil 1 spec 3rd party styluses.

What speed is the usb c for file transfer? All the complaints are about how lightning is usb2 speed, so slow.

I just purchased a new iPad for my mom earlier this month after she broke her 3rd gen iPad Air. A couple of days after I bought her a 5th gen m1 iPad Air, Apple released the new 10th gen base iPad. I really don’t get who the new iPad is for. If you just want a basic tablet, get the 9th gen iPad. If you need more features, get the Air. It’s totally worth it.

Spot on. I’m sure your mum is very happy with the latest Air. The price has been hiked by a lot in the U.K. apart from John Lewis. Get an Air from their with a 2 year guarantee. Much better VFM. As for the M2 Pros, other than a proximity thing with a pencil and Pro Res editing, grab an M1 very quickly and save hundreds of pounds. Think the saving is so much it will fund a Magic Keyboard!

I got the air 5 to replace my 9th gen ipad as i was fed up with the 1st gen pencil. Have now got the 2nd gen pencil and the Logitech Combo Touch keyboard case. Highly recommend.

Well, I might buy one. I am a novelist, and I’m looking for a laptop replacement for when I travel. I want something that I can do light writing on, email, etc. My 2017 MacBook Air just feels cumbersome. Your videos have been tremendously helpful in helping me to narrow down on an iPad as an option for a laptop replacement. I was leaning toward the iPad Air with the Magic Keyboard, but after watching your comparison video I’m now leaning toward the 10th Gen iPad. The keyboard folio, for my uses, is an overwhelming benefit. Being able to disconnect the keyboard while still leaving the iPad protected if I set it down is big, but the row of function keys and larger track pad is the game changer. $800 for a laptop replacement is fine with me. Having said that, I’m still frustrated. I’ve never used the Apple Pencil and maybe I never will. But I resent buying something that I feel like is already outdated. I’d like the option of using the Apple Pencil 2 if I wanted to, and I also think the M1 chip is the future for apple. If the keyboard folio was available for the iPad Air, it wouldn’t be a question. Do you think apple will make the keyboard folio for the iPad Air?

My old iPad died and though I've got a 12.9" Pro for my "main" use, I always kept one by my bedside table. I wanted to new, cheap iPad to replace it and this looks like it'll fit the bill. It might have all the bells and whistles of some of the more expensive models, but it's got everything I need (and want) for what I intend to use it for.

Interesting how Apple and Jony Ive got a lot of stick for the original method of charging, because it looked daft. But if you were out, sketching in a cafe, you could always charge it - nothing else required, just the two items you have there (iPad and pencil) - people at the time said it should have been female lightning so it could change with a lightning cable (which you'd have left at home!) - Now, we need four things with us to charge the pencil! Nuts. Maybe the lollypop charging wasn't so crazy.

Some comments I’ve heard I think is true in that this is the first step in getting rid of the 11in Pro. The future lineup will be this with the iPhone chip in it, Air with an M series but paired down, mini with the small form, and 12.9in Pro and possibly an even larger 14 or 15in Pro option. I just find this one at the moment to be such a miss and maybe it was already into production and they couldn’t punt it but also cost got driven up because if it came in at $399 would probably be a lot easier to justify and make sense.

Not enough change for me and the right amount of expense to bypass completely. Go up to the Air/Mini or go for the 9th Gen for the normal user. Anyone who needs this for more would go for the Pro in my opinion. I’m looking for an IPad to use instead of my 2013 MacBook (I know, how old!) and can’t decide between the 9th Gen and the Air for my usage. It definitely won’t be the 10th gen although they will still probably sell shed loads.

The Apple iPad range is a complete mess: 1. They don't even include the stupid Apple Pencil 1 dongle in the box (£10 extra) even though the price has increased by £130! 2. They won't let you use the Apple Pencil 2 because they might have to put the magnets off-centre because of the webcam - who gives a flying fig? 3. Why does this keyboard have function keys and yet the ones for the iPad Pros don't? 4. The cost of the keyboard (that will only work with this new iPad) is ridiculous at £279. 😳 Hunt down an 11" iPad Pro M1 from 2021 (3rd Gen) on eBay and you'll get Apple Pencil 2 compatibility, a laminated Pro-Motion (120Hz) display, base model with 128GB storage rather than 64GB, better cameras, 4 speakers rather than 2, USB-C with support for Thunderbolt and Face ID rather than Touch ID. Job done! 🤩

This iPad is for a consumer that wants a modern looking laptop replacement under warranty for light computing. In the US it comes out to be about $750 (Base spec plus keyboard) where the MacBook Air starts at $1000. With educational pricing it drops to $650 and $850 respectively. If they want a pencil down the line they can get a 3rd party option with USB-C for about $30 on Amazon. If you don’t care about warranty the obvious choice is a used 2018 iPad Pro or if you must have external display support, one of the M1 iPads.

I think the new changes are nice to have (the new folio & the landscape camera), but they feel quite poorly implemented. It feels like apple know that these are features that people actually want, but they have to implement some hardware limitations (1st gen pencil support, the exclusive keyboard folio that doesn’t work with any other ipads) so that this “base” ipad doesn’t get too good to prevent people from getting the higher end ipads. It is just a very weird mix of good and bad things combining into a weird products that doesn’t really have a clear target demographic. It feels like a transitional phase product that has new features that will eventually be in the higher end models, and now they are just trying to squeeze more profits out of the (now 4 yo) ipad design which was first introduced in 2018. Unless you are someone that doesn’t want a laptop, doesn’t take digital notes or do any digital illustration, specially want an IPAD for doing basic internet work and media consumption. But in that case, older ipads (e.g. the 2018 ipad pro, ipad air 4) will be more value for money. They are still fully capable and fast, with full support of the latest ipad accessories ecosystem. This is a real one to skip. No one should really get one.

I’ve had the first gen Apple Pencil 2 year. I still have the cap and I use it to draw on my iPad. It is almost perfect. If the Apple Pencil 2 worked on my iPad Air I would have gotten it but it doesn’t work.

This is definitely for students, and those who want to upgrade because now you get the benefits of the newer iPads but don’t have to spend the extra money, over $500 plus + the gen 2 pencil. We can upgrade for less, I think it’s was a great gift from Apple to those who don’t want to spend the extra money!

I chose the 10th Gen over the 9th because of the screen size, it’s so much neater and larger without the doppy home button. I have zero need for an Apple Pencil and much rather use a keyboard with it. Here’s a tip, forget about buying an apple keyboard, go for a third party one like Momax, they have one for £50, designed for IPad Air 4 & 5, Pro 11 which will fit perfectly on the iPad 10 Gen. Sure the keyboard case isn’t white and the keyboard is not detachable from the rest of the case but for £50 can’t complain at all. I have personally used other Momax products before and it’s very good quality.

Looks like I may be one of the few who thought perfect for me... I'm a working student living in SAE so got one for 355 quid (64gb), already have a pencil 1 ( and didn't want to buy a new one), and do lots of online zoom meetings (so needed the centre camera). So as a penny pinching online student it seemed best one for me, although I agree is strange set of decisions by apple..

Honestly the only person i could think this iPad is for is either 1. an entry to iPads that aren't drawing anything or just genuinely don't need the Apple Pencil. I myself have hardly ever used it or needed to use it. (Transferring to notetaking on a tablet recently so maybe that'll change. or 2. Kids that want a bigger screen (parents who don't care to buy something that expensive as well) than the iPad mini 6...I guess???

Of course one does not have to buy all Apple accessories - wait for 3rd party products to come out and save a fortune. Functionality over appearance = save ££. Price of iPad is still an odd one though - do you drop to iPad Gen 9 or up to Air?

Buy according to your needs. If you need an iPad for your five year old, get the cheapest one. But, if you need one for any kind of productivity, figure on spending in the neighborhood of $800-$1100 and forget everything in between. You can then keep your iPad for 4-5 years.

If you’re unhappy with the apple pencil thing, get a logitech crayon. This iPad wasn’t meant for artists. It’s meant for people who will be doing very light things with the apple pencil in the first place. The logitech crayon is only $70 and you don’t need a dongle, just a cord. They couldn’t do the horizontal camera and the 2nd gen apple pencil.

I guess it’s for people like me who don’t want the use of the Apple pencils, and not use it as a work instrument essentially. Updated base level iPad, for typing homework, and other more domestic activities, such as app gaming, web browsing and streaming so to speak. I currently own the iPad Air 2, so to me, the 10 could be worth the update for my needs.

Thanks for a true objective review! I use my iPad Pro as a drawing pad. Apple Pencil 2 and Procreate are an art nerd’s dream-come-true. This 10th gen iPad should only be considered by itself and the Folio keyboard. Apple Pencil 1 with a Lightning adapter on a non-laminated display is a joke at the most absurd level. BTW, I was wondering how Steve Jobs would react to the expanded product lines at Apple. He brutally canceled a ton of products when he returned to the company. And since Jobs’ death, all the product lines have grown significantly. Every single product line has at least one WTF product in it.

What about those of us who don’t use the pencil, don’t use a keyboard but need to upgrade their 6th gen iPad? We do a lot of FaceTime calls and mostly use our iPads for surfing etc. The bigger screen, better hardware is the draw here. My biggest complaint is the cost of memory. If they had started at 128gb this version would be great. I really enjoy your channel, your knowledge and analysis is excellent…..however I think it’s easy to sometimes miss out on just how many Apple customers are everyday non tech types. It’s a theme running through many of your contemporaries as well over this and other Apple products……however please don’t take my comments as negativity, I appreciate all your efforts to hold Apple to account over squeezing every dollar out of their customers…since 2009 when I moved to the Apple ecosystem I have converted many family and friends. The biggest selling point is the ease of the ecosystem…..all the Apple users I know and have converted don’t use the pencil or a keyboard or use iPads for work etc….Thanks for your outstanding videos, I hope this is constructive…

I think for those who don’t need to use the pencil and a keyboard would be better off with an iPad 9 or a refurbished iPad Air 4. The price of this iPad 10 is just way too high for what it is. The camera placement is a nice touch, but it couldn’t justify the amount of extra money that I am paying to get it - even a decent quality webcam won’t cost that much. I thought about getting the iPad 10 to replace my slightly faulty iPad mini 5 (I have Apple Pencil 1), but thing is, if I need to pay a few extra bucks for the adapter just because I need it to connect to the iPad, it’s a total waste of money. I seriously have no love for this device…

I have got a 6th gen iPad with an Apple Pencil 1. In order to buy the iPad Air I have to buy a €160 Apple Pencil 2 as well. So do you really believe that this isn’t a good option for a non wealthy guy like me? It is great upgrade from what I currently have and I don’t have to buy a new accessory.

This model gets the support of a lot of 3rd party accessories compared with posh ipads. Apple like pencil is only $15. Apply like Magic Keyboard is $20. My daughter picked this over the ipad air 5 even how much I try to convince her to get the latter. It was her first ipad, and she was so pleased with her first ipad experience.

If I’m being honest, I really only have two real issues with what Apple did here. First, the pricing is annoying. I don’t care that they changed the design and all. Apple has enough money that the small increase in cost wouldn’t really do anything to them. They should have left the price the same. My second issue is the fact that they didn’t make the camera change on the flippin Pro iPads and they didn’t give the other iPads that style of keyboard with the back plate and all! I’ve been wanting that for so long and they do it to the base iPad! Like WTF Apple?!?!?!?! Oh and the whole deal with the pencil is stupid. What they should have done from the very beginning was just make both pencils comparable with ALL iPads and then you can just chose which one you’d want to use. I never plugged my Gen 1 into my iPad anyway back when I had it. So I don’t mind having an adapter and plugging the pencil into the wall. It only takes like 3 minutes to charge anyway and lasts for like a week.

Price rises over time. I expected the price to change. However not this much. Over the years, ipads prices decrease. So this iPad price will decrease at some point. Plus back to school sales, will cut this price of the iPad. I remember seeing the mini 6 priced at 399 and the air 4 for 499. So the 10th gen will go on sale soon😊

Prices are rising, the cost of producing tech is rising. For the upgrades, the price was bound to raise. They can’t have the camera on all of them because it’s an either or. You can have the horizontal camera, or the magnetic wireless charging apple pencil. The case thing is valid though, it’d be nice to have that style case with the ipad pro. The main problem is the iPad pro has the smart connectors on the back of the tablet as opposed to the bottom like the iPad 10th gen.

Looks like they innovated by copying Samsung's S8 series of tablets... But cheaped the screen, and continued their stepped pricing scheme. My only problem with my S8+ is the lack of a back-lit keyboard on the Samsung Folio case

I think you might be onto something when you say a potential consumer, may be someone that doesn't want to use the Apple Pencil. I'd love an updated iPad, but nothing is talking to me at the moment. Maybe the iPad Air? The iPad mini, *i think* is too small for my requirements. The iPad Pro 12" too expensive (but great display), the iPad Pro (whatever inch it is now - lol - i can't keep up), might be a winner. So confused :-(

This product is probably for someone who wants a new design, who doesn't want to spend money on the iPad Pro, and doesn't care about the entry price for getting it, its expensive for what that is, I think you're better off with the iPad Pro though, you'll have everything on it, even though you probably won't use all of it, its just there. Too many hiccups on this thing though. I have the M1 iPad Pro, I won't be getting any new iPads anytime in the near future. Since Apple markets ProRaw and ProRes, why not just stick a proper camera sensor, like the ones that are in Canon cameras in the iPad. Plenty of space for that. Then you'll have professional level videos being shot out of that, then you could also edit them on a single device too, saves everyone time and money, need Final Cut Pro on that though to make this a reality.

I think that far from making charging the pencil look even stupider, one of the few saving graces of the dongle is that having the pencil charge at the end of a cable is aesthetically reasonable compared to sticking directly off an ipad. The pencil can go somewhere out of the way while charging and there’s a kind of nostalgic kiosk vibe to pen-on-a-cable. The dongle’s cost is ridiculous and it’s solving an entirely self-inflicted problem but it’s not an entirely terrible solution to that unnecessary problem.

I have no idea who this iPad is for either. I won’t be buying the new iPad 10th gen, not because I think it’s a bad tablet, but because I already have a 9th gen iPad that I’m happy with. I got a Logitech Crayon since I find the Apple Pencil Generation 1 to be overpriced and I think there are some genuine advantages to having the older design, such as a headphone jack. Sure, USB-C is great, but that is not enough for me to pay for an iPad that is so close in price to the Air 5. If I had any reason to upgrade past the base model 9th gen, I’d personally go for an Air or a Pro, due to Apple Pencil 2 support and the M1/2 chip. But for me that’s overkill anyway.

Mark: I was faced with this very same buying decision last weekend, and it was an easy one. I bought a 9th Gen iPad with 256 gbs. I don’t use the pencil and, as you described in your video, there was no reason to spend $150 US more on a tablet with debatable colors. The Retina display in this 9th gen iPad and the extra storage space (to carry my digital music) at a $150 savings was the selling point. Lastly, I’m with you. Apple isn’t in the habit of making these unforced errors in their product lines, but this 10th gen iPad was one indeed. Cheers from Central Texas… Wayne

I'm assuming it's made for children & education. This is why they retained the non fully laminated display, as kids are more likely to break the screens, and those screens are cheaper to replace. I'm not 100% sure on this next point, but if you look at the compatibility page for the Apple Pencils, the 2nd Gen is not compatible with any non fully laminated screens. If so, that explains why they've retained the 1st Gen pencil.

From what I recall, the only way to pair the first gen pencil was to stick it in the port of the iPad that you wanted to use it on, so again, without that adapter, you can't charge it or pair it.
