After so many reviews raving about the iPad Air I was relieved to see an appropriately critical review that also highlighted some of the key differences between it and the 10th gen iPad. The only place I might disagree with is that the M1 chipset will likely help the upgraded software run more efficiently (and hopefully longer that the A14) as this iPad gets older. Otherwise, I really like that the camera on the 10th gen is more appropriately located for use in video calls if I'm using it as a laptop. The other option is getting the iPad Air and using another keyboard that allows use in portrait mode... What folio keyboard allows this? Suggestions?

i feel again that this may be an unpopular opinion - as a user of an ancient 2017 10.5in ipad pro + 1st gen apple pencil, the 10th gen looks pretty good except for the colours. i use my ipad primarily to watch movies, youtube videos, emails, some web surfing i.e. *exactly* what you said ipad users do, & have realised that i don’t exactly need a pro for all this. that sald, i’ve only ever used my ipad pro so there’s no comparison for me. as for losing the pencil’s cap - it is magnetic & attaches itself to the side of the ipad. of course with disappearing bezels maybe it’s different now but that’s what i do. i’ve also done minor editing work on M365 apps / acrobat & everything’s been great. i was inspired by david hockney & had intended the ipad pro + pencil to do more digital art but it never went very far 😅 all this makes me wonder if the 10th gen is for those like me who jumped at getting the pro before realising that an « ordinary » version would do very well too. & we don’t even have to get a new pencil ! i have no incentive to get a new ipad but desperately need to replace the smart keyboard.

I am far from being an expert but my 2-cents is that you should get the best one on your list, which is the Air 5. 7-8 years is a long time in the world of technology and you want your device to last a long time. Also if you're going to be using the Apple Pencil extensively, it seems like the laminated display (in the Air) would be a better experience (as well as compatibility with the Pencil 2). I know you must have a lot of expenses right now, but it seems to me that a few hundred dollars extra for an essential tool is worth it.

Laminated screen does not mean a smaller gap. It means no gap at all. That results in a much reduced glare. The entry-level iPad has a non-laminated screen because it’s geared towards young people (kids, teenagers), and old people (older parents and grandparents) who just need a basic iPad for surfing, gaming, consuming media, and are those likely to be clumsy enough or reckless enough to drop their iPad. There will be much more glare than the non-laminated screen but the screen will be much much cheaper to repair since the glass is not fused to the screen. If you break an iPad with a laminated screen, you will be spending much more to repair it. As far as the iPad 10th gen iPad supporting the 1st gen Apple Pencil, I totally get it. You don’t buy an iPad 10th gen unless you are on a budget whether it’s for use in a Kiosk, or restaurant as a menu or point of sale device, or in a school or factory and the 1st gen Apple Pencil is cheaper. In families the younger members probably inherit the 1st Gen Apple Pencils when older members upgrade to devices using 2nd generation Apple Pencils. There are probably already a ton of 1st generation Apple Pencils out there and offering a new iPad that continues to support it really just makes sense especially to attract people on a budget. As far as the dongle/cable situation is concerned. I personally very much prefer to have that scenario than to have the Apple Pencil sticking directly out of my iPad when I try to continue to use it while I wait for the Apple Pencil to charge because it feels more awkward to me than holding it with a cable sticking out of it as I already do when I use my iPad while my iPad itself is charging.

@@eyhtwozed2606 It's perhaps for those with a higher budget than most but it is still a budget iPad compared to getting an iPad Air or iPad Pro. Also, this is cheaper in some cases for those with a need for an iPad AND a "laptop". The question is what your budget is. There are also plenty of second hand iPads out there for those with a lower budget. The non-laminated screen is attractive for those who are at a higher risk of screen breakage (families with toddlers and young kids, restaurants, factories, etc.) And the cost to replacing a non-laminated iPad screen is much much cheaper than the cost to replace a laminated screen.

The external monitor full screen support for the M1 / M2 iPads is a pretty big deal. I think it will get more coverage once it is out for public beta and release at iPad OS 16.2. It currently is on 16.2.1 developer beta only, but it’s pretty good. It’s currently a bit buggy but will be a nice addition when using the iPad with a desktop setup and external monitor or when connected to a projector for presentations. Getting rid of the black bars is pretty significant. That feature (and the M1) along with a better 12M camera, faster USB-C, and 5G support make the 5th gen Air a better deal than the 4th gen, though the 4th gen is still a good device.

@@MarkEllisReviews What about for things like light photo editing in Affinity Photo of Pixelmator Photo, or other apps like that- would there be any reason that the 4GB RAM wouldn't be good for quite some time, as long as this is really the most powerful thing that is being done on the device?
@MarkEllisReviews2 жыл бұрын
@@jm31828 every iPad in the current lineup would cope with that kind of light work, mate. RAM is a total non-event on the iPad for most people. For those to whom it matters, the iPad Pro exists.

@@MarkEllisReviews thanks for sharing, I’m so glad to hear it! I’ve really been struggling thinking I made a poor choice, only because of the a14 and the 4 gb ram- so I appreciate the reassurance that these specs are still quite good!

Will kingone stylus pencil be compatible with new ipad 10th gen? Kingone stylus does not work for ipad air 5

isnt the reason why the 10th gen ipad doesent support 2nd gen apple pencil is because the front camera takes the room of where you would normally charge the pencil

I’m sure you figured it out after the video, and it’s been pointed out by others, but the location of the camera precludes the MagSafe pencil connection, I would deal with the awkward camera placement to have use of the Pencil 2.

Do you guys think the ipad air 5 with 64gb will suffice if I use it for uni for 4 years? I have been contemplating between the air 5 64gb and 10th gen 256gb for a while, and I still dont know which one to get. I am just worried that the A14 chip in the 10th gen will stop having updates while im in uni, and I am worried about the storage of the air 5. Which one should I get? Never made it past the color option part of the video which of course was the first part. Seems absolutely meaningless for a device that clearly needs a protective cover. Remember time is the most valuable thing you have because you cannot get more of it. So I prefer not to waste it.

@@nichole2116 No I did not get the pencil. My used iPad came with an off brand pencil but I never use it. I did, however, get both the apple folio case and the Magic Keyboard as well. Apple pencile Gen 2 with magnetic charging is the only reason I went with iPad Air. Apple did that on purpose so that poeple will spend more money on iPad Air which is not too far (the 256GB version) from iPad Pro (128GB).
