iPad mini for urban sketching? Perfect digital sketchbook?

I've been using my mini 6 for urban sketching for about a year now, and It's been incredible for that and fits perfectly in a small sling for everyday carry. It's great for moving compositions around quickly and in low-light conditions too dark for paper. I actually switched back to watercolor/gouache urban sketching recently though since I find applying colors traditionally more satisfying.

I love my iPad mini 6. Still works perfectly. I’ve had it over a year now. So no need to upgrade to iPad minim7 as it’s the exact same as my one. Love drawing on it.

I have a 13" ipad air and it's great for at home but I think it's too big for sketching out in the city. The mini seems a bit small but I don't think it makes sense to buy a 11" ipad either. So planning on getting the mini. I've heard that you get used to zooming in/out and it's not that big of a problem.

I agree, the 11” iPad Pro is the sweet spot as a digital sketchbook. Not too big. Not too small. Just right. I have one, and it is my main content creation device. However, I also have an iPad mini for when I really wanna travel light. It compliments the larger iPad Pro nicely in that regard. What size storage did you get on your iPad mini 7? 🤔 128? 256? Or 512?

Malaysia ipad mini just available today and only with free shipping, but i want to pickup in store, guess have to wait a little. I am deep into samsung ecosystem, because samsung did not release relevant 8 inch tablet, and this could be my first apple product (mac mini is beautiful)

I have the perfect for on the go mini 6 (cell version) which I've been using for out & about. It goes everywhere with me & gets the most usage, my workhorse so to speak. I break it out for a quick sketch when paints aren't feasible & I'll sketch on that quick note dark screen if need be. Does what the big brothers do, with less flair of course. 😅 I also have the perfect all around screen size 11(s) WiFi versions but I prefer the mini for on the go. It's handy & light w/case, fits easily in bags. I don't carry backpacks. For drawing, a bigger screen is always better (love my 11 screen), but not always convenient. I'm looking hard at the mini 7. Thanks for the demo. Appreciated. 👍

The mini is just the size that many use in a traditional sketchbook. Perfect if you sit in shade or coffee shops, train, bus and/or are a woman who might find larger ipads cumbersome to hold in a sketching position for longer stretches of time.

I’m watching this video with my IPad Pro 4th Gen. While it has excellent display and fast processors it’s still too big for me especially while I’m on the go or travelling. Used smaller Huawei tablet for a while but it’s not as fast as any IPads out there. The iPad mini 7 is the obvious choice

Personally, I find the Mini 7 almost unusable outside if it is sunny. Very low display brightness.

1000 nits is the minimum I recommend for outdoor bright environment

Hi Teoh. I already have an iPadPro 11 (2020) with the Pencil. I recently got an iPad Mini and was wondering if there are alternatives for the Pencil just for basic use that you'll recommend. NOTE: I'm not an illustrator, it'll be just as a hobby, and I'm fine just using my iPadPro but maybe there are alternative styluses. Thank you

There are actually many Apple Pencil alternatives on Amazon that looks just like Apple Pencil. Important thing is to find out if the pen is compatible. Because now there are Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Pencil Pro. So alternatives for Apple Pencil 2 will not be interchangeable with alternatives for Apple Pencil Pro. Also many such alternatives will have magnetic attachment and charging, which may or may not work. All such pens will be good for writing, and there's tilt sensitivity and palm rejection. But there is no pressure sensitivity.

For drawing you can try Sketchbook, Concepts, Sketchable Plus, Clip Studio Paint (tablet mode). For note taking, Nebo or Microsoft Onenote.

With all the hoopla over the new iPad Mini, I ALMOST fell for the hype. 😓😓 Then I remembered the price of the iPad and that the Apple Pencil is NOT included adding even more cost 🙄🙄I also rewatched your previous iPad Mini review as well as your latest Mini review. I went with the Samsung S6 Lite 2024 at more than less than half the price of the Mini with the added feature of the S Pen included at no extra cost. I found the S6 Lite (2024) to be the "sweet spot" for me without paying the exorbitant Apple "tax." 😁😁

I prefer drawing/sketching with real (not digital) materials. A sketch done with real drawing materials, pens, pencils, paper, has character, it’s going to have a quality you can never get with dots programmed to look like a pencil line. Much nicer to flip through a real (paper) sketchbook and certainly easier to carry around than an iPad Pro. Guess I’m an outlier here. Way too much artificial stuff in the world.
