What I've found helps me is to watch the entire video from start to finish without trying to draw along in real-time. It can be overwhelming to try and "keep up." Then once I see how everything is layered and put together, I get my iPad out and draw it in segments with the video on a second watch. Also, if you repeat the same tutorial several times over a few weeks or months, you will develop a good sense for where the painting is going, and you'll be able to see in your mind's eye where you want to end up. And you can also introduce elements of your own and develop your understanding of the process without adhering strictly to what you're watching. Art is literally a lifelong study. :)
@ellieg74943 жыл бұрын
@@hemslonnigum That’s good advise thank you 😊 I agree - art is definitely a lifelong study, and I’m a late starter but really enjoying it.

Hello James!! How do you choose your colors?? I wanna see a video about it :DD Or do you alredy have one??
Hi James, beatiful painting. I got a question: why is it helpful to have layers? I mean you could also paint everything on one layer only
@ThisLadWayne4 жыл бұрын
Easier to manipulate. Copy a certain layer for reflection. Change something specific without ruining anything else etc

James, your tutorials are AWESOME, but... the pace has gotten so fast. I'm not sure if there's been feedback for the tutorials to be shorter in length, but I miss doing the "paintings" along with you in real time. Now I am pausing all the time, and it's not the meditative experience it used to be. The editing of the video, IMO, is too much. The relaxed pace is what separated your earlier tutorials from other less worthy youtube content (along with your great technique and tips, obviously). Thanks for the videos!
@JamesJulier-Artist4 жыл бұрын
That’s strange because I’ve made the conscious effort to slow sections down, older videos would have sections that I’d have sped up to 6x speed and lately I’ve restricted it to around 2.5x the long videos generally are the more complex paintings that take me longer to paint. This was a quick painting and naturally ended up a short video. I’ll have a think though and see if I can see what you see, thank you.
@JamesJulier-Artist4 жыл бұрын
Part of the reason is perhaps I give more information at the request of viewers I’m forever explaining the percentage of brush and opacity. It possibly adds to the information overload
@JamesJulier-Artist4 жыл бұрын
I think also I’ve started editing too fiercely on gaps whilst I’m talking...perhaps those gaps I’ll keep in as it give more time to absorb and keep up. Anyway I’ll examine the concern and amend what I can. Thanks
@christophersargent42604 жыл бұрын
If you don’t change anything, I’ll still watch and enjoy them immensely! The parts where I have to pause and rewind often are when you’re selecting a layer and then a color, very quickly, if that’s helpful at all. Thank you so much for the replies, though. These really spur my creativity. Thanks again! Now get going with that snow tiger! 😝
