@@ne0tic another absolutely false statement. Any phone running android from 2018 and newer is basicially on par or superior to the Iphone depending on camera setup as gcam is now running on borderline all android phones. Potrait is still awful on gcam and Iphone but there are few phones out there such as the Huawei P40/ Mate 40, Oppo find x2 and Oneplus 8 pro which do a much better job than iphone does simply due to much superior hardware, it's still imperfect even on monster camera phones like the huawei's. So making potrait mode comparisons is just silly because they are still so flawed.

It’s a feature to simulate a pro camera. So wouldn’t that be a better comparison to show fake vs really bokeh. If you really wanted to test the iPhone camera vs a real camera then the Sony should of been in full auto mode. Let the Sony camera make all the choices just like the native camera app on the iPhone does. We all know phone cameras will never be a “real” camera so whatever arguments you’re gonna make, stop! The whole point of videos like this is to showcase what a phone is capable of.

@@suleymanaliev312 I agree that if people are JUST looking for a good camera on a phone and don’t care what else the iPhone offers, then they can look somewhere else. But for someone like me, debating whether or not to upgrade because I like what the iPhone offers and because it would be great to have all that plus having the convenience of an iPhone camera that can simulate a picture close to a professional feel, would be winning for my personal needs and wants. With that being said, I don’t blame her for not showing the portrait mode because her fav food place was on her mind lol.

Ok for those asking about portrait mode. I get it. But portrait mode uses software to create a fake bokeh effect that would normally be created by a lens’ aperture. It basically finds the subject and blurs out the background. Comparing a7siii photos with iPhones portrait mode would only let us see how good the software does to get the effect. You can achieve “portrait mode” effect in photoshop or even apps. Just a thought. I think they were going for a camera to camera comparison, and this was 100% the best way to do it.

„You enjoying this video?“ No, not actually, because as many other people have noted, this comparison does not make sense, at all. iPhone means computational photography, so the interesting parts would have been how good the algorithm has become to select the shape of the person, and if the new lidar scanner adds to the experience. The way you put those two camera systems up against each other is just a waste of time as those „results“ were more than predictable.

Two tips from someone who’s pretty good at squeezing everything out of an iPhone camera. Shoot either portrait mode in the stock camera app, or use the depth mode with halide (a paid manual camera app that is perfect for getting great photos out of the phone). Second, use the app Focos to edit your depth or field. It uses depth data from the photo to get realistic bokeh. You can even adjust what’s in and out of focus in post which is kinda sorcery but it works well and can really save you. The thing you have to keep in mind when it comes to iPhone photography is third-party apps will always help you squeeze extra photo goodness out of that small sensor. Hope this helps anyone looking to get better shots. Good day

I was really hyped to see that video but what you did here unfortunately doesn’t really make any sense. Zooming in on the 26mm lens is just a digital crop from the 26mm. Not gaining anything basically. Furthermore you should have tried to use portrait mode with the improved lidar computational photography feature. Apart from that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have better quality but that’s nothing you are to blame for. In any case you should redo this comparison with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and then trying to use all the features the iPhone actually provides. Ideally with Apple Pro Raw (when it is out) and Lightroom (or whatever) edits to see what you can achieve when you really push it...

Two things. First off, you are shooting an f/1.4 lens against slower lenses in the iPhone. For example, the telephoto lens in the iPhone is an f/2 lens. So if you wanted to make it more fair, you would have to stop your lens down to f/2. However, the sensor in the Sony is way larger, so that comes into play as well, but at least match the apertures up. Second, as usual, there's an app for that. Focos is a great app that lets you add background blur and bokeh to your portraits. You can even go into a 3D depth mapping of your photo and change the focus point, depth of field etc...its awesome. You could have also used portrait mode on the iPhone. So not a very good test at all to be honest.

What a great comparison. Not gimmicky at all, just 1 to 1. It’s also good for understanding the type of shots that you can get away with on an iPhone.

this video only proves one thing - never do a camera comparison without knowing you tech...please check the other comments for clues on how to take pictures on a phone...another thing it proves is not everybody with a camera is a photographer.

Loved the video, unfortunately I don’t understand why you felt the need to make the second to last photo an edited one and then switch to an unedited iPhone. Then for your final comparison you used an unedited iPhone photo against an edited dslr photo. This happens every time and it’s really unfair for a comparison video. Again, loved your content but when it comes to this kind of video you really need to remain neutral and not show so much biases toward your dslr. I’ll take my penny now.

13mm, 26mm, etc are not focal lengths in this case. The physical quantity is "field of view" and can be expressed as the field of view of a full frame camera with a certain focal length without distortion. Focal length does not mean field of view. Focal length means focal length. So in this case "field of view of 13mm" is more correct than "focal length" of 13mm.

You used a 35mm f/1.4 lens to compare with a 26mm equivalent on the iPhone and then zoomed the iPhone in? That is not a fair comparison because you are effectively adding digital zoom into the iPhone's result, which will add artifacts. I understand if you don't have an equivalent lens on the Sony with a wide enough focal length, but it's not a fair comparison. I'm not defending Apple by any means here but people are watching this video to hopefully get accurate information to justify their purchases.

You pointed to the wrong lens placement. The tele lens on a 12 Pro is at the top now, not the wide. The iPhone 12 is different than previous iphones because of the increase in sensor size. They changed up the placement of the wide lens and the tele lens.

Didn’t use portrait mode or exposure lock, didn’t bother to bring the exposure down so you can avoid the overexposed scenes. Portrait mode and editing the photos would have made this way more fair. Other KZbinrs have shown in some cases you can’t tell the difference between the iPhone and full frame bodies.

FWIW- In the 55 years I've been a photographer and cinematographer, it has generally been accepted that the term "Bokeh" is the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. You have been using it in reference to any out of focus area, which I have always heard experienced professionals refer to as areas of Soft Focus. Creamy soft-focus, etc. Cheers

3:05 The sensor isn't responsible for the background blur. Put the same Sony lens on the iPhone sensor (without the iPhone lens) and the absolute background blur would be exactly the same, just the field of view would be much smaller and therefore the relative background blur would be even larger than on the Sony, if one would use the iPhone sensor with the same Sony lens.

I don't agree with the people making fun of you, but if you're going to compare the phone to a high-end camera, at least use the phone to its full extent. I don't know if you used ANY phone in the last 5 years but there's a portrait mode for the bokeh effect; You can reduce the exposure to get a better shot; etc. Obviously photos aren't going to look that good when you just whip out the phone and expect it to take the exact photo you want without any kind of prep.

This didn’t feel like a fair comparison, no portrait mode? By default the iPhone is built to try and maintain maximum depth of field. You should have maxed out aperture on the A7 if you wanted to compare similar style photos.

Cute video, but not that accurate. Honestly I wasn’t expecting it to be. Kinda silly to compare a camera with a lens the size of pinkie nail to a massive professional lens that costs more than the IPhone. Nothing like comparing close to $6k camera+lenses to a $1k camera+phone you can fit in your pocket. But , it was fun to watch.

For better comparative you would need to compare actual focal lengths.. perhaps using primes.. and apertures first and then possibly equivalent field of view...

You could have at least tried to match the focal lengths of the iphone with the lens of the A7siii? Like 13mm, 26mm and 52mm? Not 35, 50 is ok, and then 16mm? Come on. And let’s all pretend that portrait mode doesn’t exist.

I know Apple is pushing the whole idea of using their phone for professional use, but it ain’t happening for a while. Yes, these phones are perfect for Instagram clicks or Pinterest, but can’t replace the professional cameras (as of today). Imagine one showing up at wedding with iPhone 12 pro to take “professional” photos or commercial shoot for a clothing line/car where poster need to go on billboard. However, I do agree that these phones give us a wide variety of options with a few taps on the screen Vs picking up camera, batteries, and lens.

Bokeh is the quality of out of focus (OoF) lights produced by either distance to subject/background, aperture and/or sensor size. Term also lately used for referring to OoF background. Portrait Mode in phones renders a programmed OoF background. It is just a software result (like mini-photoshopping). In that sense, if Portrait Mode is to be used in iPhone, then an in-camera (A7s) tool for creating "bokeh" would have to be used. Or maybe just post process it, photoshop it, etc. Apple's algorithms are nice but it's just that, software. Otherwise, most phone cameras can't just make bokeh with those distances/sensor sizes/apertures. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻

I'm with the comment re portrait mode. If you want to do a comparison, then you need to use the computational features (fusion, portrait mode, low light mode etc) that Apple provides. They are part of the whole point of using an iphone camera. Show how/if the Sony can do a better job in all these cases. In other words shoot in conditions that favour the Sony/larger sensor (But use the features apple provide to mimic this) - but then also shoot in conditions that the computational photography of the iphone also excels in. That way your viewers get a true view as to how well an Iphone holds up (or doesn't) against a dedicated camera.

That's a not fair comparison, you should had use portrait mode on the iPhone to see how it will really can bring up and also edit them files as you did with the sony... either ways, not of them can compare to any modern aps-c sensor or any full frame sensor dedicated for photography.
